I went to this seminar on making instruments out of vegetables. It was facilitated by a guy who plays in the Vienna Vegetable orchestra. Their deal is that every performance starts with a trip to the produce market where they select vegetables from which to make their instruments. These guys are mostly classically trained musicians. After the show they eat their instruments. This is really cool, you gotta check it out. I wonder if you could make a vegetable ukulele?

By the way the seminar was a lot of fun and I made a trumpet out of a gourd and a carrot. My brother made a cucumber sax.

That sounds like a lot of fun. I especially like the one comment, "I need to take a Leek."

That's really interesting. Plus they kick some serious musical butt.

I've seen people make reeds/whole double-reed instruments out of some strange things (okay, mostly straws and paper and funny woods)... you could make rhubarb-oboes!

I'd totally love to see a REAL pineapple or watermelon uke. :)

I show the video from their website to my elementary music classes and they absolutely love it! Where did you go to this workshop?

At the Baltimore arts center or Baltimore center for the arts or somethiing like that... it was in Baltimore, and the guy that facilitated was from someplace in california.

You should totally do a lesson with your students where you give them veggies and help them make instruments. They would love it, and you can tie in all sorts of interesting science and math...
