I just learned that there's such a tree as the rainbow eucalyptus. It's dazzling, in its many different colors! Has it ever been used in instruments?

From what I can see online, it looks like those colors are restricted to areas of peeling bark (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jungle_mama/3948404440/). The wood itself appears to be less colorful (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=29579392). One page did indicated that the heartwood is red and used for lumber. Here's another example of the wood (http://www.forestnursery.com/pricelist.html#Anchor-EUCALYPTUS-15354).

I couldn't find any mention of it being used as a tonewood, though there was some mention of a "lyptus" hybrid from Brazil.

At one time Fender had a line of (Coronado) Guitars made from wood where the tree roots had been injected with colourful dyes.
