woop woop everyone, I'm new to the forum so I guess this is the place to be. I've been playing for about 8 months now and it's fair to say I'm completely and totaly sh*t at it but I'm determined conquer this great instrument and one day win a grammy for greatest music ever played on a pink concert uke by someone from a small European mountainous country who sings horribly out of tune. Surely, that's a genre.

Anyway, nice to know there are so many uke lovers out there as everyone here just refers to the uke as either that little guitar or isn't that a toy? That hurts people. It hurts. *falls down wailing*

Hi everyone, I'm Joe from Quebec City, QC (Canada) and I study computer science. I just ordered my uke (a Kala KA-S) and found your forum. I played piano for quite a few years but have not played much music these last years so playing ukulele will be a new start! I'm looking forward to receiving it and reading tips from the pros on this board!

Hi -

I'm Kevin, I've been playing ukulele for about 5 weeks. I'm a lifelong guitarist and got the uke bug after hearing Iz and Jake.

Also have quickly gotten a case of UAS. I have a Makala I bought locally and then went to Oahu and got a very nice Kanile'a at Pua Pua.

Kevin, welcome to UU. Caught the bug right away, eh? Heheh... You'll also fit right in here. We are all stricken with UAS!

Don't forget to post a picture of your ukes in the Ukulele Porn (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1732) thread. I should also tell you about the Kanile'a Club (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8940), seeing as you're the proud owner of one.

Just throwing my hello out there as well. Hope all is well with everyone!

My brief introduction: Iím new to the uke but have some musical background. Iíve played bass guitar for years and was in a couple local bands, but then we all grew up, got married, had babies, etc. Since itís so much harder to get together and jam as a band now, I needed something I could mess with by myself around the house. Iíve always loved the sound of a ukulele Ė (and being a lover of four-string instruments) Ė it seemed like a natural fit!

Anyway, just got my first uke Ė a Kala KA-C, and have started working on chords and stuff. I love it, and this site has been a great resource! Thanks!

Hi all. Uke noob signing in (not the first and I suspect not the last! :))

Bought my first uke as a completely sober (weirdly!) purchase from E-bay at about 1am a few weeks ago. A sparkly black Mahalo came in the post soon after. Inspired by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain I thought it looked fun and was a cheap little hobby.

Oh how wrong you can be! I now have my eye on two further ukuleles, one a 'vintage' - if that is how you could describe a >5 year old uke - and a new one to replace the Mahalo (which is always out of tune due to the wonky bridge - characterful I call it :D)

Still not very good at this uke lark but have been scouring the net for hints, tips and advice and found this place, it looks

Cheers

Hi everyone! My name is Stephanie, and I live in Iowa (though I'm originally from California, and I spend a good deal of time in Missouri and Louisiana.) I bought my first uke about 8 hours ago and have spent about 3 hours practicing already. Instant addiction! I'm really anxious to learn some songs, though I have to get chords and strumming down first.

I appreciate all the great advice on this forum and I hope to someday be able to contribute :)

Kia ora all,

Im pretty new around these parts so i though i would introduce my self. My name is Chris and i am from Aotearoa/New Zealand. I am Māori as you can tell from the above greetings. I have been playing Ukulele for around 4 years but have only just started playing "popular songs" I used to only play traditional Māori songs and tried really hard not to play pop songs but i suppose the whole reason i started playing was to have fun so now i play whatever songs make me feel happy be it Māori, pop or whatever.

So hello everyone and now i think there are two Māori on UU myself and UkulelesReggae. By the way UkulelesReggae what iwi are you from???

Anyway everyone its great to be here and be a part of the UU family.

Kia Ora Koutou!

Cheers, Ace-T. I've heard that if you flip the saddle around on those Mahalos, their intonation gets better. You might want to try it. Also, if you're going to replace it anyway, you might as well lower the action (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showpost.php?p=145391&postcount=6) on it just for the practice.

Thanks seeso. I've really been enjoying learning the uke, and watching a lot of people's videos here has been a treat! Someday maybe I can get one together myself!

As for basses, I guess I've always been partial to Fender electric basses - I have a Jazz (my fave) and a P Bass. I also have an acoustic, the El Capitan by Epiphone.

It was recently brought to my attention that I never introduced myself. So here goes...

I'm Josh. I live in Virginia in the US.
I've been playing ukulele since December 9, 2008. I'm currently playing a Kala Tenor (Thanks MGM!)

