What is the largest size of uke that is allowed to be taken onto an aircraft as hand luggage in a soft case?

Does it substantially vary with different operators or in different countries? Please bear in mind that UU viewers are worldwide.

In the US (and I've had the same response on US carriers in Canada and Mexico) the federal limit what you can fit in an overhead bin (https://www.transportation.gov/sites/dot.gov/files/docs/DOT_Musical_Instruments_FAQ_2_0.pdf ), and I've seen larger guitars stowed in the first class closet.

Elsewhere it may count as normal carry on and be subject to normal carry on limits, so check with your carrier.

I take a Backpacker uke in my checked, hard-sided suitcase.

Barry Maz reported that he disassembles a couple of Enya laminates and puts them in his luggage. GotAUkulele.com.

If worse comes to worst, call the airline and ask if they have a special instrument handling option and if not what is the best way to bring them on the flight.
