I think it would be awesome if we had an official Ukulele Underground playlist on iTunes - maybe 15 songs that we collectively decided were essential listening for purveyors of uke music. Or there could be multiple playlists - trad Hawaiian, uke jazz, 21st Century uke, etc. Has anyone else considered this?

I think this would be a great idea. I personally don't listen to any uke music at all, other than my own, is that weird? I'd like to know what people's opinions on the "essentials" were.

There hasn't been an official UU playlist. Woodshed over at UkeHunt has an essential list, but it's not comprehensive.

I think it's a great idea.

And no one started a list yet?

Let's make sure we have all the categories set before we start populating them.

What should the categories be?

  1. Traditional Hawaiian

  2. Contemporary Hawaiian

  3. Uke Jazz

  4. Jawaiian

  5. Pop Ukulele

  6. Indie Ukulele

  7. Contemporary Instrumental Ukulele

Can anyone think of anything else?

I am also quite interested in this, but moreso in the non-traditional ukulele music. Particularly I am interested in jazz and classical. I am also interested in fingerstyle instrumental more than vocal songlists. I am arranging an playing some things this way, but except for the obvious folk like Ritz, Ohta, etc. I plead ignorance of many performers. I did enjoy Uke Radio when it was available.

Would "Blues Uke" fall under the category of "Uke Jazz", or would it warrant it's own?

Maybe we should each pick our top two or three songs from each category seeso listed (nothing too obscure, if it's on iTunes), and then vote on the ones that appear most frequently in the thread.
