I dont know if flame box elder is any good for making instruments, but damn is that pretty! I'm sure some of the talented luthiers here could do amazing things with this.

I've seen Native American flutes made from it.

I'd like to see what a quarter sawn plank looks like. I think it should spectacular as well.

I did some digging. Box elder is actually the softest of the maples. Probably too soft for the thin slices needed in a stringed instrument. Would probably work as a veneer on laminated backs and sides, though.
