It's an acceptable in the English language:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ukulele

Main Entry:uku·le·le
Variant(s):also uke·le·le \ˌyü-kə-ˈlā-lē, ˌü-\
Function:noun
Etymology:Hawaiian ʽukulele, from ʽuku flea + lele jumping
Date:1896
: a small guitar of Portuguese origin popularized in Hawaii in the 1880s and strung typically with four strings

Newspapers can be slow to catch on. Many primary schools in my area have been teaching the uke for some years, largely due to the influence of Tim Lewis (Nipper). here an article from 2006 from the The Guardian

I wish they'd taught me that in school, I bloody hated the recorder.

Haha we have keyboards at our school, two drum kits and a electric guitar and a classical guitar with a string missing, and then just all of the primary percussion instruments such as xylophones and recorders and snare drums and some other stuff.

I just take my ohana in anyway and some friends pick up some other instruments and we just jam for a hour lol, the rest of our class just play keyboard :/
