View Full Version : Wanted: Ukulele Underground Car sticker

Hi,

I put an UU sticker on my car. But I guess the sticker is not suitable for outdoor use. It has been bleached severely by the sun and weathered by the elements. And I've put it there only 2 months ago (see picture below.)

Now here's my question: Could you produce another quality of UU stickers that could be used outdoors? Since John Irving has started his "UkuleleInYourCar" channel on YT, I guess other members would love such a sticker, too!

http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=516&pictureid=3127

Click here for a scanned version of the sticker! (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showpost.php?p=198529&postcount=9)

I own a printing company, and I can produce these for you guys at a very low cost. My markup on this type of product is fairly high, but I'm willing to do them for say... cost plus a few t-shirts (and shipping).

PM me and let me know.

It would be awesome to have it be a die-cut vinyl decal.

You can see an example of this on the Honda Element Owner's Club website (http://www.hondaclubstore.com/element-owners-club/merch.htm) (scroll down a bit to get to the stickers). I've got one of these on my E and it looks really nice.

Wow... these die-cut vinyl decals seem to be high-end!! :shaka:

Hmm, I'd already be thankful for a "normal" sticker that would last for 2 years or so. ;)

You vote for expensive.

The logo for the Element is simpler than the UU logo that appears at the top of this page, or the one on his car (which I couldn't find in the UU Store).

The "voids", or negative space, need to be removed by hand. This process is ironically called "weeding". As you can see, this would be very time consuming using the logo as it stands.

Not saying it can't be done, but I think there would be less takers if they put a retail price on it that is out of reach for some.

I could do a short-run for those that want them. Even in custom colors to fit your car. But, I won't do anything until I hear from staff.

Not to mention it would probably be tough to apply a decal with that many "fiddly bits". I think a simplied alternative version of the logo without the grass would work best for such a decal (assuming the UU gods approve such a modification, of course).

But if it's nine or ten bucks? Heck, I'd buy one. Cheaper than a shirt. :D

I scanned the sticker for you (I still have this one that is not stuck on anything). So you may see what it looks like. Dimensions are 140 mm x 50 mm.

That's a little easier.

They are actually pretty easy to apply. They have a backing liner that holds it all together.

Here's some threads about UU stickers/decals:
http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12802
http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?t=917

and finally from Ryan

we're going to be making some cheap graffiti stickers soon that we'll probably just give away and throw in with orders. Bigger more fancy stickers would be coming soon after that. We got some new designs we're working on too.

Believe me, you're not the only one waiting for 'em and it's been a long time for some of us.

Who is Dino and may we have a look at his UUmobile, please? :D

Some thoughts of mine... (to whom it may concern)
Hmm, isn't it always the same: Somebody opens and thread, some people comment then someone says something like "Boo... are you dump? Haven't you seen this old xy thread??" then a post whore says something... then end of thread! :wallbash:

Ladies and gentlemen... if all topics have already been discussed (and I'm sure they have!!) why do forums like this just simply close down or switch to "read only mode"?

Hmm... I guess this has also been said many times before... but no, I'm not using the search function and I'm not going to read through a 2-year-old thread of other smart-alecks like me... *lol* (Where's the fun???)

Don't we have the right to blather on about something that has been already said somewhere else? What is the NY Times doing each day?? :uhoh:

yeah, it has been said before, and when anyone does it, its so the person asking for something has something else to read. that new thread is still valuable because new information by possibly new members can be contributed there.

This may be a dumb idea, but if the above mentioned UU-Logo could be provided as a vector graphic, everyone could use it for personal purpose. No matter if you want a "die cut vinyl decal", a simple sticker, fridge magnet, desktop background or a ukey theme for your mobile. It is really simple to provide (download) and everyone could use his local manufacturers to build his favourite UU-Gadget. I like the idea of having the UU-Logo as, say, "basic" model, easy available to anyone in the world and probably more fancy designs available only at the UU-store. Of course the original designer should be asked first;)

Whaddaya think?

wow, bummer Dirk! i've had my UU sticker on my car for over a year and it hasn't faded. and then again, the sticker is protected in a thick layer of SF fog for most of the year. :)

Hmm... maybe it's due to the combination of acidic rain and sunshine here? I just recall that I haven't washed my car since I put the sticker on, btw. (Afraid the sticker might come off!) But you may be right Russ, I've just checked it: Part of what I considered to be "bleached" has proved to be a thin layer of dust and dirt! :D

... still I think an outdoor-resistant UU sticker would be awesome!! :nana:

Why not just get one printed that sticks on the inside of a window and shows the image on the other side (I've got a few stickers like this on my car now). No need to worry about weather then.

