Wow. 1000 posts in just over six months. I love this community - some of the nicest, funniest, most genuine people I've never met! I really have to make it to the Ukulele World Congress next year and meet some of you in person!

Because of the fun I've had here and the great camaraderie, I am announcing my number 1000 contest:

1) Because I'm too lousy of an ukulele player to post my own YouTube performance, this is a NON-performing contest!

2) My family has listened to all the different things I've shared from UU over the last several months; accordingly, they have helped design the contest.

3) My wife, kids, and I will be the sole judges; we will winnow all the entries (hopefully a lot of them) down to five finalists. My son and daughter will be responsible for picking the grand prize winner.

4) And...enter as often as you like - the more the merrier!

5) The prize won't be much besides the pride of winning and the knowledge that a 13-year-old and a 3-1/2-year-old thought you were the best. Oh, yeah, you'll also received a lovely, framed, acknowledgment of your superiority (picture to follow), signed by the entire Hughes family.

So...all that said, here's the challenge:

Because my username is bbycrts, which is short for baby carrots - and because this is an ukulele site - this is a vegetable-and-ukes poetry challenge!

Create a poem of any type that somehow blends the idea of ukuleles and vegetables into a single work of literary art. We are a family that values humor, just so you know...

The deadline for this contest is JULY 31, 2009, a date I just whipped out of my head at random. Get writing!

Lettuce and cabbage and celery? No!
Why do I pick up my ukulele so?
It is for those delicious baby carrots I see,
As I strum to my baby on my ukulele

Entry No. 2

I think that I shall never see
an ukulele shaped like broccoli.

Yet with Ebay, money and UAS
There's still a chance, I'd have to guess...

Entry No. 3

"Why I can't own just one"

I can't subscribe to monogamy
when there's Koa, Spruce, Maple and Mahogany.
(eat your peas)

.

There once was a man from nantucket
When he played the uke, he would pluck it
He said with a grin
As he looked down his chin
"Is them baby carrots in that bucket?"
:biglaugh:

Roses are red,
Peas make me puke,
I took a bite like you said,
Now may I go play my uke?

yuck.jpg

Carrots, spinach, cabbage and things
neck, fretboard, body and strings
beans, brussels, potatoes and peas
veggies are lame but ukuleles... d'oh

I'm pretty sure, that I did see
a spot on that carrot, wink at me.

I've pushed with my fork, and I've pried with my spoon
these dumb veggies just won't be gone soon.

So to the dog 'neath the table, this muck it will go,
and dear ole mom will never know.

Uh-oh! What's that you say?
No dessert straight to bed, and my uke I can't play?

Mom I was done! And the dog looks so thin!
But alas, tis my room, I end up in.

Tomorrow I'll play the uke I love most,
But tonight on UU, this poem I'll post.

Some great entries so far! I KNOW there is more poetry out there...no promises, but I may add another prize, depending on how crafty I get! How's that for a teaser?

A poem about love and eating your five a day

he plucked his uke gently in the pale moonlight
standing under need her windowsill, dreaming...
...dreaming of lips as red as cherry tomatoes
of cheeks as rosy as spaghetti bolognese
of hair that smells of ginger snaps
of her heaving, sweaty...cabbages are distinguished by a short stem upon which is crowded a mass of leaves which form a characteristic compact, globular cluster.

as he's standing there singing his serenade
about two tragic star crossed lovers
he felt that with his love by his side
he could conquer worlds and seven seas
and some alien race if they ever appeared
he loved her more than a greengrocer loves his veg
he would touch her more gently than waves slowly kissing the beach

"listen you, it was a one time thing
now shut the hell up, can't you see I'm trying to sleep"

he loved her more than a ukeplayer loves his tropical wood
his ukeplayer wood now was about as hard as butter

Ukuleles are usually brown,
and carrots are usually orange...

crap.

Koa incidences

Beginning to see
All around
Boy meets girl
You meet me

Could I move
Around my fretboard
Realizing melody
Realizing chords
Open strings
Tuned GCEA
Strumming happily together

If I may, I'd like to write two entries in one post!
Both are haikus :)

Entry #1:
"Eat your greens," Mom says
"No," I say! I'd rather play
My ukulele.

Entry #2
beans, brocolli, ick!
beets, borecole, brussels sprouts, ick!
B, B flat, music!

Entry #2 - Song Version!

When I see a veggie I just want to share it,
Rutabagas, or peas, or tiny baby carrots,
Sharing is good, it makes me feel ten feet tall,
Besides, if I'm lucky, they'll eat it all.

At lunchtime there's three things I usually do
almost every day without fail, it's quite true.

I eat a nice sandwich with cucumbers in it,
check the forums for new posts and decide how to spin it,

And, if I'm lucky, strum a song or two,
my ukulele singing its heart out for you.

For a snack, I munch baby carrots most orange
For dessert, I say things that will make a post whore cringe!

Contest is closed...the results are being tallied by the preliminary judges (the parents) so the finalists can be presented to the final judges (the kids). Good luck to all who entered - I already know who I want to win...let's hope the kids know their stuff (I'll try my hardest not to use parental pressure to apply undue influence...).

Now how can you not give a great deal of extra consideration to any entry that exploits the gratuitous use of the word "Nantucket"?
