View Full Version : Sonny Daze TV Challenge

O.K. I'm not a technical person, so I hope this goes out correctly.

My Challenge to the Ukulele Underground: Sonny Daze TV Challenge:

Here are the rules:

Play a song from TV. Any Era, old TV or new TV. Check out the youtube video on the rules of the challenge at

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EgbfougKfk

It's pretty simple. Play something that you heard on TV. Theme songs from tv shows, and commercials. Be Creative!! Artistically embellish all you want.

The winner gets a micro scaled cigar box ukulele that doesn't sound half bad. It was an experiment, not the Stradavarious of ukes, but it is really nice looking and can carry a tune.

Couple of rules: No editing or dubbing. Just you and your instrument, one take. That keeps it fair for those that do not have the software or system support to make more developed videos.

Post your entry on youtube and mention that it's for the Sonny Daze TV Challenge. Also post a link to this thread.

I'll get some decent photo's of the prize mini uke in my album at my page in the UU (Russ Sonny Kemner)

The contest ends Dec. 2nd at Midnight eastern time, and only 2 entries are allowed per participant.

Creatvity, musicianship, and effort are the 3 criteria of judging.

Winner gets the mini cigar box uke. There is no 2nd or third place, Sorry about that, but there will be an honorable mentions for bragging rights.

Good luck. If you have any questions, please contact me. I have never hosted a contest before, so if I missed anything, please let me know.

Thanks and good luck.

If you live somewhere where I can ship the ukulele, than you are eligible. So basically anyone on the planet earth can apply.

I would open this up to life forms on other planets, but I am not sure if they exist and insurance on intergalactic postage is is just too much to ask for.

So please feel free to enter Ogikloavailable.

Is there a time limit on the videos?

Also, if I don't want to show my face on YouTube, is it okay to have a single image showing instead of me? No fancy editing or anything. Just one relevant photo (probably the logo of the show involved) with the audio.

Russ Sonny Kemner
09-28-2009, 11:47 AM
There are no time limits on the entries (total song length). But still only 2 entries per participant and the deadline is Dec 2nd.

TV songs from any country are acceptable.

Regarding the post above, I'm o.k. if you do not want to show your face just a image of the show is o.k., but still one take, no sound editing.

Sound fair?

O.K. Brlfl I will let the two bar kazoo intro in to the contest. I was thinking more in the lines of duets, percussion, other stringed instruments etc. when I set up the rules, but as long as it is you, your uke, your kazoo intro all in one take, sounds o.k. I would not disqualify for that.

Let'er rip!!

It is a Hamano Concert from MGM. I think they are copies of old Martin ukuleles. Made in China but very well made, all solid mahogany, bone nut and saddle. The concert was about $300 when I got it about two years ago, I think it is a great instrument for the money.:D

Hey Russ,

Can I clarify? Does it have to be the THEME tune of a TV show?

Only I noticed that there are some hilarious Smurf songs on YouTube. All sung by the Smurfs, but not the main title theme. Would they be ok?

Many apologies if I'm splitting hairs, but I grew up watching the Smurfs cartoon, you see :D

Russ Sonny Kemner
10-04-2009, 02:40 PM
Sure you can sing a smurf song. This is something you heard on TV, not really a radio played song, so I am cool with that.

So as an addendum to the rules: feel free to use music heard on tv, including not only theme songs and commercial jingles but also songs performed within the context of the show or commercial.

Some other examples: The Smelly Cat song that Pheobe sang on Freinds, and the song Johnny Bravo (AKA Greg Brady) sang on the Brady Bunch. - speaking of the Brady Bunch, any song by the Brady 6 or the Partridge Family is also o.k.

When I was a kid, I saw an episode of Loony Toons where Bugs Bunny did a hilarious square dance song, so anything along those lines would be a perfectly acceptable entry.

Some people have asked about music on television outside the US. That is o.k. too. This is not mandatory, but it helps if you mention the show that music came from, so I can see the original version - usually posted on youtube.

Here is the first Yopp entry. Yep, Its Yopp, all unplugged and uncloned. Man it was hard. I kept thinking "This could use some bass, maybe the PVC trombone.. oh and some tamborine, maybe I could play the bones... and what if the Yoppettes did some do-wahs in the background.. maybe I could greenscreen myself into a clip of Monk and Adrian could be cleaning something while I sing or ....."

Cold turkey. Thats the ticket. Of course, I will go back and do it again later. *grin*

Dear Russ,

Thank you so much for hosting the Sonny Daze TV Challenge contest.
Id love to have that cigarbox ukulele!

My favorite chapter in TV history of all times is the American show Northern Exposure, aired in Germany under the name "Ausgerechnet Alaska", and in France as "Bienvenue en Alaska".
Do you remember "Old Tree" (last episode of season 4), when pregnant Shelly Tambo cannot speak any more, but only sing?

This is my version of Shelly's Lullaby:

The original is here on YouTube:

I just turned 42 in July, raised in the sticks of Wisconsin we had 4 channels of TV ....... ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS... had to use the bottom UHF clicker to get PBS... no cable, no HBO, so I can relate! Outside of Saturday morning cartoons, Fantasy Island and the Dukes of Hazard, PBS was the bomb as far as television viewing goes back in the day!! Brought back some memories. Great song!!

Wow, what a great experience... hosting a contest.

Everyone did an exceptional job with your submissions!!!

Judging the entries was much more difficult than I had anticipated and I wish I had a prize for every submission.. each and every one was outstanding, much better than I could have done.

So here I stand humbled by your fine musicianship, energy, courage and effort....

As it has been said in the greatest movie of all time (The Highlander) there can be only one. Well actually there were three.... I put together a couple of two string cigar box fretless mini slide diddley bows for runners up.

Thank you to all of you that participated in this contest. It has been a blast!!

Congrats winners! And thanks Russ for holding this contest - I love tv theme songs, so had a ton of fun watching these awesome uke renditions of them.
