A friend of mind is on vacation in France this week. Knowing my "interest" (her way of saying insane obsession, lol) with ukes, she sent me a photo of this odd cigar box uke she saw in a store front. It makes me wonder about its story, where it came from, and most importantly, how would it sound?116747

That ukulele appears to be one of these:
https://www.bohemianguitars.com/products/bohemian-motor-oil-electric-soprano-ukulele

There's plenty of information about and recordings of this line available on the internet. It seems to be an entry-level, novelty steel-string electric 'ukulele. Seems inferior to other steel-string ukulele offerings.

If you want a more conventional oil can 'ukulele, I'd like to point you in the direction of David de l'Huile. He'd probably even build you an oil can amp if you ask nicely: https://ukubidon.weebly.com/

Edit: a bit of web searching pulled up another gallery of "oil can" ukes I'd never seen before made using everything from cookie tins to auxiliary liquor packaging: http://www.laguitare.com/hugo/index.html

If you have interest in this style, pop in to this site:

I make mine from cookie tins and they aren't amped because I'm just playing them at home. I'm waiting for a friend to finish up a can of Japanese sesame oil because I love the tin.

Based on the headstock, the uke in the window appears to be a Bohemian Guitars oilcan ukulele. Barry Maz reviewed one not too long ago (https://www.gotaukulele.com/2019/02/bohemian-guitars-electric-soprano.html). He wasn't terribly impressed.

Run away,,,,,far away....unless you willing to put some money into it.....reviews are not good.......a friend got one via their start up........had to take it to a shop to make it playable....kind of......so money spent....and then more money spent.....not real happy overall....he says it's more of a novelty....doesn't get played much....and some time later Bazman reviews one......looks as if quality control has not been part of the companies long term goal...

But then again....if they are your "thing" you may like it....

I have a Ukubidon (very secondhand and a bit rusty), but it plays nicely. The Bohemian hasn't had good reviews ... I would steer clear!

i got a bohemian, i had to send it back, the bridge plate seemed to be in the wrong place, you simply could not adjust things to where they needed to go for decent intonation, and i don't mean the sound was off by a little bit, it was off by a mile. however i've seen demo vids of the instrument on youtube and they sounded really good. it might be worth, if you fancy the uke, getting your pal to get the people who run the shop to demo the uke - it should be easy to hear if if sounds good or sounds atrocious

the one in this demo vid sounds like the bridge is in the right place!

And it wasn't good.

I figured I'd let people read it. My summary would not have been as colorful!
