Thanks Craig I think I got it but it was a little subtle. The reason it sounds good when you end on the Gmaj7 is because when you use the Abmaj scale you are outlining a bV chord which resolves to I or the Gmaj7. Right? :anyone:

I'm ending on a CMaj7, not a G. It's a bVIMaj7 (the Ab, that is).

So the very last chord can be either a GMaj7 or Em9....or some type of CMaj7 chord (no root) with a b5 = CMaj7b5. It's the F# or Gb (aka b5) that gives it an eerie quality.
