I can only find these awesome Spongebob pineapples sold online by vendors in the UK. Does anyone here know of a US vendor that carries these.
Longtime pineapple & Spongebob fan here. :D

That is reeeeeallllly cool! I haven't ever seen one like that. Though even with shipping, it's not insanely priced on ebay from the UK... But, not in the US. =/

I hope that someday I can find a Hello Kitty ukulele (http://www.kittyhell.com/2008/07/07/hello-kitty-ukulele/).

Uk site but they ship to the US. They use DHL shipping and the price might not be as bad as you assume seeing as this item is pretty light.
They suggest that you put the item in your basket and start the buying process so you can see what the shipping price is. You can always change your mind.

I went ahead and put one in a cart and went through the checkout (but didn't buy). Converted to US dollars it comes to $98.38, including shipping to Michigan.

There was one place in the UK that had pretty reasonable shipping to the U.S., but I'll be darned if I can find it now. I do remember that it was in the first few pages of search results for "sponge bob pineapple ukulele" on Google.

Wowsers, that seems very high. It would be cheaper by royal mail. lol
Probably be better to compare prices on eBay then and see if anyone has a decent rate.

I love it.

I would totally rock that pineapple! and maybe get some respect for once from the younger gens when I pull out my "little guitar"

heck, while I don't think my ego would let me take it out in public, I think a small part of me wouldn't mind rocking that Hello kitty one either. My daughter would love it! She'd like both. they look pretty nice. Screwed down plastic bridge, and painted... and possibly fractional sized... but still looks playable. Wait, is that a rosewood fretboard on the Hello Kitty? ;)

ugh. this thread is dangerous... it made me order one.

i'm excited.

this youtube vid goes thru a bunch of spongebob branded instruments including the standard soprano uke, flying V uke, and pineapple uke...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYMstnOg0wk

no sound sample for the pineapple uke tho.
I am sorta toying with the idea of getting the spongebob half-size guitar and switching out the nut and bridge and making a rocking six string uke... classic headstock for the win!

edit: for Sponge Bob purchase update.
I also got the Toys R Us one to hold me over while I wait for the Pineapple... and it sucks mightily. It was $27... Dirt cheap! but still not worth it. I'm gonna return it. Too many issues. they've updated it with geared tuners... although they are the suckiest geared tuners ever. Intonation problems worsen as you head up the neck... must be that bridge placement problem. and neck too skinny. and all graphics are vinyl stickers... which kinda acts as a pick guard around the sound hole... although the uke isn't nice enough to guard.

and uke5417's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hsZzFxzK-s
Spongebob 'ukuleles had their bridge/saddle placed way lower than pictured on website:
http://trus.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pTRU1-4866678reg.jpg
Should be above his necktie like in picture above not on it as seen in both video reviews.
Hopefully mine arrives with decent inntonation though I'm not expecting miracles. ;)
I'm guessing the "peanut" above is American contract made, and the pineapple a British contract made for UK market and hoping the UK has higher quality demands than the US.

I think it's just those crappy Toys-R-Us/First Act ones... I just bought one. and as I mentioned in my post edit in an earlier post. It sucks badly! like a $5 whore.

It has been slightly redesigned. nothing major. they use the crappyest geared tuners ever now. and the graphics are vinyl stickers (which they may have been before too).
you would think that with a completely molded fret board/frets that they could actually get it perfect... but nope... bridge is too far away. and as I mentioned the graphics are stickers and there is a cut out in the shirt/tie/pants sticker to make room for the bridge, suggesting that that is where the bridge was designed to go... so you can't really move the bridge closer. you have to do the extra bridge thing like in the video. the only other way I can think of fixing it is to unscrew the fretboard (which you can) and move it closer to the bridge and rescrew it in... which I would do if i were not returning it. moving the whole fret boart is possible because it's all one piece. no traditional nut here, it uses a zero fret and channels to handle that end. overall it's junk.

the SB Pineapple looks nothing like the ToysRUs piece of junk. and I hope for our sakes it isn't. (only2 left :) so far you and I are the only takers for that particular listing)

Ahnko Honu

First impressions the UK pineapple with a saddle in bridge, rosewood fretboard, and geared tuners looks much better than the American peanut Spongebob. UK one also comes with a gig bag at least and tuner.
I thought you just ordered the el cheapo US one, good to hear you got the same "quality" UK pineapple one as me. :D

I just returned the horrible ToysRUs SB soprano. Even with shipping, the UK SB Pineapple is only US$20 or so more. And it looks soooooo much better. I realize that $20 is a major amount compared to the whole, but if its the difference between what I had and even just a slighty playable instrument, it is still totally worth it. I can't wait to get it... it will be my first pineapple! HALAKAHIKI!!! I hope I'm not setting myself up for disappointment.

yep, those are pics of mine... just got it today.

While it is many times better than the ToysRUs one... it did not sound very good.

However, after a little TLC, it is a much better instrument.

