Hey guys,

Well here it is. Post 1000! Now that I am officially a PW I figured a contest is in order.

I was very excited to enter this contest then I saw Jugging Criteria "c" :(...

Don't be turned off by that!

The first two are the most important. To win this you need at least a bit of talent and I am sure everyone does.

Let me put it in a different perspective.

What if two people made videos of the same song. Both are very enthusiastic and very original and creative. The difference was that one of them could switch between their chords without stopping and the other one had to interrupt the flow of the song to change chords.

That is when C would kick in.

ANYBODY can win this contest, just do your best! I am going to change C to Effort because I think that is what I originally meant. ;)

OK here is my entry. I was in the Paris riots during the the french student
rebellion in the 60's when this came out. I ran away.

Recorded in Garageband. Details of tracks layed down in the video.

Someone had to get the show on the road.

3) YOU MUST play a Beatles song!

Re: 3

Can it be a George Harrison solo song? Just curious how loose you want to be defining "Beatles." "Yesterday" could arguably be a Paul solo song, since it's just him and his Epiphone (Yet it still has Lennon's name on it. Go figure.).

10-25-2009, 09:57 AM
I would assume as long as it is released under the name "Beatles" on a Beatles album, it would be considered Beatles.

I would assume as long as it is released under the name "Beatles" on a Beatles album, it would be considered Beatles.

I was wondering, also.... By "Beatles song", does it mean just released on a Beatles album? Or written by the Beatles? They recorded a lot of cover songs, early on....

Clarification, TJF?

^^^^

This is correct.

Any song that the Beatles have done on ANY album that was released under the band name, "The Beatles".

I'll clarify that in the op.

Hey FromTheWayside! Thanks! I use a consumer (read cheaper) version of Final Cut Pro. It's fairly old - there are probably some new options. Any multi-track non-linear video software that has re-sizing and positioning capabilities should be able to do the split-screens. Not sure if iMovie can handle it.

A little controversy never hurt any competition did it? Although released by peter and gordon I contend that it is a Beatles song and is widely acepted as such even though it did not appear on any official beatles album. As Evidence i give you... the Beatles songbook.

http://www.iamthebeatles.com/article1411.html

In Fact i found the music for this in my own Beatles songbook

The song is credited as Lennon/McCartney. It was not released on an official beatles album, but...

I think that the ruling concerning what is a Beatles song was intended to exclude any post Beatles work, whereas this is 1964, i also give you this from the pages concerning the above album as proof it was written as a Beatles song

As a rule the Beatles did NOT write songs specifically for other artists to perform, almost all songs were written as potential tracks for The Beatles

Peter Asher, of Peter and Gordon was Jane Ashers brother. Jane was Pauls girlfriend at the time. Paul gave the song to Peter and Gordon. Does this help muddy the waters? I don't think the Beatles ever recorded it but I think Paul did.

What we lack in talent is made up for by our ENTHUSIASM.
And Grandma definitely gets an ‘A’ for EFFORT!

We are singing our own version of "When I'm 64"... and before you go telling me that we sung the lyrics incorrectly… what good is 64 when my Grandma is almost 90? ;)

This isn't really an entry, but I thought I'd share it here anyway because this contest is too cool. It's George Harrison's "Isn't It A Pity" and therefore, technically speaking, not a Beatles song. It was going to be my entry at first, but I did Eleanor Rigby instead to keep with the rules. I just stumbled on it while I was reloading all my YouTube vids that somehow vanished from my channel. Forgive all the noise and the huge timing clam in the second part of the last verse. I never bothered to try and fix it.

Today I recorded "The Inner Light", a song, which was played by George without the other Beatles, but it was published during the Beatles era, I heard it the first time at the Beatles album "Rarities" .
The lyrics are from the Tao Te King, written by Lao Tse. Nobody knows if that person ever existed.
I play my new second-hand Brüko Concert Ukulele, an instrument made in the most parts of native european materials.