I always considered myself a bass player till I discovered uke.

This seems like a really cool site. I can't wait to start posting!!

Yup, a natural fit! As for the Fenders, my Precision is a slightly older Mexican model (late 80s early 90s maybe?). The Jazz is a US made 2003.

Hello all, My name is Matt. I live in Watertown Tennessee and have been playing uke for about 3 years. I have been playing just a few chords up to this point, to accompany myself on original songs. Since I saw Seeso's hip hop contest, I have been entrenched in youtube and UU- which leads me to this: I had a dream last night that I was on a river barge with a group of Vaudevillians who spoke Lithuanian, then I got Deach'd.
WoW.

Cool. I have kind of a hard time playing normal scale basses. I'm a small guy. Consequently, I have a 3/4 scale Electromatic (http://images.miretail.com/products/optionlarge/GretschGuitars/531589jpg.jpg). I like it.

Hi, This site is great!
I'm just started to learn Ukulele when I first saw Jake Shimabukuro plays his While my guitar gently weeps with his Ukulele :)

That's what inspired me to fall in love with ukulele and make me buy my first ukulele from musicguymic on eBay :D

And I'm also doing my own small community website here in my country:

I have a background in classical guitar and mandolin.

Today I found out I won a tenor uke in a drawing and I'm pretty stoked about checking out this new little buddy and seeing what I can do with it. It's the Cordoba/Donavon Frankenreiter signature model.

http://cordobaguitars.com/104.php

I've actually been really curious and interested in ukes ever since I was first blown away hearing Jake Shimabukuro play "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" months ago. So I guess it's fate. :p

Hope to see you all around. :)

Cheers, everyone!

I just bought a yellow Makala Uke with Aquila (sp?) strings from musicguymic on eBay after researching into it for a month or two. Seems like a good one to start with. I dunno how long it's gonna take though caus it has to come all the way to Ireland!

I play the piano already but I wanted something to carry round with me, which you can't do with a piano :p .And plus I suck at guitar.

Umm...yeah that's it. I hope to learn lots here!! bye! :shaka:

How long have you been playing / what do you play? About 6 months and I started with a cheap 60$ Hilo Baritone but stepped it up recently to a Lanikai LU-21BE acoustic / electric baritone. I gotta say... it's a HUGE step up not only for the sound but for my confidence. So far I've learned a few Beirut songs, Bob Marley's - Waiting In Vein, Somewhere Over The Rainbow / What a Wonderful World, and one I picked up off of youtube written by a very good artist. Anyway, thank Allah, or God or whoever you pray to .. that U.U. exists.. this place is the 'bees knees'.

Hi, everyone! I'm pretty new to ukuleles, but I've got my new concert-scale Flea pretty much worn in!

I live on an island in the ocean (Atlantic), so I feel the uke is tapping some long-lost Hawaiian kinship. :)

Hello all

I live in the L.A. area.
I have been a "recreational" guitar player for many years.
I have a 1981 Ibanez 6 stirng in the garage, a circa 1978 classical, and a 2007 Taylor 714CE in the bedroom.
I play primarily for stress reduction and my own fun.

I caught Uke fever last week on Kauai. serious case of fever.
I bought a Kamaka HF3. I thought what the heck, when you buy your first, go big!

I came home and bought a chord chart and now learning the chords on the uke.

my first conclusion is that clearly i need another one already to keep in the garage so I can practice more.

looking forward to learning a lot here on this board...

thanks

Mark

I'm Angela, from Hiram, Maine

I am completely Ukulele challenged...

I am trying to get info. about Ukulele's because my Hubby wants one and I thought for his birthday I would purchase one for him. Now I'm worried because after much research, it seems to be such a personal choice as to which Ukulele to buy.

Hi!

I'm a musical idiot who for some strange reason bought a uke a while ago, and then decided to actually learn to play it. I've never played pretty much anything in my life, but well, you have to start somewhere. :P And I started to like this instrument immediately, it's so much more badass than a guitar.

I live in Finland, near the Eastern border in a small crappy place called Punkaharju. Most of my time I just sit on the computer or read and write stuff (mainly science fiction, urban fantasy and odd poetry), but my hobbies also include things like roleplaying and LARP. I'm on the 4th kyu in hokutoryu ju-jitsu too, but my career as an epic ninja is currently on hiatus due to a slight case of being incredibly lazy.