I also installed a set Aquila strings. The strings that come with the instrument are not very good as would be expected. they use only two string gauges and as such when tuned the A string has more tension than the G and the E has more than the C... maybe not that big of a deal, but it was enough to bother me. Aquillas seem to be a good choice for stings. I think the typical brightness of the Aquila strings is toned down a bit by warmer nature of the pineapple shape... actually sounds pretty good... and while I'd like to say that I thought about it a lot before choosing the strings, I didn't... they were just the strings I had available.

While I had the strings off, I took the opportunity to pop off the nut and file it down a bit... it was too high (I may have gone a little overboard tho... now it might be a little too low... but I'll revisit the nut issue later). I ripped a litle bit of the sticker off while ripping off the nut. but it's not too noticeable. Had to do the same with the saddle... too high. also, the saddle may have come from the parts bin for a larger instrument. mine was obviously shortened to the current length... not a big deal. just aesthetics, but since I had is out to file down the height a little anyway, I also smoothed off the rough side.

I think the best thing for it was the little bit of fret work I did. while I had the strings and nut off, I took a long straight file and carefully leveled off all the frets to be level and even with each other. Best thing ever! the weird intonation issues and some buzzing magically disappeared! it's still not perfect, but it was much worse before. now it's playable.

It is amazing what new strings and a little fret work can do... now I see why MusicGuyMic always insists on doing it to his ukes before sending out.

after restringing it, it is a markedly better instrument. I would actually consider taking it around as my new travel Uke. It is thinner than an average pineapple so it might travel better. the bag it came with wouldn't give it much protection tho... getting something better might be wise. It is definitely cooler looking IMHO than my current travel uKe (Kala Soprano Travel Uke). I has a nice fairly rich sound... and it's pretty loud (although not as loud as the Kala).

Overall, a good purchase... although I have to admit when I first tried it out with the original strings and without any modifications, I was a little disappointed with the sound. but like I said, it is much improved now.

The original strings were clear and that helped to visually minimize their impact on the Sponge Bob graphics on the soundboard. Although I like the Aquilas, I might consider using some Worth Clears to get that transparency back.

Ahnko Honu

Mahalo Jin, I have a set of Worth clears also that I may try first just for the artful reason stated. I'll razor cut the decal first if I have to remove the nut.
Hows the finish in general? Wonder how much longer mine will take to get here.

I don't think I am going to go to the Worth Clears even tho I found some I could use... I've grown to like the sound of the Aquilas on the SBpineapple... and too many string changes can get pricey... so I'll wait till I really need to.

cuting with a razor is a good idea... I wish i thought of it. :(
oh well, my little decal blemish in not that noticeable. I was caught off guard. I didn't expect the decal to come off so easily.

the finish is okay for a toy. it's pretty much just painted with a decent coat of yellow paint and then the decals are added. the wood underneath the paint is on the soft side so it's pretty easy to dent... i've got a few little dents in mine already.

good luck with the waiting-on-you uke part...that's probably not fun... but you'll have it soon enough.

After almost 2 months after purchase and no delivery of my Spongebob 'ukulele I received a full refund from the seller. I give credit to the seller but wish I had this 'ukulele instead of my money back. Won't ordering from the UK anymore. I've sent gifts to UK friends and surprised they get it in a week. I've always had better luck sending to than receiving from foreign countries. I think US Postal service still the best in the world. Seller didn't insure package stating it cost more to insure than the 'ukulele cost which didn't sound right. His gamble, but happy it wasn't a total loss at least. :(

Well, I should update my initial review...

first let me correct something I think I mentioned from my initial impressions... that being the part where I thought the SB pineapple was thinner than other pineapple ukes... it's not. Comparing it to another pineapple side by side, it's not appreciably different in any dimension. I think the busy graphics on the soundboard and the relatively smooth featureless yellow sides were playing tricks on my eyes. (I often tell a similar story to the ladies... "yeah, I'm Asian, but it only looks smaller because the relatively smooth featureless yellow sides is playing tricks with your eyes... just try playing it a little... and take look at that fine nut! real bone!").

hearing the SB pineapple next to another pineapple (granted of much better quality), is where the biggest difference is.

on it's own, the SB pineapple is fine.

Because of its fun nature and relative low price, I take it everywhere... and as an everyday travel uke/workhorse/strumming companion/convo starter it is great! also, having added an active pickup it's great when you want to "plug in" and have an impromptu gig somewhere... not that that has happened to me... but if it does, I'm ready!

Next to a better/more pricey pineapple with same strings, it's pretty obvious tho... it just doesn't sound as nice... not as warm, less sustain, less precise, feels clunky and heavy... granted a lot of the short falls can be fixed and/or accommodated, so it is not hopelessly mired in mediocrity.

I tried a few blind tests with other people and other ukes too... and the SB pineapple almost always found itself at the bottom for sound quality. Not "bad"per se, just not as good in comparison.

The solution is to plug into an amp, turn up the reverb, and uke out!

All in all, at less than $100 shipped from the UK, I would buy again... certainly over that piece-of-poop toys-r-us SB uke. In fact, I've been trying to buy again... to replace my current well/over-loved, dinged and scratched SB pineapple. But they are all back ordered and they don't expect to get any more until well after the new year. Oh well, I hope mine can hold out till then.