Yeah you are right, Mine is in the original key anyway and i was doing it with bass and 2 ukes but, actually i think i have taken some inspiration from the jumping flea and i will try to do a chord/ melody instrumental of it. Never done anything like that before but it has forced me to learn the fretboard better so what the heck....shame tho cos it took me a week to nail that bass part! maybe i will do both, or a montage!

Hey guys,

Well here it is. Post 1000! Now that I am officially a PW I figured a contest is in order.

I have a practically new Bushman Jenny Pineapple that can be yours!

Here are the rules:

1) One video entry per person! Make it count! EDIT: Enter as many times as you'd like to!!

2) YOU MUST use an Ukulele! (duh!)

3) YOU MUST play a Beatles song!

4) At the beginning of your video YOU MUST say, "I am playing the Beatles and want to win a new uke!"

Other than that, GO WILD! In can be an instrumental, a solo uke and vocal performance, with a band, multi-tracked or whatever you want! It can be just like the original or completely revamped. (Anyone picture Something in reggae style? ;) ) Get creative.

JUDGING CRITERIA:

a) Creativity
b) Enthusiasm
c) Effort!

To win this contest you don't have to be a great player as long as you are super creative and super enthusiastic! Anyone has a great shot at winning!

HOW TO SUBMIT ENTRIES!
1) Subscribe to my youtube channel HERE! (http://www.youtube.com/thejumpingflea)
2) Post the link to your entry in this thread
3) Contest ends 01/31/10 at 3:00 PM PST

Prizes:
1st Place: Bushman Jenny Pineapple
2 Runner Ups: The Beatles "1" album from iTunes

Depending on the number of entrants there may be more prizes.

CONTEST VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jA5_dFGDFS8

Here's my second and final entry. I tried to keep it close in vibe to the original psychedelia, both musically and visually. I also made it a bit of a Lennon tribute, as this is one my favorite songs of his, and has his stamp all over it. And out of respect for him, I kept my mouth shut and made it instrumental - no way I can touch that vocal.

No, I had a little help from my friend and bandmate, Greg Paxton, on steel drums and drums.

Anyway... Strawberry Fields Forever:

This is GIRL a song that always reminds me of my crazy first love, originally recorded on the 1965 album Rubber Soul, imo the BEST Beatles album. click the pic to see it.

Dang, it really sucks that you guys put effort into this contest before you saw my video. Pretty worthless on your part.

Okay, I lied. There's dozens of videos in this thread that blow mine out of the water. But hey, I had a good time making it.

EDIT: Shoot, I didn't post it as a reply to the Flea's video. Is there anyway to do that after having already posted it?

I think your videos are great. My videos certainly lack -- all I have is either a flip cam or the built in camera/mic on my MacBook, which both suck butt. Let's just say if ukulele quality, recording quality, or video quality are factors, I'm screwed...haha...

As many as you like apparently, which is great for me cos i have the music to every Beatles song ever written and narrowing it down to 1 would have been impossible, i may just be able to keep it under ten.,

I've seen a lot of the contributions and you people are great, so I don't stand much of a chance. But I had fun giving it a try. Still I'm crossing my fingers :)
Oh, and if you wonder why I speak odd, it's because I'm swedish, and my english could be a lot better. I was planning on recording it last week, but I suffered a severe cold leaving me to the last minute.

It means major seventh.

To make a regular seventh chord, add a 7th to the regular triad (add the note that is exactly 1 whole step below the root chord - so in a C chord you would add a Bb or A# depending on how you look at it). A minor seventh would be 1.5 steps below the root (adding an A to a C chord). A major seventh would be like adding the note that is a half step below the root of the chord to the triad (A C chord would add a B to the triad, or a G would add a Gb to the triad).

Does that make sense?

I didn't post my entries as video responses until yesterday when I noticed the reminder. The rules do say to post entries here, in the thread. Yes, but the deadline was only a few weeks ago. With the number of entries that have come in I don't think it was very unreasonable to have taken as long as I did to judge. I am sorry that it took a few weeks, but no worries now... The results are in.... ;)

You are doing this out of the kindness of your heart! You should have as long as you need to judge properly, especially with this many entries.