Brand new to the ukulele but played guitar back in college (didn't everyone??). Live in Chino Hills and try to surf a couple of times a week. Look forward to checking things out here. If there are any surfing uke players out there in the IE, let me know!

I just picked up uke and I'm lovin' it! The people are all so friendly, and it's easy to start and fun to play! Cheers for the ukulele! =D I also play piano, very very little guitar, some violin, and sing! =D My favorite is singing, though... because I can sing anywhere and it fits right with the ukulele! =D I realize I've used 3 of the same smilies in the past paragraph, but that's my favorite one.

Hey sunshines!
I'm Erin and I am from the magical land know as Houston, Texas. Got started with music when I was ten when I started learning the string bass for school. Eventually I started playing electric bass for my church's praise band which has been tight. I decided to buy a ukulele last summer because I found the need to have an instrument just for my own fun and to make others smile. I love noodling around on my lovely concert uke whenever I get the chance. It always brightens my day. :]

Hi I'm Kelly. I'm from NJ and I've been playing ukulele for about...3 days now? Hahaha. I just bought one from MGM on ebay and I love it. It's so cute and just so much fun to play. I've been playing guitar for about 5 years now but on and off, I actually stopped for a few years and just picked it up this past December and I've been playing it regularly, like every day regularly. I also dabbled in clarinet and piano but yeah mainly stuck with guitar. But I decided to switch it up a bit or you know stretch my learning or skill to another instrument so I chose the ukulele. As I said in the beginning, I got it about 3 days ago and I haven't stopped playing it since. I love it! :)

I live in Louisville, KY...play a bunch of instruments:

Mandolin, - I play bluegrass and jazz (the good old boys round here get a mite perturbed when I quote Charley Parker in my solos..."Ain't how Bill played it"
Sax, clarinet and flute - played them the longest, still play professional clarinet, mostly swing and jazz
Guitar - bluegrass, jazz and Western Swing
Steel Guitar - got that Western Swing thing going on
Uke - mostly jazz

Can you tell I'm into jazz?

aloha...I'm Jon Spencer. Obviously new to the forum. I play quite a few instruments including the uke. I recently decided to tap into the music community more to learn and grow. my first exposure to the uke was in college with my buddy Steven Saito (hawaiian native), man he can play. I love this site...shazaam!

I got laid off about 5 months ago, and decided I'd start making my own cigar box instruments. Its alot of fun, and the uke is my favorite to make. Here's a link to mypage...dont worry, its not a store or anything.

http://www.cigarboxnation.com/profile/spencer

scroll down a bit past the picture slideshow and there is a uke video under it...its mega short cuz my batteries kept dying on me. I'll do some more later, but would love some feedback tone etc. from real uke players...I dont know ANY. I only own a lanikai ck-teq (imagine that) so I dont have a large amount of comparison. Much aloha everyone

Hi! I'm Pamela and I've been playing ukulele for a few weeks and I am deeply, desperately in love. I used to fool with guitar but I never got too far -- I'm 'bout 4'11" and my tiny little hands just couldn't stretch. (Also, the lack of any inherent musical talent, but I'm hoping to make up for that with enthusiasm and tenacity.)

Now I think I've found my destiny! I'm also a kindergarten teacher, so I'm taking the summer to practice as much as possible in order to play in my classroom in the Fall. Won't the kinders love it??

So, *wave* nice to be here, thanks for having me!

Hello, UU! My name is Anders and I live in Norway, a small country on top of a mountain next to the north pole. Music has always been an important part of my life and I have played various instruments over the years... until my father gave me with a ukulele last christmas. Now I play only one :D

I fell instantly in love.

It was a cheap little laminate Morgan soprano with sunburst finish. The frets are not really in tune, it has a thin but nice tone and a surprisingly nice action. Needless to say, it has become a source of joy and inspiration in my life.

Now I have the UAS.

I'm waiting for my first tenor to arrive from MGM, after picking up some good advice in these forums. For this and for all of the knowledge and inspiration being shared so generously - thanks guys! I'll stay tuned :)

Music has always been an important part of my life and I have played various instruments over the years... until I had to stop playing altogether about 10 years ago due to some weird muscular inflammations in my left arm. I fell instantly in love.

