i'm new here. i have recently rediscovered my ukulele after years of it gathering dust thanks to this forum (i got my mahalo u30 as a gift years ago, and the action was so high it was pretty much unplayable.) a video of beejums on youtube brought me to his intonation hack, and i used that as a starting point to lower both the nut and the bridge AND fix the intonation (except for the C string, somehow.) if you want more info on that, let me know...
for now, here's the meat...
so i'm new. and though i played a little bit of guitar years ago when i was younger and moodier, not much of that stayed. i leafed through a few ukulele method books and they're very poor in both method and information contained within (remember, i'm inexperienced, maybe i just stumbled across the wrong bunch...) all this to say it's infinitely cheaper and more informative to learn from websites such as this, and youtube.

i'm sure you all know his ever-growing repertoire of video lessons. for some of you, it might be really easy to see those chords on the screen and strum along, but people like me need a little more time to do the chord changes, and sometimes fall behind. i have to pause, rewind, start again, find my rhythm again... a mess.
so...
HOW TO SLOW DOWN YOUTUBE VIDEOS
you need two programs (and a plugin):
- mozilla firefox ( http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ )
- vlc media player (or a media player capable of playing mp4 (itunes format) at various speeds (important)) ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ )
- video download helper (firefox plugin)
once you have mozilla, run over to the plugins page and install video download helper:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006
it will add a new icon next to your home page icon (three little spheres that are grayed out. they turn bright and colourful when you're on a website with streaming video)
next, run over to your favourite video tutorial. say... Hey Jude ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a38JVchkSmA&feature=related )
you'll notice video download helper's spheres button get colourful. click on it and choose the hq mp4 format from the drop down menu (flv should work as well, i just haven't tried that because my mp3 player plays mp4, so i can also transfer the movies to my mp3 player for offline portability)
it will download the movie file in a directory of your choosing
open in vlc media player. right click on the video screen and select playback - slower. you can slow it down or speed it up as you please.
strum along.... sloooowwwlllyyyy at your own pace.
the fun part is that vlc chops the sound rather than actually stretching the audio, so the sound maintains its frequency - ie: the song will sound the same, but slower, and you will be in tune.
