We have each just gone from a soprano uke to a tenor uke and are having a discussion about tuning the uke on an Ashton tuner. Should we stick to Chromatic 440hz or something lower? My husband feels we should go to 410hz. I just don't know!

Why would your husband think so? Because it is a tenor? This is partly a rhetorical question and partly for real, because you do not provide any further info.

Just stick to what is normal around the people you play with (probably A=440), because what matters most is that your sound will match other instruments. As for tuning, the notes are the same for a soprano and a tenor so all stays the same.

Thanks for that. He thought it tuned too high on 440 but I think we'll stick to it. Must say we are enjoying the tone of the tenor ukes - love them!

Hi, yeah 440hz is standard. Is your tenor in High G or Low G? I have a tenor too and love tone. Enjoy your instrument.

P.S. Welcome to the forum!

If you want to be able to play along with anyone else or with any recorded music, stick to A=440 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A440)Hz. It's almost a universal standard, although a few orchestras still use a slightly different pitch today (442 and 445, plus some baroque ensembles use others 415 and 460).

410 is WAY too low by almost a semtione for ukulele play. You would be out of tune with everyone around you.

A was set at 435Hz until 1936, when it was moved up to 440, but it has moved around a lot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitch_(music)#History_of_pitch_standards_in_Wester n_music)over the last 200 years, even reaching as high as 480HZ! But today, 440 is pretty much what everyone uses.