In upstate New York for now

Started playing Uke about 4 months ago because I live in an apartment building and the ukulele is less annoying to my neighbors than the trumpet or french horn I have. I'm probably annoying my neighbors more than ever now because I'm playing the uke all the time, morning and night.

Started playing Uke about 4 months ago because I live in an apartment building and the ukulele is less annoying to my neighbors than the trumpet or french horn I have. I'm probably annoying my neighbors more than ever now because I'm playing the uke all the time, morning and night.

Hello! I'm Daniel, i just got my Ukulele today, i couldnt wait until my birthday which is on the 20th so i convinced my mom to buy me a Uke today. Its a Kala KA-C and i got it for $80 flat, (from $130). The store moved to its new grand opening place so i got it for $80. :)

Whats up! My name is Kaleo and i'm form Las Vegas(though originally from Kailua).I have been playing the uke for 2years.I found this awsome site by following a link from one of Aldrines youtube vids and decided to join.:D

So this weekend I took the plunge and bought a (cheap) Lanikai ukulele. I am so excited for it to arrive - I just can't wait for it to get here!

Hrm. what else - I'm in my early 30's, married. I run a web design company from my couch with my 2 trusty basset hounds. I've got a pretty eclectic taste in music - and I am so inspired by everybody's youtube vids - I really want to eventually get to the point where I can jump in and make my own.

Welcome to UU all of you!

Aloha All,

Uncle Rod Higuchi here from somewhat sunny Seattle, WA. It's bit overcast right now, bu the rest of the week looks bright. Don't tell anyone who is under the impression that it only rains in Seattle.

I'll be heading home (Honolulu) on Sat to take in the Ukulele Festival, which
I thought was in a couple of weeks! Just found out it's this Sunday, the 19th!

I registered today so I could crash the BBQ at Kaka'ako Park on Sat.

I hope there are a few older guys like me so I won't feel out of place playing some of the older hapa-haole stuff.

Nice to meet you all.

My name is Adrienne, I currently live in Chicago and have been playing the uke 2 years this August! :music:

I bought my instrument at a tourist shop while visiting my aunt on the big island and thought, "There's a waste of $50! I'll never play it." I'm so happy to report how very, very wrong I was . . . I pick my uke up at least once a day if not more! I play a few other instruments (guitar, bass, piano) as well.

I only know one Hawaiian song: Drop Baby Drop . . . everything else I've learned (from tabs and figuring out stuff from a recording) would primarily be in the category of "really bad pop music." I'm in a Mariah Carey phase right now . . . big time. It's just horrible. :D

Hi, just started using UU, so I wanted to introduce myself..

Name's Brittni, and I am 19, and live in Pennsylvania. I laugh a lot and people cannot be around me without smiling from something I do or say. I attend college for Nursing, and am hoping to transfer from the University I am at now to attend PennState University Park. The most important thing about me is that I am approachable. I love people, and I am pretty simple and honest. Oh yeah, I sing. Everyone tells me I am pretty amazing, but I am very humble and like to just say I was born with it and it makes me happy. Music is my heart.

Enough of that, the reason I found out about ukulele and UU was pretty funny. Back in March, this disheveled boy walked into the Subway I worked at and started telling me all about where he attended school, where he lived, and included the fact that he had the worst travel day ever. I thought he was pretty charming and funny, and as he left I was KICKING myself for not saying, WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER YOU SEXY THING. Just kidding. But really, I was kicking myself. A few days passed and I see a familiar face walk in and I jumped from my chair which I had just sat down in for my 15 minute break, and ran up to make his sandwich. We talked for 20 minutes, and he left..without giving me his number. So a friend of mine was working and she ran outside, while telling me I was such an idiot for not asking him, and came back in followed by this boy, who I found out was named Colin (CoLmes). Fortunately, he was interested and invited me to a get together that night for St. Patrick's Day. After one night, and a long conversation on I could not remember what, we hit it off. A few days went by and he pulled out this mini guitar, and I was excited because it sounded fun and I can sing. Colin told me the first time I sang for him, which was Jason Mraz's I'm Yours, while he played the ukulele was the day he fell in love with me. I would not doubt it because music has brought us together in a beautiful way.

So now, I sit with a hand me down uke from my boyfriend, that I can only play a few chords and a little song I made up on, wanting to know more! I am most certain that UU is going to help me out a lot. Maybe one day, Colin and I can play together and make even better music. Until then, I will be here reading every informative thread and watching every video lesson I can!:)

Brand new to these forums but I have been checking out UU for a few weeks now!

