i start class at 9am-9.50(m-f), then i have a break from 10-11, class at 11-11.50(m-f), class at 12.30-1.45(t & th)

so basically, 10-11 and 11.50-12.20 is the only time to chill during school unless you want to chill after class too. but that depends on you schedule

JosephBautista

Have any of you gone to any of the meetings for the Berkeley Ukulele Club at DaSilva's shop? They meet twice a month, the 2nd and 4th wednesday nights. I haven't gone myself yet because of work but I definitely want to try to make it one of these days.
Check out http://www.ukemaker.com/ukeclub/ for more info.
I'm based out of Berkeley and would be down to jam sometime. I can get together a practice space if needed.

lol. fair nuf... dat school is def too much of a kik it school tho. im older an wiser (psshh) an really, the only person i talk to now is my boy that i jam wid on occasion.

mwalimu -- hey, i appreciate the heads up! i dont mind an age gap. im sure u guys would give me some good pointers, and thats all that really matters.

i used to work in american canyon (sbux) and a customer saw me jammin out front one day. he told me of some uke group based in napa and how he didnt want to check it out cuz he's "had nothin but trouble wid the napa white folk." he showed me the article featuring said group in one of those local magazine/monthly papers.

needless to say, i'd be more than happy to come along. feel free to send me a pm and let me know so we could coordinate.

you can find me workin at the sbux on springs road every otha week or so. come by, i make a killer cappucino =) you'll kno if im workin, cuz i generally keep my uke on the counter to play to my heart's content

i've been to the kaleo cafe uke meeting a few times. it's more of a "sing-along" than lessons. a beginner could get really lost and left out as nothing is taught. if you want to learn you'll need to arrange for a private lesson with the instructor. but if you know basic chords and love singing hawaiian songs, then it's pretty fun. usually about 10-15 people show up. the hours have changed to 7:00-9:00 with a $5 "donation".

russ_buss
05-12-2008, 12:56 PM

no prob. i know a lot of folks who were curious about kaleo cafe and were a bit hesitant about attending so hopefully i cleared some things up and people now know what to expect. it is a lot of fun to sing and play at kaleo. it seems uke players in the city have very limited options when it comes to gatherings so i'm glad you guys are putting one together. unfortunately because of family obligations, i won't be able to attend the next one. too bad i checked the forum after the your first meeting. hopefully you'll do another (and maybe closer to SF:D)

russ_buss
05-12-2008, 01:14 PM
cool. i might check out the kaleo class sometime if i'm not busy power-lounging on a monday night. perhaps we can get a little mini-meet in SF sometime. i know there is at least of handful of UU members in the city and there are plenty of spots to meet. (i.e. gg park, ocean beach, jtown, stern grove, alamo square, the list goes on...)

ugukfatao21
05-12-2008, 09:42 PM
a mini-meet in SF sounds good to me. weekends are really tough for me to get out so if folks want to gather during a weekday, i'm game. but forget stern grove....don't want to get smashed by a falling tree.

jjsdad
05-14-2008, 05:43 PM
Yea, that was really sad what happened at Stern Grove. How about meeting at Lake Merced? It's usually nice and quiet in the early evenings. Lots of parking too.

Maybe some day I'll check out Kaleo Cafe. Where is it again and what day?

You mean "strumming" with us right? ;) That was actually a pretty good practice for following along to songs that I've never heard before. ok... I admit that I did know a few of them, but somehow they sounded a bit different. I don't think I've heard White Sandy Beach quite like that. :D It does give you some good ear practice to keep up, though.

Anyway, I kind of have mixed feelings on a big group and also on the selection of unfamiliar songs. Perhaps I can check out their songbook more carefullly next time.