Heck, you could even just tape it on the inside of a window haha.

I think these guys are providing an extremely valuable service on nothing but a shoestring. When Aldrine came out to California he was sleeping on coaches and getting rides from friends so that he could give a $10 concert. This is his living! And no, the designer does not own the logo, Ukulele Underground does. But, knowing what a tight knit group this is, the designer is probably one of them.

You are absolutely right about the valuable service the UU-staff provides. I just donīt get the point concerning a downloadable vector-logo. Aldrine is making a living vom selling stickers ? I a-b-s-o-l-u-t-e-l-y had no idea ! The only person I can see in this thread, making a living out of printing and selling stickers is -surprise,surprise- DogBisquit.

BTW: The idea was about providing the basic UU-Logo as a community service. It is not exactly difficult for anyone around here to transfer an existing jpeg of the logo to a vector graphic and get it printed by a local dealer, because most available graphic editors are capable of this process . BUT I would like the idea of an official UU-service MUCH better. It is easy to provide, contributes a lot to member affection and is a great and free-of-cost marketing tool for UU. And I am pretty sure, store-sales wonīt be affected, but instead also benefit from the marketing effect.

I always wondered how UU staff could maintain UkuleleUnderground. Hmm, I guess that another quality of stickers that would be SOLD in the UU store and not just THROWN IN with other purchases could help spreading the popularity of UU around the world AND also provide another source of income for the UU staff.
A downloadable version of the sticker should be ruled out! It would also be important that all stickers look the same. UU is a brand and should be treated as such!

No, I'm saying every little bit helps.

Do I make a living printing? Yes. But, I offered to print these at my cost. So, fault me if you will, but I want to see these guys be successful and it's the least I can do.

And, yes, I do think it would hurt store sales. If I found a bumpersticker quality label at their store I would buy it today, and I've got the equipment in the backroom to do it myself. Even with shipping from the islands it would be less expensive than producing one, for the average person. And, again, they get to make money.

Sure, they have put this enterprise together out of passion, but passion alone doesn't keep them in potato-mac.

Couldn't wait. I ordered a couple shirts this morning. After the other weekend, I'm just gotta represent! (Doesn't mean the deal's off).

I really have no idea what's in the works as far as decals/stickers. I would suggest contacting Ryan or the admin folk with your proposal and see what comes of it. Believe me, there's a whole lot of us wanting them for cars, uke cases and whatever you can stick them on.

All they need to do is upload it to Cafe Press, and then we can have all we'd like, from bumper stickers to tee shirts, and more.

You need to have a product first and someone has to produce the stickers/decals before they can be presented on the web site.

I whipped an unofficial one up and ordered it from Cafe Press. It's slightly different than the regular one, so everyone will know it's "unofficial," but I did it up in Adobe Illustrator, so it'll be clean and look nice. I'll have mine by the end of the week. Cost including shipping was less than $6.

CafePress is all on-demand, and uses a UV printer. These have a maximum outdoor rating of 2 years. Of the $5, before shipping costs, UU would get to keep $1.51.

What I am proposing is a screen-printed vinyl sticker with a 5 year rating, and in which UU would be able to pocket closer to $4.50. That's if they kept the same retail pricing as CafePress.

I wasn't trying to suggest CafePress was the most cost effective way to go, just that, for right now, it's the only way to go, available to me, anyway. I've had a BIODIESEL: NO WAR REQUIRED bumper sticker from CafePress on my diesel volkswagen for the past four years, it looks tired, but it's not faded. It was a simple black and white one.

Love the bio-diesel thing. My brother's running his Jetta wagon the same way in Maui. I guess it's big over there (thanks to Willie Nelson?!?), and they're running heavy on the bio, unlike the 5-10% you see state-side.

Got my shirts today! And getting back on topic, yes they threw in a sticker (and a kind, handwritten note).