Name: Michael
Location: Huntington Beach, CA but moving to Buffalo, New York for pharmacy school in a month
Been playing for: 1 week!

For the past month I've been thinking of buying a Uke and I finally bought a Lanikai S-TEQ and I am soooo happy! It looks, smells and feel great. The seller even gave me free Aquila strings! I recently bought a tuner and it turns out my tuning was way off so I highly recommend one for beginners.

Hi-- I'm Paul from Clifton Park NY (North of Albany). I play too many instruments for my own good including Pennywhistle (I make and sell exotic hardwood ones), flutes, recorder, mandolin, guitar, bit of fiddle, etc.
I bought a cheapo Flying V style uke a while back, but wanted to really start playing after I saw Jake Shimabukuru a few weeks ago. Holy moly, can that guy play! Just received my Lanikai spruce top yesterday.

Hello there peoples! I'm Kris, and I'm new to these parts.

I'm 21 and hail from one of the newest cities in the UK, Preston (Well, sort of... just outside of it!)

I've now been playing ukulele for about a year, I started off with a £20 blue one from the cheap music shop in Blackpool, and now I rock a Bugsgear Eleuke, and a broken (after a stupid soundguy knocked it off the top of an amplifier and stood on the headstock, knocking out some of the tuning pegs) electro acoustic Mahalo.

I also play guitar, stylophone and the vocal chords too!

I listen to a lot of punk, ska, ska punk, and theatrical punk (i.e. Gogol Bordello and World/Inferno Friendship Society). Favourite bands include 7 Seconds of Love, World/Inferno Friendship Society, AFI, The Offspring, Alkaline Trio, Greenday, Bad Religion, Sonic Boom Six, Random Hand, The Cute Lepers, Dead Pets.

And to finish, here is a picture of me rocking the f**k out with my last band, The Strikeouts (I occasionally played ukulele in this band too :))

I'm 20, I live in Delray Beach, FL and thought I'd start off with a little mahalo U-50 to take with me to the beach and see if I liked it...I'll definitely need to upgrade to a more serious uke later, but for now I love it! <3

Hello, my names Kenny, but everybody refers to me by this handle. I picked up the nickname from when I was a citrus horticulture major in Florida.

In any case, I'm rocking a Mu-100 Mitchell concert uke (almost a year now. play 3-5 hours a day) and will probably be picking up banjo in a little and probably pick up oboe again if I can find somebody to play with (don't much like the idea of solo songs for instrument that don't make play chords or can't be sung with).

As far as musical tastes I enjoy most types, but I'm really only passionate about anything by Jacob Borshard or Les Claypool. I'd recommend Borshard for everybody (plays electric uke and you can download all his music off his site) but the les claypool isn't for everybody unless you're into really bizarre jam band kind of stuff.

I'll probably be posting an awful lot at first since I've got a billion questions saved up, so please be patient if it seems I am everywhere. Anyways, I look forward to learning and maybe even teaching among all you guys.

Aloha,
My name is Brian. Along with my loving wife Shawn, son and daughter we live on the island of Oahu. Actually have been "lurking" on the UU site for quite sometime now and have finally decided to " officially" become a member of the UU ohana.
My wife and I were very fortunate to meet Aldrine, Ryan and Aaron at the Kakaako park meet up this past Saturday. Because I was of "lurker" status to Ukulele UnderGround, I was a bit hesitant in asking to "crash" this meet up. We introduced ourselves to the three of them and we were pleasantly surprised. In the true spirit of aloha, they opened their hearts up to us. All three of them are very "real and engaging" individuals. They all took the time to be sure that everyone who attended the meet up felt "at home". These three are representing and living aloha.
Again, beeg mahalos to Aldrine, Ryan and Aaron. If you guys need anykine help from ova hea; pick you guys up from da airport, maybe one sound system, or you like eat manapuas, no scared, jus email me an we go try work um out.
mahalos and aloha Brian

Ukulele-Hoo here. The handle refers to my daughter's friend mannerism at day camp of playing air-uke. I am a music teacher and play sax, trumpet, flute, keys, vocals, etc. in a wedding band. I got my Oscar Schmidt tenor two months ago, to play Over the Rainbow for a wedding. I play it an hour or two a day, learning and writing songs, and found Aldrine's lessons to be awesome. I'm biscuit and I'm addicted to the uke. I've come to stalk the Norwegians on the board in the hope that someone can point me to a RL uke community so I'll have someone to play with.

