Hello fellow UU members. I am on the hunt for some good Uke CD's. I know I know I can go buy a Jake CD. I have them all. But what about some classic old school Uke or new artist uke player other than Jake. I want to fatten up my CD collection with a ton of these CDs and I need some help in finding some good ones. What do you all suggest? What are your favorites? Can someone point me in the right direction??

I recently downloaded "Singin' in the Rain: The Best of Cliff Edwards" off Amazon, and am REALLY happy with it.

I really wanna find a good album of Roy Smeck uke stuff, and a good collection of Formby.

As for more contemporary stuff, I've recently downloaded "Ukulele Tragic" by Share and the "Touch of Velvet" EP by Dent May and his Magnificent Ukulele... They're both available free and legal for download on the interweb, and well worth a listen.

how about some herb ohta jr? i personally don't have any of his cd's but i've watched some of the videos that he and daniel ho have performed and i love them.

yeah herb ohta is da bomb. I have a couple of his cd's, and you won't be disappointed. It's mellower than jake's.

Oh-- I also posted an ukulele muxtape... feel free to have a listen and see if you like anything on it...

(And yeah, that last song doesn't have a uke, but I just really liked it...)

Try Kimo Hussey's "Eminent 'Ukulele". He plays very soft and uses a lot of chord harmony stuff. He also used a steel string uke for almost all of the songs. Cool stuff.

Might I suggest Mele.com . . . here's a link to their ukulele CD section. This is all basically Hawaiiana and Contemporary Hawaiian music. BTW, most of the tracks have sound bytes to give you an idea.

I'll second Ka`au Crater Boys, Troy Fernandez is a wizard. Troy also recorded some great ukulele with Palolo.

Ohta San has some nice melodic jazzy music and Herb Jr follows in his footsteps more or less, but Herb Jr plays more Hawaiian tunes. Look for him recording with Keoki Kahumoku and David Kamakahi. David's U Lili `E (from the Ohana CD) is a classic uke tune that he recorded when he was only 17. His dad is the legendary Dennis Kamakahi.

Also check out Brian Tolentino, he's got a great CD called "Ka `Ukulele Lele" and has some nice chops - lots of great ukulele. He plays in Waikiki when he's not on tour.

Moe Keale's "Honi" from his Imagine CD has some nice uke in a different style. Moe played with The Sons of Hawaii so listen to them for some old traditional Hawaiian music and you'll hear the ukes in there, although they aren't featured as much as they are in much of the new music.

That's just some of the Hawaiian stuff. There are many more great players, James Hill, Lyle Ritz, Dan Saywer, Janet Klein, Craig Robertson - hey, you can catch Craig live at the Sky Bar in Somerville!

Cool thanks, a lot to choose from, I cant wait to check it out...thank again....

Check out The Fabulous Heftones. Brian Hefferan is one of the most overlooked ukulele aces in the world.

Brian has a whole page full of tunes you can download (old, public domain tunes) along with the lyrics and uke chords. You can get 'em in either mp3 or ogg vorbis format.

Also you should scope John Kavanagh. He's got a CDBaby page too.

I have his Parlour Music CD and it'll just knock yer socks right off. Buy it. No, I mean it. Stop typing and go buy it!

While you're at it, go have a listen to Patsy Monteleone. He has a MySpace too. Patsy did a couple videos right after Hurricane Katrina that made me cry. I'm not kidding. I sat there blubbering like a baby they were so beautiful.

Last, but certainly not least, if Bosko & Honey don't get you all riled up I think you need to check your pulse, cuz you've probably died and haven't noticed. They have lots of goodies on YouTube as well.
