Hello all! I've got questions loaded up with comparisons, so here goes.

So my next uke will, I think, be the Oscar Schmidt OU5, but I need to get a case for it as well since it will be my first concert uke. I found what looks like a great deal at http://www.themusicmotel.com/store/product.asp?pid=468&catid=477&vid=979 where they sell the uke and its case (http://www.themusicmotel.com/store/product.asp?pid=642&catid=477&vid=979 - the case is usually about $50 elsewhere) together for $166.

At the same time, if I were to purchase the uke and a different, more inexpensive--though seemingly still as good--case (either http://www.amazon.com/Lanikai-Hards...8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1254681916&sr=1-7 or http://www.amazon.com/Lanikai-Conce...ts&qid=1254681853&sr=8-6#moreAboutThisProduct) from Amazon, my total would come out to about $170; not much of a difference.

Long story short: Does anyone have any experience with either of the three cases? And then the second question would be whether or not themusicmotel.com is a reputable site, because, if it turns out to be sketchy, I'll just go to Amazon.

Thanks!

I've never heard of the music motel, so I can't comment on that, but the two amazon cases are the same case, just from different sellers. That is the same case Music Guy Mic, a popular ebay seller, sends along with most of his ukes. I've got one and I think it gives great protection.

Where are you located? I think you would be better off going with MGM as previously stated. Here's one option for you, Kala KA=CEM which IMO is a better deal than the OU-5. Anyways, something to think about. Oh, the cases are pretty much the same; a lightweight, hardshell type case which will provide ample protection for any instrument.

I'd go the MGM route as well. For $159 shipped you can get a Kala KA-SC. It has a solid spruce top (the OU5 is all laminate), setup with aquila strings and comes with a hardshell case and other goodies. Ukulele4u on ebay has the same thing(setup, quila strings, case, etc.) in tenor scale, Lanikai S-T for the same price if you're interested in going the tenor route. Lanikai and Kala ukes are very similar, almost the same thing and both Ukulele4u and MGM are reputable sellers.

The solid wood Oscar Schmidt ukes sound really nice, Ukulele Mike uses them almost exclusively in his lessons on youtube, but the laminated models are so-so. I think there's better, cheaper laminate ukes in the Kala and Lanikai lines.

As far as the cases go, that case will be fine. As previously said, MGM ships ukes in those cases and he isn't known for stocking crappy products.

I agree, the Kala is the better deal, and MGM's the way to go.... :agree:

I agree with the recommendation to buy from MGM. The Kala flamed mahogany concert ukulele at about $145. is a great deal. I have one of those and it is a very nice sounding and playing instrument. The UkeCrazy zippered semi-hard case affords excellent protection. Hope this helps...:D

Hmm, I like that Kala... Does he generally have them continually in stock (would he have them until December-ish?)?

Kala > Oscar Schmidt

:2cents:

Check out ukerepublic.com as well. He carries kalas and other comparable ukes. He also got a new line in that sounds great but unfourtunately I can't remember the name. I'll say that wheter u go with mgm, ukerepublic or ukuleles4u you won't go wrong.
