from what I've heard so far, people interested in ukuleles go through several stages:

cheap soprano stage

mid-priced concert stage

more expensive concert or tenor stage

expensive soprano stage

How has it worked for you?

I started on some mid range solid-wood sopranos by Tangi, a maker in Hawaii. Then after I got decent (meaning I could play a few chords) and was relatively sure that I wasn't going to quit...and saved up the money from working all summer, I went and bought my first "real" ukulele: a brand new shiny Kanilea K1-T. And from there, it all went downhill. I don't like to think about it or talk about it. :p

cheap soprano '93
koaloha concert '97
Lanikai LU21T & Rogue Bari '06
Lanikai O6 '07
Bugs Gear Eleuke '08

Currently ukeless, left my only two remaining ukes (Lu21t & koaloha concert) back home

I wouldn't mind having an expensive uke (especially for performing), but I am more than happy with just one and cheap at that, such as the rogue bari (gave to a friend) or the LU21T. 1 Sucken Benjamin, as long as I have something to play im all G.

This UAS thing idk, most other braddahs/sistahs I know only get 1 uke, 2 at the most.

So far its spot on

I play mandolin, pennywhistle, guitar etc. I saw a pic of a bright green flying V soprano which was very cheap so I bought it on a whim.
The quality is not very good, but I had a surprising (to me) amount of fun with it. Somewhere along the way I came across the Jake S video of While My Guitar etc. and saw what a serious instrument the uke can be.
Got to actually see Jake at the end of June, and he autographed my Flying V uke. After that, I just had to get a tenor and ended up buying a Lanikai spruce top which I like just fine and will hold me for quite a while.

I gotta tell you that most other instruments have their own acquisitive disorders. I myself help feed WHOA (WHistle Obsessive Acquisitive disorder) in pennywhistle players. I was following a bass guitar forum for a while and guess what? Those guys are into it too, and their instruments cost 'way more than most ukes. I wonder if pianists are similarly afflicted...:D

It seems a fairly good theory IME. I've got the cheap soprano now (well..two and a half really  ) , and am planning to buy a mid-range one, but I'm not sure whether to get another soprano or a concert.:)

My UAS has followed a meandering path:

1.) cheap soprano (Mahalo)
2.) luthier made concert (Williams)
3.) soprano (G-String)
4.) tenor (Pono)
5.) soprano (Kiwaya KTS-4)
6.) soprano scale/concert body (Ohana Vita)
7.) concert (Ohana CK35G)
8.) tenor (Kanilea K-1)
9.) concert (akulele)
10.) soprano (Koaloha Pineapple)
11.) concert (Cole Clark)

I sold the Pono tenor (although it was a nice uke) and will probably sell the Kanilea tenor in the near future. I have found that I prefer soprano and concert size so I really don't play the tenors. I really wish the Kanilea was a concert because it is such a nice uke.

Of course the word "stage" means that there can be several representatives on the same level :p. Given that as a premise, you are most certainly right!

OMG! I am deep into the UAS cycle of life!

1. Santini f hole tenor ( goes back and forth 'tween me and a GF)
2. Oscar Schmidt spruce top soprano (U13)
3. Oscar Schmidt Koa concert (U5DL)

1) Denial:
Denial is usually the first stage of UAS. We try to convince
ourselves that we can live without another ukulele.
2) Anger:
Next we recognizes that denial cannot continue. Denial is
replaced by anger, accompanied by feelings of rage and envy.
Everybody seems to have a better looking and sounding ukulele
3) Bargaining:
The third stage involves the hope that the individual can
find an unbelievable offer on e-bay. Days are spent in bidding wars
4) Depression:
During the fourth stage, the e-bay bargain ukulele arrives and much
time is spent crying and grieving over the flaws in the instrument.
It is not recommended to attempt to cheer an individual up that
is in this stage. It only reminds him of his flawed judgment
5) Acceptance:
We accept the flaws in the present instrument. Learn from our mistakes
and in a short while repeat the process from stage one.

These are the stages of UAS

I've been progressing through the stage you mentioned. Cheap soprano, mid concert, and then high tenor. But my next uke isn't going to be an expensive soprano. I need at least 16 frets to play. I'm still looking for a nice concert or tenor to get. :)

My problem is deciding between a new guitar and a new ukulele.

Sad, true, & HYSTERICALLY FUNNY!!!
