Since my girls are with their mother this week, I took the unwanted Chrissie Prezzie (black sparkly Makala Dolphin -- she'll be getting a Lanikai LU21 now) out from under my bed to play around with. Boy does it sound bright!

It has the molded plastic back and sides, and a thin laminated top. I inspected it, to try to discover how it makes the noise it does -- my other laminated uke is much more difficult to coax a sound out of -- and discovered that there is no bracing inside. None at all.

Could this be the secret to the loud, bright Makala sound?

Tiny elves in the ukulele is my theory.

That's definitely it.

I accidentally backed over a Makala Dolphin in my car once. Took me all afternoon to hose the elf guts off the driveway.

The uke was fine. The elves were not.

There's something fishy about those dolphins....

Get it? Something fishy? Oh, never mind....

Dolphins are the masters of sound manipulation and each Makala has Nai'a mana added to it during construction. I believe Makala will also have a concert "Bat" out by next spring with a bat shaped bridge. ;)

The death of a ukulele is never funny. I hope you bought a new one.
The exact thing happened to the uke in my avatar. Uke vs 4Runner... :(

No elves were harmed, though. I don't think they favor the Lehua... I did eventually get a Mainland, and the Lehua is now a cigar box project, so all's well!
