Your best bet is MGM... Im sure he will help you pick the best uke for your money...

If I had 160 right now and need a case also, I would probably go with

http://cgi.ebay.com/KALA-KA-SC-solid-sprucetop-Concert-Ukulele-w-case-SETUP_W0QQitemZ270411111253QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_D efaultDomain_0?hash=item3ef5c21b55&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262&_trkparms=|301%3A1|293%3A4|294%3A30

This was my first uke bought last September and I still play it everyday

Good luck

I'd recommend anything Ohana in your price range. The sound is fabulous, esp for an import. I have the sopranino and adore it.

There are several ukes in that price range. But it begs the question, what did you pay for your first uke? That is not much of an upgrade. You would do better to spend a little more and get a Kala or Koa Pili Koko. Just my 2 cents.

Friction tuners can be annoying at first, but once you get a feel for them and learn how to maintain them, you might grow to like this style of tuner.

I know I did. :)

Any solid top Ohana or Kala ukulele in your price range will be a big step up from a $40 ukulele. :)

If you don't like friction tuners (I don't either) then you're probably best served by looking into Kalas...

Here's what I found on MGM's page - it's a concert Kala solid spruce top with case...looks real nice, and you couldn't buy from a better person - and the price is in your range!

(This one expires in a couple hours but he has a bunch of them...)

That's very pretty, looks a lot like my acoustic bass. Though I'm torn between getting a soprano, which a love, or trying concert.

Also that Kiwi uke he has keeps grabbing my attention... decisions, decisions.

Flea. Maybe. It's $10 over your limit. But awesome. And indestructible.

...free shipping...
Only inside the USA. And no discounted rate to anywhere else. Not much of a sale for those of us outside the USA!

Mike's a good guy, and has great products - I've bought several ukes from him. But if you're not in the USA, and have to pay shipping from Hawaii, you might find a better deal locally.

And it's an okay uke. Nice to look at, but the sound is only average to my ears.

mainland mainland mainland.
it'll probably be 190 w/ shipping and w/out a case.
but those few extra dollars will go a long way with a mainland

The Ohana's are quite nice. MGM almost always sends with case and sets them up nicely. My husbands Ohana is truly a joy to play

Cigar Box ukuleles are cool, one of my friend's dad has one. Thing is the shape makes them a little *cough* awkward for women to play.

Well there are different sizes of boxes that could accomodate the *cough* awkwardnes for women. I know Russ is making 2 tenors right now. The second one that might be more accomodating is the slimmer of the boxes represented in the pictures of the 2 in my post (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14712). His prices are reasonable, and should be in your price range. You might want to contact him if you are interested.

Maybe, I don't know about the cigar box thing, though.

Go for any solid top import near the top of your range that you like the look of -you'll soon fall in love with it over your $40 uke. Or - buy nearly new on eBay or similar marketplace and get more bang for your buck.

Your main problem seems to be in first deciding if you want a soprano or a concert, to be honest, as there are oodles of Kala and Ohana ukes out there just waiting to be owned by you.

I bought one today BY ACCIDENT. That's how easy it is.

if it was me, i would go for the koalana solid saple concert for only $160 http://cgi.ebay.com/KoAlana-by-Koaloha-Solid-SAPELE-Concert-Ukulele-w-case_W0QQitemZ370295768024QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_De faultDomain_0?hash=item56375903d8

i reckon they sound the best out of all in that price range

I'd buy a good used uke. Personally I think you'll get more for your money. Lots of used beginner ukes out there as people move up. In addition, I guarantee that you'll eventually upgrade too. If you decide to sell this one you'll probably get $ for $ back when you sell it.
