So kids, I've been looking at these contests, and I'll be honest, some are pretty hard.

So I wanted to do something for all of the other beginners out there.

This contest is open to those who have been playing for 6 months or less (I'm currently at 1.5).

I've found that I really enjoy making up strum patterns using the F, C, and G7 chords.

Your challenge is to submit a video of you playing those chords, any order, any pattern, the more improvisation the better. At the beginning of your video, please say "For Brick's beginner contest". I will post a sample video sometime this week.

A few rules:
1. Cannot be a portion of a song already written (be creative)
2. Must be under 1 minute in length, but longer than 20 seconds. However, I won't mind you going over a little bit.
3. No singing, unless you have to.
4. Beginners only!
5. 2 submissions per person
6. Contest ends Dec 1st.

Oh yes, prizes.....hmm
Depending on the number of entrants/submissions
A. Strings of your choice (Aquila's, D'Addarios etc...)
B. Tripping Lily CD (I LOVE this cd)
C. $10 itunes/gift card/cash

The more that enter, the more I'll give away.

Contest is now closed

I've been playing 20mins here and there in the car at lunch time for around a month now, so I guess I should do something....

Reasons to enter

-I've been practicing a very poor I'm Yours since I got a uke, wanted to do something for the Up Yours Deach contest (which brought me to this board), but that finished A YEAR AGO .
-I'm not a great player, but singing?....Phew.....
-I have actually tried playing and singing together, it dont work. I'm the type of guy who can only do one thing at a time - never call me when I'm ironing.........

Things to do

-practise crossing over from G7 to other chords (aw man! Cudda been worse tho, its not B!)
-find a mic for my pc
-find a camera for my pc
-join YT

We shall see.....

the only contest so far that i felt i had even a ghost of a chance on was the ohana legend contest a while back. and i was beaten by a better story.

and after getting my first uke at the end of summer, real life began its encroachment. sadly it spends more time up on the hanger than being played. argh. i vow to spend more time with the uke minutes and lessons on here.

so thanks for this contest. i'll see what i can come up with!

so what qualifies as a beginner other than the amount of time you have been playing ukulele? let's say someone has a huge musical background, and although he/she just started uke, they already understand it more than other people who haven't played anything else before.

is that fair? i dont think there should be a time playing limit because the amount of time you have been playing means nothing if there are people who can learn rather quickly. i thought this contest was for beginners -_- as in just started playing who cant even improvise yet.

inmho i think there should have been some better guidelines. im not entering the contest, i already have more than 6 months under my belt. im just saying its not so fair if you define beginner as 6 months worth of playing.

that's like saying someone who has been working out for 6 months is still a beginner. you get results in 3, and by the 6th month you already know the best exercises and diet plans.

just my 2 cents. actually it seems a lot more than 2 aha

CountryMouse
10-26-2009, 10:18 AM
I tend to agree--some guitar background sure gives one an edge.

I know a little about strumming, which helped me at the very beginning; but no one chunks on the autoharp, that I know of! And the autoharp helped me a bit in knowing what chords go together in what keys...well, heh, the keys of G, C, and F, mostly.

But I never got into ukeing to be a virtuoso and that's never gonna happen. I wanted something to accompany my voice with...and the autoharp is no longer an option for me. To me, the uke seemed like it would be easier than guitar. But this is the first instrument I've had to make chords by myself on. So there's that to think of before the fancy strumming and fingerpicking.

Maybe I just don't have a multi-track mind.

So I won't be entering this contest.

Point taken.
However, I think people are smart enough to know whether they might qualify as a "beginner" or not. If Phil Keaggy had never played the uke before, he would technically qualify to enter. But I think he would know it wouldn't be proper for him to do so.

I'm not necessarily going to pick the "best" video. I'll pick the one(s) I like. The winning video may or may not be very good in terms of skill, but if they put some real effort into it, they could very well be the winner.

If that makes any sense at all.

So I won't be entering this contest.

CountryMouse, who has only been playing ukulele for 2 months

I see what you are saying, however, feel free to enter the contest.

That's awesome, I listened to that a couple of times. I could have that playing on repeat in the background whilst I work. What was the strum pattern you used?

I think this thread is a great idea, I'm not in it to win it, but it's nice to see how other people are doing.
It's also fun to compare mrUKETOBER, who has a guitar background, with someone like me, who has no music background at all. Are there any beginners with musical backgrounds but not with a stringed instrument before?

