ideally you wipe it down after each session...clean it more often

I tend to perspire a lot (all over, not just the fret hand) so you will see in my picture a white wash cloth on my lap for hands and face.
I rarely wipe down my fretboard, only when I remember, and haven't had any moisture-related concerns/difficulties.
My primary concern is with the strumming area at the top bout right where the fretboard ends. I've taken to (shudder) applying clear packing tape to the area like a cheap "pick guard". I feel that it does protect the top of the wood from having the lacquer flake off, but then I am applying a piece of tape to the beautiful wood. It's not too distracting however. The Uke still looks beautiful and I'm not ruining it with my fingernails.
Don't be embarrassed to carry and use a little towel. I bring one (white of all colors) all the time.