I'm still quite new to this and is still practicing on a cheap Mahalo:) (Well, two cheap Mahalos and a rotten Morgan to be honest:p ) When I get better I'm getting a Fluke. (I may already have caught the dreaded UAS:rolleyes: )

Hi im Lauren. I live in New Jersey. Ive had this good old tourist uke for almost 8 years now and it has just been sleeping away in my closet since this Jan. when i picked it up and started playing it. Im not a stranger in music. I was a good old band geek in highschool but now since my college doesnt offer band, i've stuck with my guitar (which ive been playin for 8 years) and my uke which i've been playing for 6 months. I am extremely excited to learn and i can't wait to buy a legit uke and learn some more. I love this site! =)

Aloha, I'm chizniky and I'm a ukeaholic. I've been playing uke for nine months and I live currently in Spain, where there are no other ukulele players. boo hoo

I am the proud owner of two Kanile'as, one of which I picked up on my visit to Hawaii, (I am a resident of da Big Island), the other I bought after touring their shop in Kaneohe; and also one curly mango Kala, which was my first uke. I have two other junky ones that aren't even worth mentioning. Since I have nobody to jam/play with, I've resorted to jam sessions on Skype with my dad, or anyone I can scrounge up.

Thanks to Aldrine, Aaron, and Rayan for conjuring up this great site to teach us and share the wealth of uke knowledge Mahaloz guys!

Yes lute are expensive instruments as there is no industrial factories (except some EMS cheap lutes made in Pakistan or somewhere else in Asia)
All other lutes are luthiers's handmade production...
Thanks for the welcome ;-)

I know... and there is no one who makes Lutes in Norway that I know of either, so it would also be some shipping costs

Hello to everyone at UU. I am James from Michigan. I have been playing uke for a few years and am a bit of a hack, but I never let that stop me. I currently play a Fluke, but will be getting a Pono spruce top tenor in a few short days. Any other Michiganders out there?

I've been hanging around for a few months, asking a question here and there and making the occasional comment. I might as well say who I am.

I played violin as a kid, studied flute for a few years in my 20s and took up music with a vengeance when I retired 4 years ago - first clarinet lessons, now sax lessons. I'm playing alto in a local community band.

I began banjo last fall and uke last March. I consider myself a beginner at the uke and am chronicling my learning on my blog: Lazy River Uke (http://lazyriveruke.blogspot.com/).

Hi, i'm Blacksmith, I used to attempt to play the guitar but stopped about ten years ago, a few weeks ago a friend of mine gave me a go on his ukelele and something felt right about it, so i've bought myself a cheapish tenor and the same friend recommended joining Ukulele underground and here I am.

My name is Simon, and I play the ukulele. It's been 20 minutes since I last strummed and fingerpicked my way to oblivion.

Up here in arctic Norway, the ukulele is still a novelty, and I'd like to do something about it. I teach music (among other things), and I get paid for subverting the youth of this country :shaka:, so perhaps there is a pilot project in the works. Who knows?

Aloha... I am Bob C. from Maryland who fell in love with the ukulele on my first visit to Hawaii back in 2003. My first uke was an Applause electric tenor I bought on eBay, then I purchased a used Fluke mango a few months later for true acoustic sounds. On my second trip to Hawaii (in 2005), I made several trips between Mele Music and Bounty Music on Maui, before deciding to buy a Kamaka 8-string. I really wanted a Hawaiian uke made of koa. Since then, I've acquired another Fluke (koa top, rosewood board and PU) and a Kiwaya Tele-uke.

I love the contemporary sounds of Koa'Uka and Kapena. Kelly Boy and West Mulivai are pretty hot uke players... I dig the Hula Monsters, a local band, and I also enjoy Troy Fernandez, Ernie Cruz and Herb Ohta. As an aside, I am a guitar/mandolin/dulcimer player and I am a published and recorded songwriter, and a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) and Songwriters Association of Washington (SAW). It's tres cool to find a site for uke players. Mahalo nui loa!

Hey there, all you fine ukers!

How did a 35 yo man with no prior music experience end up here? Blame the wife.

