A while back I saw an all spruce black bear concert uke, which I found to be curious. I've never seen or heard of an all spruce uke--always thought that spruce was too soft to use for anything but the top. Does anyone have any experience with an all spruce uke or own one? Would a uke like this be more likely to damage or deteriorate over time? Just curious.

Some years ago I made an all spruce bodied soprano uke. None of the wood was quarter-sawn (try bending quarter-sawn spruce!). It was very light, but adequately strong, and had a pleasing tone. I gave it to a friend, who passed it to her son, and it is still in regular use, after about thirteen years.

Not a robust instrument, but with care it is OK.

Ukantor.
