I've wanted to play bass for a long time, when the Uke Bug bit me I thought the U-Bass would be a great way to learn. So I bought a nice Kala U-Bass but didn't put in the time to learn. So I did what is logical, bought a solid Acacia U-Bass, surely that would help because Koa makes everything sound better! Now I find I'd rather use the space on my shelf for 4 stringed instruments I know how to play. I'm still not a U-Bass expert but here they are, both are fretted models (I can't imagine learning on a fretless model).
- Kala UBASS-ACACIA-FS - while Acacia isn't exactly Koa, it's a close cousin, and this one has the beautiful grains we Koa lovers admire (which is why I chose it). Playing U-Bass acoustically isn't going to keep the neighbors up, but as you would expect, having a solid Acacia body does make a difference in the sound. This U-bass has a passive pickup, great plugged in sound and no batteries to replace. It also features Rosewood binding, fretboard and bridge and a beautiful abalone Road Toad logo. Comes with Uke Crazy foamshell case. $375 plus shipping
- Kala UBASS-EBY-FS - has the beauty of Ebony in an upscale laminate body. It's a looker for sure especially with the maple binding and light bridge against the dark Ebony. And it features Shadow NFX electronics with a built in tuner (which is important since many tuners have a hard time "hearing" low bass notes). Comes in U-Bass logoed gig bag. $350 plus shipping.