We homeschool our 2 kids and LonnaB decided they needed music instruction on the cheap. So she asked a guitar player friend of ours for advice and he said to learn the ukulele - that'd it'd be easy to teach the kids because the frets are close together and the strings are easier to press down than on a guitar.

LonnaB was off and running. She bought a uke at a local music shop. A few months in, she bought a real uke (Kala tenor) from MGM. About a year after that she picked up a Fluke and then for Christmas she bought our daughter a Kala pineapple. She was finding tabs, learning songs, watching instructional vids, fighting a losing battle with UAS, etc.

Me, I was like, *shrug*. At least ukes aren't too loud and don't take up too much space. And LonnaB was getting good, so it was no real bother to listen as she practiced.

BUT THEN we drove off to see Jake Shimabukuro in Chicago. And it blew my mind. You can read our review here if you like: http://ukulelehunt.com/index.php?s=jake+concert+review

I was starting to warm up to the idea of ukuleles. A year later I agreed to come along to the Ukulele World Congress. And the light clicked on. Seeing all those great talents having so much fun playing and being together was a real inspiration.

A few days ago I posted my first video, so I am now officially a uker. A rank, amateur, no technique having, no rhythm having, only 3 chords knowing uker, but a uker nonetheless.

My name's Shawn, I'm from Indianapolis, and I've been bitten by the uke bug.

Hey, my name is Jackie, and I live in L.A. I was introduced to the ukulele last year on a commercial shoot. One of the actors brought a couple of ukes, and he sat on the steps of his trailer, belting out Beatles songs, and offering to teach anyone who was interested. He was really good, and he made it look like so much fun.

That really piqued my interest in the uke. I finally purchased at Makai from Elderly Instruments about a month ago. I've been able to learn a lot from watching YouTube and of course from all of the Uke Minutes/Lessons posted on this this site.

Thank you, Aldrine and Rayan and Aaron (and all the behind-the-scenes folks!), for producing such wonderful teaching videos. You guys take the time and effort to do a great job, and it shows. You are making the internets a wonderful place to be. I wish you all the best!

I've played the guitar for a couple of years now, and I discovered the ukulele through YouTube-videos. Afer playing on a cheap soprano in my local music store (it's a miracle they had one out here in Belgium) I was hooked.
I immediately bought it and I've never had so much fun playing an instrument.
It's been a month now, and I haven't touched my guitar since. :D

Hi Everyone,

I'm Adam. I stumbled across some ukulele videos on youtube and then found this place and now I have developed a mini obsession. I hadn't realised that it is such a fun and versatile instrument.

I love some of the videos that you guys and gals have made. They are incredible and have inspired me to take it up.

I've been playing guitar for a little while and can't wait to get started on the uke.

I was going to rush into buying a fairly cheap one this weekend but realise that this may be a false economy and will wait a week or two and buy something with a solid wood top or preferably solid body.

I'll warn you in advance if i record a video for youtube my singing will be so bad that all of the cats within a ten mile radius will be weeping into their curdled milk! But hey ho that's part of the fun right?

I won't waffle any more

Cheers

Adam

Might as well stop lurking and introduce myself!

I'm John, or, as most people know me on the web, Corgan Dane. I'm from Springfield, Missouri, and I work in development for nonprofits. I'm 29 until November, and I've been married for 7 years now.

I bought a Harmony uke for $3 from Goodwill on a whim over a year ago, but never really tried playing it until about 4 months or so ago. I haven't been able to put it down since. I now have the Harmony soprano, a Kohala soprano, and the new musical love of my life, a Kala concert.

I play with a very thin pick because I can't get the hang of finger strumming, and I'm still just playing chords. I learn a little every day, though, and I've picked up some good insights while I lurked this board.

Anyway, that's me. I'm glad t' meetcha. :D

This is my first post just to say hi. I live on south east coast of Cornwall (UK) and started playing a blue Mahalo u30 soprano last year. I have just bought my self a beautiful new Kala Acaia concert uke :D from Sheoak in Falmouth (good shop, nice owners).
I know you already know this but what a difference in sound. I had restrung my Mahalo with Aquilla and it sounded much better, but wow. I love my new uke.
Any other Cornish Uke players out there want to meet up? I'm up for taking lessons too.
Oh by the way - I'm a bit of an oldie at 42 and not particulary musical.

