So I was curious, how do the people on Ukulele Underground pronounce Ukulele, the traditional hawaiian oo-koo-ley-ley, or the Americanized yoo-kuh-ley-lee.

I grew up with the american version so that's what I use.

uck-ya-leel. This way the "ookoolehleh" and "youkalaylee" crowd will get along and hate me together.

Do we HAVE to get into this again? Pronounce it any way you like, but play it and enjoy.

i do a kind of mix between the traditional ookaylaylay and the americanised youkoolaylee kind of comes out ookoolaylee, when in use the pure form, people don't recognise it, so thats why i mix and match

Depends on who I'm talking too.

When I placed that giant order with MGM I corrected my pronunciation from "yoo-koo-lay-lee" to "ook-uk-leh-luh."

He said, "I don't care how you pronounce it. I'll sell it to you either way!"

you-key-lay-lee. ;)

well this was really more of an "im just curious who says what" topic than a "this is how you're supposed to pronounce it" debate

no worries though, i didn't know it was a sore topic here, my bad ha
