I've been playing for about a year.
Eight days ago, I finally replaced my $10 dollar non branded soprano uke with a real uke - a pono concert.
Now, having read through a lot of the threads here in deciding what to get and whatnot, I think I've contracted a mild case of UAS.
Now, I love my new uke. It's EONS better than what I've been playing with, and I can't stop strumming it whenever I have a free moment. I love how it sounds and how it looks. Basically I'm completely in love with it and satisfied with it. But, perhaps because I've been reading in the forums too much, I've been obsessing over maybe acquiring a second uke - a soprano Flea (mostly because of everyone's raves over it, that it's a durable one that's more suited for traveling, and that I'd like to have the option of a soprano or a concert to play) - to compliment my concert Pono.
Some specific questions on the Flea:
- Should I wait a bit before getting a second uke since I'm still much of a beginner in uke playing, and especialy since I've only gotten a new one days ago? Am I being completely nuts to want a second uke so soon after getting one?
- I'm not big on decorative stuff on ukes, and I'm lusting after the plain solid black "lava" soprano Flea with no upgrades (I'd like to keep the original fretboard, because it seems more travel friendly). Would this be a good choice? Are all Fleas (other than the ones that are specifically 'solid koa', etc) the same physically in terms of materials, other than the color?
- If I do get it, should I upgrade the strings to Aquilas immediately? I understand this seems to be the brand that most people like on their Fleas.
- Now, I live in HK. I don't think there's are Fleas available here at any store. I've been checking out fleamarketmusic, but shipping there would be around 43, which would make it even more expensive than my solid ohai pono concert (which was available here, so no shipping) - that doesn't seem right! (I've checked out ebay too, of course, but the shipping is about the same as well.) Anyone know of any stores in Asia that sells Fleas?
- My impression having read some of the threads here is that people seldom sell their Fleas. Is that true? Is buying a second hand Flea a rare occasion? And if such an occasion arises, what's the general cost of a second hand Flea?
I'd appreciate any thoughts on this, and thanks!