Hi Iím Rob and Iím a ukaholic. :D

Location: So Cal
Playing ukulele since: 528 hours ... give or take

I know itís an old story but I picked up my first uke on a trip to Maui. I played the piano growing up but only cos my parents made me. Generally artistically inclined but never got into musical instruments. Just out of impulse, decided to buy a ukulele in Lahaina. Went back the next day to trade it in for a better one. Got back to mainland, broke it by accident, and went immediately to go buy an even better one Ė a Cordoba concert uke. Havenít broken this one yet and having a blast playing it. Worth strings should be here tomorrow.

Oh and I surf a lot and run Tribal Surf (http://www.tribalsurf.net/). :D

Hello, I'm B. I've had an interest in ukuleles ever since I found them. I do not have any ukuleles yet, but I have been doing my research and may soon buy one. I do have a guitar that I play frequently, and although I'm aware that the strings have a different feel, I can play a few chords. So that's my ukulele life for you. :)

Other than ukuleles, I love crocheting, singing, playing guitar and piano, and reading. I live near Cincinnati, and although the nearest ukulele hotspot seems to be in Nashville, Indiana, I'll do my best to go with what I have.

That's about all for now!

Hi! I'm Jonathon and i have been interested in the ukulele since um, a few months ago! I don't even know what got me interested, all i know is that i love the instrument's sweet sweet sound.
I played quite a few musical instruments in highschool, but that was 10 years ago and i never played a stringed instrument.
I picked up a pretty little mahogany Pono concert uke at the Denver Folklore Center in Denver, CO. If anyone here is in the Denver area, i can't recommend them enough! They're super nice. They told me to try out any instrument i wanted, and when i explained that i couldn't play, the man there (John i think?) gave me a demonstration of several ukuleles.
i've only been playing for 3 weeks, so i'm reeeally awful, but i'm determined to get better! Zooey Deschanel will notice me one day!

Seeso is twisting my arm and forcing me to make my presence known.

My name is Kaileigh (Kail for short, if you prefer). I'm 20, from a small town in Massachusetts, and I play a Lanikai Concert something or other that I got back in May. I borrowed a friend's ukulele for about a month before I bought my own.

And. Yeah. That's it. (: Hi.

I'm Jeremy. I'm 24 and live in Olympia, WA. I don't play ukulele, but I do play cavaquinho... Good luck finding any cavaquinho forums, even in Portuguese :)! I hope you all accept me as a brother in arms, lol. I found UU when I ran out of cavaquinho stuff to read while I was waiting for my cavaco to arrive in the mail and got hooked. There will be a uke in my future when I feel comfortable with where I am playing cavaquinho though!

I just looked up what a cavaquinho is. Seems pretty awesome :D, you play the Uke's 4-stringed cousin.

Hope you find some use to these forums until you get your Uke.

Hello everybody, my name is Matt! I've been playing about a month and a half, and I sound like it. I've been putting in at least an hour a day, so I'm perhaps better than I think, but basically I'm still just strumming along with the words (strumming pattern, what's that?). I'm sure all that will come eventually, if I persevere, and as I'm really enjoying myself, I think I will. After buying my first uke online from MGM, I discovered I lived near Elderly Instruments, in Lansing, and have bought a second one since (both Ohanas). Had never heard of UAS before coming here, but apparently one doesn't have to know about it to be stricken by it. This place looks like a great resource, and I'm glad I found it. I do have one question--I keep hearing of this UU store, but don't see any links to it. Anybody, anybody?
Thanks,
Matt Clara

Hello, Guys. My name is Zachary Vinson! I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and I'm 15 years young. I've been actively involved in music for a number of years. I recently picked up an ukulele and I was instantly hooked. I also play all brass instruments, keyboard, guitar, bass and didgeridoo. I am eager to get started in the world of ukulele and I can't wait to meet you all. Thanks!

Hi from Downunder.

I'm Rob from Brisbane (Bethania) Qld Australia I'm 28. Went to Fuji August last year and heard the locals playing on the ukulele and loved the sound. Then that Christmas my cousin brought one out and nailed some top 40 song and I went and bought one the next week. I suck, I used to play the mandolin when I was young, so I think the small instruments have me hooked. As much as I suck I love it. I think my $25AUD Mahalo is holding me back, my wife thinks it's me......

Welcome Rob! You'll find you're definitely not the only aussie around and there's a lot of kiwis too. My advice about the uke is that you probably should drop a little more money on a nicer one or atleast try some better ones out and see if you like the difference
