No Sales Tax

As you know, companies are now required to charge sales tax on online purchases. I just placed orders with C. B. Gitty and Stewart-MacDonald, and neither charged tax. I don't know how long this will continue, but if you're thinking about buying from them, sooner would be better than later.

It's a state-by-state decision as to whether to require online retailers to charge sales tax. Of the states that have sales taxes, I'd guess most do require it by now. If you live in one of the five states with no sales tax, you're in luck (congrats, ukers in Oregon, Montana, Delaware, New Hampshire and Alaska).

I ordered from Stewart-MacDonald last week and they charged sales tax... I just bought a camera from Adorama and no sales tax (but Amazon charges tax on the same item).

I think there is a threshold in sales to that state that must be met before the requirement kicks in. I think it was 100k, but I could be mistaken.

It depends on the state, and from my random-guy-on-the-internet-who-definitely-isn't-a-lawyer-or-tax-specialist read StewMac probably doesn't need to collect NY sales tax.

SD's limits upheld in WayFair were 100k or 200 transactions, so most states are following that at least somewhat. WA is 100k and StewMac does collect WA Sales Tax.

From a quick search, NY is 300k and 100 transactions to the state for marketplace providers (e.g. Ebay & Reverb) but still requires more of a nexus in-state for out-of-state vendors than StewMac may have. This is the closest relevant point for StewMac (the others are more obviously not applicable):