Come on other beginners, post a video.

wow i cant believe people are slamming me for being able to fingerpick and improvise..i worked very hard on this and put alot into it ! let me make this clear ... my main instrument is drums and ive only been playing guitar for about a year.. and i barely play just every couple of months which i had hardly ever picked it up since ive been ukeing.. i JUST bought an acoustic this week.. only played it a little.. being a quick learner has NOTHING to do with this.. but i dont think anyone has the right to slam anyones performance or musical ability.. having a musical background doesnt mean anything .. i sucked on the uke for a long time.. but i played every single day since i got it except for about 2 weeks. im sorry that i am dedicated to music and something i enjoy but you are making a bad impression of the ukulele community by slamming it.. personally i dont care what you say or think. this is not your contest and the person who is running this contest didnt say anything bad about it. i am within his guidelines he has requested .. i dont expect to win i entered for fun so please get over it

hell i never would have entered if i thought all people were gonna do is complain

dude youre taking this way out of proportion. having a musical understanding does help you a lot, and sure you fit the criteria. i just dont think you should qualify yourself as a beginner.

thats all i have to say. take it or leave it. best of luck to you.

well i am not going to continue in this stupidity... i have sent brick a message asking whether or not he thinks i qualify for his contest.. if he says no then thats that i will withdraw my entry.. its not a big deal.. i was just for fun but on another note.. BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE WHO DOES QUALIFY :D

mrUketober, I don't really think anyone meant to "slam" you. I think a couple of things happened here.

One....you are obviously very musically talented, as demonstrated by your great playing, even as a beginner. This is the exception, rather than the rule. Most beginners are not as accomplished as you obviously are.

Two....yours was the first entry in the contest. This, combined with your skill, had the effect of setting the bar very high for all who would follow. Yours was literally a "tough act to follow".

Try not to take the questions that were raised as personal criticizm. I think folks just felt that they couldn't compete at your level....I know I couldn't. I don't qualify for the contest because I've been playing for 10 months, but there's no way I could see myself submitting an entry against yours solely because there's no way I could compete....you're too much better than I am. Try to take it as a complement to your progress and your talent, rather than a personal slam.

Just my .02 cents....

mrUKETOBER
10-26-2009, 05:29 PM
thanks mailman .. i get where you are coming from .. and i kinda did think that way at first but a couple of the other comments just felt like personal attacks and it didnt sit well with me lol .. i dunno i enter alot of contests just to get shot down so i thought a beginner contest that in my eyes i qualified for would be a better chance.. and some more fun. these contests are lots of fun and are really why i am getting better.. but i think everyone has a chance at winning this .. i personally loved trant and chris's entries better than mine ! they were great :D so i dont want anyone to be discouraged at all :D

I think all the entries have been great and I hope there are more. I was going to enter, but it's been more than 6 months for me. I might enter anyways not because I must win, but because I consider myself a beginner and thought it sounded like a fun thing to do. I don't think I should get upset that someone who has played for a shorter time is getting better faster than me. We all learn at different paces and as long as we keep trying and are having fun that's the main thing. Every now and then the ukulele magic happens for me and I can do something I couldn't do the day before. I know I'm having fun learning and I hope everyone else is. Now bring some magic, I can use it!:)

Uketober I had a question, lol the fingerpicking style was that the In and out picking style Aldrine taught in his earlier videos? Lol your thumb hardly moved so kinda on the fence about it but without the string manipulation it sounded really similar. If it's not :) and you can reproduce that, would you mind telling me? I really like how you picked that improv sounds really good.

if we were able to play other chords at least keep it beginner ish. still a 3 chord progression.. or something

bnicholas26
11-02-2009, 02:50 PM
I'm not a beginner but here's a nice progression i figured out. C, Cadd9, Am, F, Fm (and then back to C again) (4 beats for first 3 chords then 2 beats for f and fm, or mix it up find your own timing) drop me a line tell me how you like it, stay with it don't quit it becomes addictive.

Great job NewMexicoDawg! I may give it a shot myself when I get home from work. There's some stiff competition here and I've only played the uke for about 2 months.
What I like about this contest is that it shows what you can do with just 3 chords.

Hey all,
I'm going to enter I think, as I'd like to try making an ukulele video and this contest gives me a reason to do it :).
I first picked up an ukulele sometime in the last couple of days of May, so I qualify, just! The ukulele isn't my first instrument but it is my first stringed one.

Love the entries so far! It's interesting to see how different players are approaching their new instrument, OK there's not much to be seen from just one video but it's interesting to look at everyone's playing style.

