I'm on a mission to find all the sad songs I can on the uke, or just songs that have already been covered and work well with a somber tone on ukulele. Now that I have a banjolele as well, it's tough trying to play anything somber on that, but so far old songs of Irish rebellion work well if they aren't strummed. I'll post a video of "Minstrel Boy" (a ballad for a slayn Irish national) on the banjolele in a few days, but until then I was wondering what you guys play when you're in a somber mood and pick up the uke...

Try Skibbereen or The Praties

Or what about some of the 1950s/60s death rock - Tell Laura I love Her or Johnny Remember me or Leader of the Pack. Old Shep can still bring a tear to my eye.

I sometimes play singer-songwriter stuff on the uke, like Elliott Smith or Bright Eyes. They write some really sad songs. Not all songs adapt to the uke equally well, but some are actually really good.

"An attempt to tip the scales" by Bright Eyes for example.

for my money nobody does sad on ukulele like jacob borshard, all his songs are free to download at his website
http://www.creebobby.com/
he also has tabs for his CD the last brontosaurus (though they're a little hard to read
Seeso and I worked out one of his songs here

and seeso did all the work on this one

if you want a pure instrumental this is really nice
http://home.arcor.de/crazydawg/ukulele/autumn_leaves.txt especially if you jazz it up a little
all else fails, I believe this is the saddest song in existence

and there's plenty of tabs for it

There is a lot of emo stuff on youtube. Death cab for cutie, bright eyes and so on. Works very well on uke. I really like the combination of the bright ukey sound and saaaaad songs:music:.

I really love this one. Link.

I've been trying to learn it myself but I'm way way way way way too crap for it.

Tab here. Link.
