View Full Version : None of my business: Mainland Ukes & Rope Binding

Question: If you could change the rope binding on Mainland Ukes to something else ... but with the proviso that there had to be a visual binding there. What would you change it to?

Reason asked. Seems like there are quite a few post commenting about how good the customer service is and the great tone of Mainland Ukuleles. But folks pass on them because they don't care for the look of the rope binding. I find that I have a similar attitude. Yet for the life of me I can't come up with something I would prefer. I am assuming that the factory requires some type of distinguishing difference from other brands which are made at the same factory.

I love the rope binding on my Mainland Pineapple, separates it from my other pineapples.

I don't have one, but I think the rope binding looks great. If they were to change it, I don't know, maybe checkered binding would look good.

Easy, Skittles. And every time I took a bite of the binding, new Skittles would appear.

Ska checkers, but the rest of the instrument would have to be black and white, too.

(Although I like the rope inlay just fine.)

Firstly, Welcome to UU! What great timing for you to post this question!

The rope-binding is very traditional with stringed instruments. I believe Mainland is harking back to those with its binding. Here's a pic of a French guitar from the Baroque era:

Here's another:

Love this painting of one:

Taste is subjective, but the rope-binding connects Mainland ukes to a rich history!

I lurve rope binding, but if I had to replace it - herringbone.

As far as I can tell, rope binding has always been present in the history of the uke and the Mainlands proudly reflect that tradition.

I'd pay an extra $20 if it was chocolate that did the same.

That wil teach me to post here . You've managed to take a fairly mundane subject such as "rope binding" and kick it up several notches to something really worthwhile ... DESERTS!

Well just to let ya folks know I can play that game also. Caramel Cremes for the peg heads. Strap out of candy button strips. For an audience make them Slo-poke suckers.

I'm with you, MoreUke. Not quite sold on the rope binding. If Mainland started making them without it, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

But, assuming that some sort of binding had to be there (a big assumption), then I'd go for just a simple, thin solid white one. Mabye some discrete MOP.

Welcome to UU, MoreUke!

I have a Mainland soprano, and I must admit that when I first saw pictures of Mainland Ukes online, I absolutely hated the rope binding. However, when I saw them in person it was a different story. I think it's beautiful. The photos just don't do it justice in my opinion. I don't know why, It is a mystery...
If you see one in person and you still don't like it, then that's cool, everyone has different tastes, but I wouldn't write it off completely until you've seen it IRL.

But don't call it Mainland. Maybe we need a contest to properly name the line of Main-Janes.

Ha! I posted that at exactly the same time as my brutha DeG!

Hmm, the rope binding has alwayts been one of my favorite parts of the Mainlands, I even looked into other ukuleles with rope binding a few months ago because I couldn't afford a Mainland. Oh well, to each his own I guess.

Almond M&Ms. Now we're talking.

My weakness.

I like the rope binding. Mele used to make a uke like that and I think they still do but it is harder to find. My initial draw to mainland ukes was the rope. But if I had to have something else, maybe a Hawaiian warrior triangle checker pattern or a Celtic knot pattern.

I like herringbone, but a plain binding would be nice, too. Perhaps ebony, or another dark wood, with a light perfling.