See you again soon once I get hold of a videocamera...

wow, ok, well, I submit the following:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aT-mOt5Aqg

two things you should know--
1) It blows compared to the rest of you all, but after 3 weeks of playing, I thought what the heck, it says beginners only and I am the epitome of beginner..
2) My hatchet is a cheap soprano beater... Santa actually went to a music shop here in denver that specializes in all things folk and picked out a sweet pono that Mrs. Clause will be getting him for christmas. But the current uke has some real charm, you know, if buzzing and ringing is charming.

no less, it was fun to do and my first post ever on youtube. so hoooooha!

I'm sure it has been asked but i am too lazy to read through all of the posts. Is there still a "6 month or less" requirement? I have been playing for much longer than 6 months but I really dont hve any "whole" songs in my repertoire. I would like to enter, since I have never made a video before, but if the 6 month thing still exists, then I wont be able to that. What's up?

I play other instruments but the ukulele is my first string instrument. We had a midsummer love affair and despite my clear lack of smiling in either video, trust me the passion is still as strong as ever :p.

I've focused on improvisation, as requested in the contest description. I hope you enjoy the results!

Thank you very much. It's a good time to say that I have seen several of your videos and am very impressed. Especially the videos with the cigar box ukulele, what a wonderful gift!
Natalia is made by Brüko (http://www.brueko.de/en/index.html), out of maple wood, and is their Soprano No. 4 model.
Sonia is a Mahalo LP-style ukulele, made of cheap and cheerful plastic :).

I haven't had a chance to see what a tenor would feel like for my fingers or for that matter how large the body would be for me--I'm a small person! I hope to see what one is like in a music store maybe in a month or so, if Cat'r decides to go shopping for a tenor.

Ooo, there are Lava Fleas and Flukes! Hmm!

I can't say enough how cool this is! Thanks to Brick for doing this! Had you asked me a month ago if I thought I'd ever post a video of me playing the uke online, I would have laughed....

To everyone that entered: I thoroughly enjoyed watching your videos and seeing the styles. Mr. uke and Sertfide, I watched your videos a ton, I've actually been trying to play them.. :)

C-mouse: My wife watched your video and said, "that sounds so beautiful, why can't your ukulele sound like that?"

My fav was 3nails4holes though, being a quasi-parrothead, I appreciated the nod.

thanks again to brick and everyone that made this so much fun!

I wanted everyone to win, lol

But i'm not that rich.

Most of the vids weren't picked by the player's skill, just so you know.

Whoa. I'm incredibly unworthy, but thanks!

Congratulations to the other winners, and huge thanks to brick for the contest. There's no way that I would have started trying to record playing this soon without it, but now that I've started, I'm gonna keep on. (Is that a threat?)

(BTW, I'm totally adding "award-winning ukulele player" to my resume now.)

Like I said, it wasn't skill based.

This was exactly the result I had hoped for.
Just don't let it get to your head :p

Wow, that's awesome! Thanks for putting on the contest Brick, it was a great idea and fun to see how everyone's doing; I've quickly realised that I have to pull my socks up as the standard is so high.

I particularly liked CountryMouse's plucking in between strums, very cool and created a great sound with so few chords.

I could almost take offence at that. Almost ;)

Ok

So the prize is $10 any way you like it.

$10 itunes gift card (or any gift card)
$10 Amazon mp3 download
$10 via paypal
$10 through snail mail
$10 to your favorite charity
$10 in Christmas cards and postage

So basically, anything that would cost around $10

Your choice :)

I'll send out a PM to the winners.

Thank you! I might've seen that strum in either a Mel Bay book or a Jumpin' Jim book! I learned it really early on! I need to work on more strums. Actually, I need to work on getting my fingers in the right places more accurately and more quickly! LOL!

By "not based on skill" I meant not based on skill alone

I was looking for effort, creativity, and fun!

skill sorta factored in, but as you can see, the best played vids (mruketober and 3nails4holes) didn't win.

Eee, Brick, that's generous! I gotta think on that one a little bit! I am sooo addicted to apps on my iPod Touch--that iTunes gift card would be great! Maybe I could buy Rock Band for the iPod Touch now!

Wow, thanks!

Oh, that's an even better idea! Because someone in my family might get me an iTunes gift card (if they were paying attention to my wish list :D ).

Let me think on it a little more until I get your PM.

Thanks again! Eeeee! I never in a million years thought I'd win!
