so, I'm thinking about getting a ukulele tattoo, with soft grey clouds (Japanese style) and cherry blossoms. Here's a sketch…

What do you think?

I like the concept, but something about the sound hole doesn't look right in the sketch...Looks like the soundboard is 3 inches think...or is that a label inside...?

tuscadero

The arch in the soundhole is the shadow in the photo we used as reference. Right now it's about 7 inches high, 3.5" wide. I expect the artist will want to enlarge it a little bit, they always do ;)

You could have just said it was some graphic designer stuff that I wouldn't understand..I would have been fine with that...:D

If the arch is not in the final product, I say go for it then!

That' a good size. The larger it is, the better the small details, like the strings, will be.

Are you sure you want it on your back? One of my favorites is on my back and I am bummed that I have to get a mirror to see it.

seeso

I like it. Did you draw it?

tuscadero
07-13-2009, 04:44 PM
Seeso: Yup, I drew it. I'm the worst customer for a tattoo artist, I come in with a pretty developed drawing, they don't get to play too much.

Deech: I hear you about the back, however, the only way I would get a tattoo on my arm is if I got a 1/2 sleeve and I'm not ready for that kind of commitment.

I love the design (though I'd suggest making the uke a little more prominent) - but why put it in a place where you can't see and enjoy it?

That's beautiful!

But I have to say that I agree with Deach about the back thing. I only have one tattoo, and it's on my foot, because I wanted to decorate myself for me, rather than for others.

Craig: That's lovely, did you get it inked? Got a photo?

The one flaw in that idea is that when a lady gets pregnant (if and when), the stretching really screws up the tattoo.

I already have a pretty monumentous tattoo on one leg and I'm not feeling matching socks...you can see it here. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/g_photo/135691624/)

I'm meeting with a tattoo artist this evening, I'm sure he'll have some input, changes, too. It should be interesting. I've got $20 that says it's his first ukulele tattoo ;)

Ahh, your design is gorgeous! I really love the idea, though I think I'd second the suggestion to make the uke a little more prominent. I can't wait to see what your artist sketches out for you, I do hope you'll give us photos of the finished product. I think it'll be a tattoo that will bring a smile to people who see it.

elizenazelie, I love your work. Bold linework and bright colours... beautiful style!

Now you know why I don't have a tattoo of a ukulele.

My favorite tattoo is on my back, and I'm ok with that. I can't look at it, but I know it's there and that's all that matters to me.

Anyway it's best if I can't look at it. All I see on the ones I can look at are all the spots I need touched up.

Maybe, but I will be an awesome ukulele playing, tattooed grandmother with some sweet stories about gay bars and rock concerts that ended with 50 cops showing up and me trying to explain why I had a pocket full of melted dum dums and parts of a broken vodka bottle in my shoulder.

Got my first tattoo when I was 40. Getting my second this year when I'll be 50. I'm a grandfather 4 times over.

My wife got her first tat when she was 47. Grannies with tattoos? Why the heck not, if they want 'em?

I'm curious to know if Tuscadero ever got the uke tattoo. I thought it was a very nice design. :)

Hi Elize,
Is the Painted Bird over by Kappy's? Does Ken Dean still work there? He did my ankle when he was over at Pino Bros. I really should get him to touch it up :)
I'm looking at your site, you've done beautiful work. I haven't pulled the trigger on this tattoo yet. I had another tattoo artist work on some sketches and I just wasn't loving them, so I put it on the back burner. Sounds like we should schedule a consultation though, I'd love to see what you would do with the original idea.

Tatoos turn black after awhile and you're going to be a grandma someday. Forget it, you won't be young forever.
What a sorrowful sentiment that is.

Having an IRA is all the acknowledgment I care to do about the future and being old. I'm already middle aged and have lived life enough to know that regrets about what you have done are not as painful as regrets about what you have not done.
When I am wrinkled and the designs of my ink are as vague as the memories that surround them, the tale is still there: a life has been lived.
All we've really got is now.

Okay, I do recognize one other thing I do about the future and being old: preventative skincare and sun protection.

The best thing I've done in a long time. I will never regret it and wear it proudly. And it's a wonderful reminder of a most memorable trip with a very dear friend.

No they don't. Depends on the inks used and their initial colour. I have a nice red-yellow-brown quetzalcoatlus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quetzalcoatlus) on my shoulder that's more than 15 years old and still colourful, plus a blue-green mosasaur (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosasaur) from around that period that's still recognizablely greenish.

And you're as young as you feel you are.

I've become a hypocrite! I may have posted here earlier about being old and regretting a tattoo. Guess what? I got a tattoo. It'll still look like h*ll when I get to be eighty but I decided not to regret NOT getting one. Salukulady and I got tattoos in Chicago. It was a riot.

Aloha Tuscadero,
It's an awesome concept, Maybe kinda cluttered and make the
Ukulele more prominent, smaller or less flowers otherwise
soo cool!!!Don't forget to post the finished tattoo and share it
with us.......MM Stan..
BTW- I like to draw too, you're pretty good and I see you've
got that tattoo style cherry blossoms down...not to
mention you cool uke...I was trying to conceptualize(is that a word)
it in color. I've had my tattoo for about 35 years and the
bright colors are still there. You always could touch ups
if they fade. Only thing my outlines have thickened over
the years, I guess from the skin streching. You go girl!!!!
