Here's a strange question for my first post.
Just ordered a new Uke. One with 'Friction' tuners.
So now I'm already considering doing an upgrade.
Has anybody EVER tried these planetary geared banjo tuners on a Uke?
They are a straight shaft replacement for friction tuners on a banjo.
Of course, these things CO$T more than the Uke they would go on...:biglaugh:

I've used them on banjo for years, they are great. The gear ratio is 4:1 rather than 1:1.

They might be a little heavy for a small uke. I could see them on a tenor. They stick out an extra 1/4" from the back, from the front they are the same.

I'm ok with open gear tuners sticking out from the sides, otherwise I'd probably go for planetaries on a uke.

I'm in the same boat. Bought a nice uke with friction tuners....and I hate them. I'm also considering an upgrade to planetary tuners.

The banjo units I've seen are a 4:1 ratio. Certainly that's better than 1:1, but aren't geared ukulele tuners usually more like 14:1?

This is what is keeping me from pulling the trigger on banjo tuners....

Actually I don't have anything against friction tuners.
Use them all the time on my fiddle.
I just suffer from that fever induced complication of UAS.
The itch to change or modify things probably better left alone.
You know, kind of a "well even if I can't play it I can at least play with it".

Friction Pegs

I think friction pegs on a soprano or concert are the way to go. If you don't like the stock ones, you can find some cool translucent ones in different colors that really add the bling to your uke.

The planatary tuners on the Tyler Mtn banjo uke sure beat the frction tuners on the Goldtone! I think they would be too big for a small uke. The peghead tuners are the answer but cost almost a hundred bucks. I am going to order an Ohana CK35G tomorrow with Grover 4B tuners. MGM only wants 25 bucks to make this change. It should be worth it I don't like the white plastric tuners that come stock on the Ohanas.
