Long story short....

Met a guy on line, a local teacher, who runs a 5th grade uke club in a local school. I sugested he contact Julia Nunes about visiting their club, as she's a local girl. Months have passed, and she's agreed to do it! The visit is tomorrow, for an hour, and the teacher has invited me to attend.

I'm really looking forward to it, as I'm a big fan of Julia's, and she is a big part of the reason I took up the ukulele. I can't believe that this just happened to fall on my day off this week! Sweet! I never would have been able to go, otherwise....

For anyone interested, the club is the Cal-Mum (Caledonia / Mumford) Ukulele club. They have a web site, but I don't have the link handy. :o

The camera is packed, the battery is freshly charged, and I'm on it! I wish I had video capability, but I don't.

Do you think it would be presumptuous of me to bring a uke? I know the kids will have theirs, and I'm sure Julia will be playing with/for them. I'm just an invited visitor....would that be out of place for me to bring a uke?

Man, I wish I had thought to get a UU t-shirt in time to wear tomorrow....:o

Bring your uke. You will regret it if you don't.

And bring a sharpie- you will also regret it if you don't ask Julia to sign your chest.

Well, obviously Ukisociety has met Julia, and I've seen video of Julia and Seeso doing "I've Got You, Babe"....and it looks like I'm next!

I'm taking everyone's advice and bringing my uke. I'm not sure if I'd want it autographed....we'll see. Good idea, though, to get a picture of Julia playing it (if possible). The meeting is for the kids, after all, and I don't want to impose.

Anyone else here in UU-land met Julia Nunes?

I'll report back later this afternoon and let everyone know how it went!

Looks as if I may have actually done this right!

Things went great this afternoon. :D Julia is as sweet and unassuming as she seems to be in her videos. She is easily approachable, and was wonderful with the kids. There was a group of about 40 (yes, 40) eleven-year-olds from the 5th grade uke club....and they were psyched! Have you ever been in a room with 40 excited eleven-year-olds?

Julia seemed a bit taken-aback at first, and didn't really know what was expected of her. This was her first time appearing at an elementary school. It wasn't long before she got in the swing of things, and before long she was belting out songs, answering questions and listening to the kids play songs of their own.

The hour passed quickly, ending with Julia signing autographs....on ukuleles, shirts, books, arms, shoulders, casts, and even a couple of foreheads! I chose not to have my uke signed, as it would have had to have been on the spruce top in order to show up.

The local TV news station was there to film a feature of the event, which will run periodically all day next Sunday, probably edited down to a few minutes in length. He said it would remain available on their website for three years! The reporter did a fairly lengthy interview with Julia after the kids had gone, and I stayed to watch.

All in all it was a great time....all I had hoped it would be. Julia is a class act and a great ambassador of ukulele!

Julia doing a song with some of the kids.

I still don't know how to do multiple pictures in one post, but at least I've gotten this far! (I'm usually techno-stupid) :D

One of the kids wanted Julia to play a song on his Mahalo soprano. Julia tried like a trouper, but the thing just sounded awful, no matter how she tried to tune it. She had to give it up after a few minutes and go back to her own uke.

I took more pictures, but these are the only ones that came out well. For whatever reason, the rest came out dark.

But, I had a great time, and I told Julia about UU (stopped just short of suggesting that she join). I'll remember the afternoon fondly.

Now, let's see, Jake is going to be in town on June 16th.....

She's something, all right. Why, if I were only 35 years younger, single, and twice as rich but only half as ugly....I might stand a chance! :D

You're right....everyone had a great time. It was worth the wait. Forgot to mention that the uke club teacher, Mr. Leonard, is going to post a bunch of video on the uke club's website....it may even be up already. I'm going to dash off to find a link to post!

Seeso....

I asked Julia and her mother the same question today, and they said that they are related. Her father's side of the family is Portuguese, by the way. I believe they said it was her father's great-grandfather who moved from Portugal to Hawaii....

Keep in mind that I may have misunderstood, but....

Here's a link to a rough edit of a video of the TV interview Julia gave on Tuesday. This was shot by Mr. Leonard on a hand-held video camera. Mr. Leonard has promised another link to follow soon to a video of her actual performance with/for the kids.