But, it was fun. BTW, is it just alden, russ_buss, ugukfatao21, and myself on UU who actually live *in* SF?

it really was good practice to play along with songs i've never heard. and i got prematurely excited when the teacher announced we'd be playing White Sandy Beach just to be led into an unfamiliar arrangement of it. haha. the rest of the songs were like "simple chord quick change boot camp". definitely got the blood flowing!

as for the atmosphere, it felt a little weird being a first timer there, i think mostly because their club regulars were cramming for a performance on sunday. hopefully, they don't always blow through 20 songs in 2 hours. that was a marathon session of unfamiliarity and i felt exhausted afterwards.

thanks for sharing your songbook with us ugukfatao! nice to know another neighbor!:)

it really was good practice to play along with songs i've never heard. and i got prematurely excited when the teacher announced we'd be playing White Sandy Beach just to be led into an unfamiliar arrangement of it. haha. the rest of the songs were like "simple chord quick change boot camp". definitely got the blood flowing!

as for the atmosphere, it felt a little weird being a first timer there, i think mostly because their club regulars were cramming for a performance on sunday. hopefully, they don't always blow through 20 songs in 2 hours. that was a marathon session of unfamiliarity and i felt exhausted afterwards.

thanks for sharing your songbook with us ugukfatao! nice to know another neighbor!:)

my fingers tips were screaming after awhile...or was that Alden and his "take me back" during Molokai Slide? monday nites at kaleo is always fun but having you guys around made it even better. it was great to finally meet you guys and add a face to the screen names. russ, you were right, your head IS big. actually, i couldn't see your head cause your head blocked out all the light. just kidding....couldn't resist.:D i had the same feelings about being a first timer but the club really makes you feel comfortable quickly. and yes, they usually do blow thru that many songs. and what sucks is that they chose songs with the smallest fonts....imagine 4 guys straining to see chords on one song book. hope you guys do it again!

greetings,
i just join this group. but i recognize you dudes as the ones who showed up at the kaleo cafe on june 2nd. didn't get a chance to introduce myself or come by and chat. but it is interesting to put together a connection from reality to virtual space.
anyways, i have been a regular at the kaleo for about 16 months. you guys did come on a night that was hectic and focused. i sure hope you guys can come back and become part of the scene, there are other times and places that members of the group get together and interact. we tend to be older, probably closer to your parents age, than your age group but welcome anybody that wants to play or simply sing. look forward to meeting up at the kaleo or any of your other bay area gatherings.

yay, now i can officially say i'm a bay area uke-r!

It seems the ukulele is very popular around here. I was at the ka leo cafe earlier this week and a bunch of people came in and started playing - is this the uke night you guys are referring to? how does it work, is it kind of a show and with an ukulele and jam thing? haha I wonder if I saw people from this forum.

I also saw a couple of people walking around 9th and Judah (where I'll be living as of the 24th!) with ukuleles. It was cool.

hello bsting, welcome to foggy ass san francisco! a small group of us were there a few weeks ago on a monday night. they have a ukulele class every monday night. 9th/judah is a pretty sweet area. make sure to check out Art's Cafe for breakfast(9th/irving). they have great breakfast diner type food and some korean dishes too. random!

hope to see you at the next local jam. cheers!:)

Doccam, nice to virtually meet you! I was one of the dudes that showed up at Kaleo Cafe on June 2. I might be able to come by sometime, but I don't think I can make it on a regular basis on week nights. Also, my parents are in their mid 70's so I think the folks at Kaleo are more closer to my age. :D
Hope to see you at the next Bay Area get together whenever that may be...

hey guys,

I was planning on going to Kaleo tonight if anyone wants to say hi. I saw one of the regulars over the weekend and he was giving me a hard time for not showing as much as I used to - so I figured I better go :)

Sorry, couldn't make it either. My throat is kind of bothering me today and I don't think I could last singing. I might possibly make it next monday, but I would play it by ear...

Thanks again for the ride [g]. My first Kaleo night was a lot of fun.

Although it's like 30 degrees out there in the Sunset tonight. Definitely not "feeling" Hawaiian. haha.
