I can play major 7ths and dominant 9th chords but I'm wondering now people play the more exotic jazz chords on their ukes. For instance, how would you play an Emaj9 or an an F13b9. Is there a resource that I can use that will show me these types of chords? can someone explain it to me? I know some music theory so I shouldn't be completely lost. I'm just wondering how you can do that if you only have four strings.

Thanks for any help.

Sometimes you just have to sacrifice one of the notes. Always try to drop the perfect 5th first because it adds the least amount of character to a chord. For the Emaj9, you could play it as 1426 (starting at the g) which gives you the maj9 flavor. Kind of a stretch, but not too bad on a soprano.

I'm not familiar with that other chord. What notes are in it?

Even piano players drop notes out of those chords.

You just have to make a judgment call. There are notes that are commonly dropped, but it comes down to what you think sounds best for the song you're playing. Interestingly enough, the root is commonly dropped.

For Emaj9, I might play 8879 - 7(D#), 3(G#), 5(B), 9(F#).

For F13b9, you could play 6665 - b7(Eb), b9(Gb), 11(Bb), 13(D).
