I had a 1/16" gap between my nut and fretboard on my Lanikai. I fixed it but was wondering if this was common or just because it was a beginners uke. Probably should have asked this BEFORE I fixed it.

That gap suggests that the nut was in the wrong place, but the fret board COULD have been 1/16" short to the first fret. Try what Cornfedgroove suggested. That will tell you precisely where the nut should be. A quick and less precise method would be simply to measure the distance from the first to the second fret, to the nearest half millimeter. It should be just a little less than the distance from the nut to the first fret. In these terms, 1/16" is a lot. It will make a very noticeable difference.

whew, I checked the stewmac chart and I did good. I'm lucky i didn't screw it up. thanks for the site.
I hadn't thought about the board being to short, I got luck this time.

Good result Paul. Your uke should now have decent intonation.

Well done.
