I've been playing for nearly two months now, and I'm getting better and I'm proud of that. I've figured out my preferred way to play the dreaded E and a lot of chords seem to come along well with a bit of practice......

except for Gmin:mad:
I don't know what it is about it, my fingers just seem to have a mental block when it comes to that chord. I know it's just down to practice and it will get get better with time, but it gets me every time

Don't let me be alone with this irrational grudge against a pretty pretty chord, what chord does your head in:D

If you can get away with it, E7 in the first position instead of a straight E is always nice.

Personally, I loves me some Gm.

Am7 is the worst. :)

Which finger on the Gm is giving you trouble? pinky?

You use your pinky??...

I play Gm as 0231, and I use index, middle and ring finger. Unless I play it 3231, then I use my pinky, but I never play it that way. Haha.

I second that BLEH. And add any forms of 1342 or 4332. For me, they are those types of chords where they aren't necessarily finger pretzels, but they're hard to remember as a chord and takes me more than a while to place my fingers in the right position.

I agree. I play Gm the same way you do. For me it was an easy one to learn on the uke, as it was a familiar chord shape from my guitar days.

I've never tried that Fmaj7 before. I can do it with four fingers, but find it much easier if I barre the first fret rather than fret an individual string at the first....

Yes, I play it 3231, just because that figure works all the way up the neck. But, 0231 works fine for Gm.

I play Gm 0231 using index, middle, and ring fingers

I think I'm playing it the best way it just always seems to take a second longer for my fingers to be resting on the strings and so messes up the rhythm of whatever I'm playing.

I think it's to do with moving all the fingers at once if none of them are on the same strings as the previous chord,(one of the songs I'm trying it moves to a Gm from an F and the other it moves from a Dm) like i say I think it's just practice, it's just annoying because it seems simple enough

Sometimes a Gm7 (0211) will work in place of a Gm (0231) especially if its a tune with jazzy harmonies... or followed by a C7

I play this 2030. However, I've found that different shapes sound better in some songs than others.

I forget the name of it but it was one AG taught in his Christmas song lessons.

2121

lol can't switch to it fast enough. So I just end up playing it 0101 only for a few up's and downs hardly noticeable.

The G7 - Ab7 etc moveable formation (1323) shapes, as well as the Gm moveable formation shapes (4 string in particular), have been avoided by me. But one day, like the Eb, it will come.

Still just learning, but I did wind up sending my husband a text message on my lunch hour while sitting in my car with instrument:

F7 is a bitch
He assured me it is in guitar too.

You can "get away with it" if the E chord is performing a dominant function. In which case it will most likely be followed by some sort of A chord.

If it's functionally a tonic or subdominant you can often substitute E6 (C#m7)(2424).

Try both; one will probably work.

Yes it is but to bad sometimes those easier chords don't always have the right sound in the song:(

For me it's the E can't get it the 2444 way an 2011 just doesn't always sound right.

Fro the Gm haters try playin A7 to Gm over and over.... that ones a toughie

Oh yeah, I just encountered that chord for the first time last night. A tough one, I had to turn my hand in a strange way to make it work. Gonna take some practice that one...

I have trouble with that stretch every time. Along with 7002 with any speed out and in to open strings.

"sometimes those easier chords don't always have the right sound in the song"

I know what you mean, Freedive, but just for the sake of clarity, the ones in question are not "easier chords" - they are easier ways of playing THE SAME chords. They may sound a little different, all chord inversions do, but it's just the same notes played slightly differently.(Different order, sometimes different octave)

In the case of FMajor7 - whether you play it 2413 or 5500, you are playing exactly the same notes, but in the reverse order. If 5500 doesn't sound quite right to you, try strumming it upwards, instead of down.

Very often an alternative form of the chord will sound better than the "standard" way of playing it. It depends on the other chords around it, what the melody is doing, and the mood of the piece.

2433 C6/Am7 gets me every time. But take that Gm shape 0231 and move it up to frets to 0453 and 99% of the time it works in place of the C6 or Am7.

a good progression seems to help it along....try Oasis - Don't look back in anger. E is placed well.

Try playing the E by barring at the 4th, then pinky on the 7th fret on the A string. Easy to switch to E7 with the middle finger too.

Ukantor.

Yeah, easy if you play it that way...but the resulting sound is different. There's a certain song I play and the 4th chord is Fmaj7 and playing it 5557 or 5500 just sounds awkward when played after the previous chords

If you're wondering, the chords are...
Bbmaj7 - 3210
Am7 - 2433
Gm7 - 0211
Fmaj7 - 2413

Yeah, 2413 is 5500 upside down in terms of sound (AEFC to CFEA) but...strumming down it ends on A instead of C and..yeah

ukantor

ChamorroDT, I agree completely. When I play 5500 I usually strum it upwards, for that very reason.

That is a lovely chord sequence, but myself, I would play the BbMaj7 2211, and the Am7 0453.

Vive la difference!
