I have a new-to-me (purchased from Provines - thanks man!) "prototype" uke made on Orcas Island, WA. Definitely a first or second attempt uke, but it's going to be my great beater-go-camping uke. The most distinctive feature - the headstock has dog's ears on it. So...its new name: Rover

Hi! (first thread) I looked around the forums and either I didn't search for the right thing, or no one has posted a thread about naming their ukuleles :]

So add to the thread by listing your uke and what ever nickname you have given it! No explanations necessary as to the nickname, but if you would like you can share a bit about it.

My ukes:

I think the name is fitting :shaka:

Lanikai tenor: Pukana la
which is,"sunrise" in hawaiian. Sunrises have always been close to me. If you want to know more just ask haha.

mainland tenor: Anuenue
which is,"rainbow" in hawaiian. I love the color of the mahogany, so I thought it was fitting, as well as the fact that Iz and his famous song have changed my life forever.

Hilo soprano(painted gold): Kula
which is, "gold" in hawaiian for obvious reasons. :p

Johnson Baritone (with lots of stickers): Pipili
Which is "sticky" in hawaiian(i think) also for obvious reasons.

If any of you big islanders find problems with translation please tell me. I want to get it right haha.

I've never named an instrument, either. I just refer to them by the name of the maker or luthier. But since I only have one uke, I guess it'll just be known as "the uke" for now.

My husband collectively refers to my stringed instruments (five guitars, four mandos and the uke) as "those repulsive twangy things of yours". Of course, I know he doesn't mean it. He's actually very supportive of my playing. He's quite happy that my tenor sax has taken up permanent residence in the closet. :)

As far as I know, the reason for instruments having names is so the roadie knows which one you want -- it's easier to call for Micawber than to ask for the 195* blonde Telecaster with five strings in open G.

I don't have a roadie, so my instruments don't have names.

My current Mitchel MU-100 doesn't have a name because I absolutely despise it.

My tenor Uklectic that is in the making is named Mai'a (Hawaiian meaning Banana) after my very special friend Hannah who has inspired and helped me more than anyone/anything in the world.

My soprano Uklectic which I haven't even ordered yet is going to be named Kairi, once again after Hannah/Kairi from Kingdom Hearts I/II... I have a lot of nicknames for her...

I want to name my Mainland tenor. The cedar top looks like the color of honey, and I would like to incorporate a honey connotation to its name. Plus the honey reference also implies hoosierhiver's other vocation.

I love the taste of honey. I love that honey is a term of endearment. I love that my uke is the color of honey. So any fun variations would be cool (honey bee, honeycomb, honey bear, honey jar, etc.)

So, speakers of the Hawaiian language, can you help me out with some suggestions for a name?

My uke's name is Echo Lee Kaywinnet aka Kaylee the Ukulele. It's a combination of Kaywinnet Lee from Firefly and Echo from Dollhouse. I was fixated on the name Echo, because I think it's a kick-ass name for a musical instrument, but Kaylee the Ukulele had a fabulous ring to it.

I'm either going to name the one I'm getting for Christmas Penny (after the main character of my novel), Ruby (after a minor character in my novel), or Echo, since I never call Kaylee Echo. (Or perhaps Echo Penelope, or Echo, for short).

At some point in my life I will name either a dog or a ukulele "Irony."

I just got my ukulele a few days ago for Christmas. Though I am from the Kentucky and have never (sadly) been to Hawaii, I wanted to give her a Hawaiian name. I gave her a name which means "house of the sun" or "house of the rising sun", and is also the name of a dormant volcano in Hawaii. I thought that both were very fitting.

Her name is Haleakala.

Just an FYI no "rising" in Hale-a-ka-la, and emphasis on last syllable "La" the sun god (same as "Ra" in rest of Polynesia, and strangely enough Egypt).

I just got mine 2 days ago and have been thinking and thinking of a name for mine. Finally I hit one name and it stuck. I got it now:

York

It is the county I grew up in and I always thought it would be a cool name to name one of my kids, but my husband vetoed it... so if I can not name a kid that I might as well name my Uke that... right? :D

Me too - I tend to call mine by the wood, the model or the maker.

I do have two with names though. One came with a name so I've kept it: I have an all spruce Black Bear uke called "Blonde Bear". My partner calls it the "Spruce Goose" though which I'm rather partial to. I also have a MP pineapple that has become "The Pineapple".

The others are called "the Strad", the Koaloha, the tenor, the Larrivee, and the Pohaku. I have a couple on the way and they will be called "the Bass" and the "cat uke". Someday I hope to have "the banjo" too.

I don't name cars either. Mine are have been "the Honda", "the pickup", "the Toyota" (aka "the Hybrid" if I'm feelin fancy) and "the Mazda".

My practice uke, a KA-S, is called Black Mamba, in reference to "Kill Bill", for the ill treatment I give it (I am a real beginner to uke and to music playing)

I also have a KA-FMC called Bliss, for when I can finally get a song right (not there yet though...:( )

I've mentioned on UU before that all of my ukes are named after Star Wars characters:

Fluke Skywalker - a fluke, obviously that named itself really.
Vader - a mango concert Lanakai that I got at a uke fest (uke fest = sci-fi convention for uke geeks to me - thus the start of the Star Wars naming system)
R2 - soprano Stagg with internal pickup (little and electronic like R2D2)
3PO - Recording King resonator (metal, champagne colored, "talks" loudly like C3PO)
Billy D. - Mahogany Mainland tenor (named for the actor who portrayed Lando - has a "smooth" voice like Billy D.)
Jar Jar - the "reject" of my collection. This is a cheap beater uke that I keep in my car.

Last time I listed these names there were some awesome suggestions for future ukes: UkuLeia, Boba Fret, etc. Maybe a Ubass named Jabba is next on the list?

Just pegged a name for my new Epiphone Les Paul Uke. "Lil' Lester"

Also, we ended up with a Fernandes Telecaster guitar whom I dubbed "Suemeh"

Origins of the names, Well, "Lil' Lester" because it is a little Les Paul who's first name is Lester. 'Suemeh" because this Telecaster is actually a very sought after Fender Telecaster copy made in Japan. Got pretty infamous because it truly rivaled the quality of the real Fender, and some people will say even better. Put Fender in a bad state because of that, they they sued Fernandes Guitar over that, and forced the production of them to stop. That put this guitar these days rare, and hard to find, so the name is a play on "Sue Me". You can see the names of some of my strings in my sig..

Makala Dolphin Orange Burst = "GoodDaySunShine" b/c everyone who sees her smiles!

Tonk Bros Banjolele = "Truck" for Tonka Toy Trucks and he's the heaviest one I own

Green Paisley Ukadelic = "Jade-a-Licious" and/or Emerald and/or Oz and/or Seattle (as both of the latter reference "Emerald City")
(before she arrived, I thought I'd call her "Granny Smith" but her color is much more vivid than the pictures indicated)

I have 3 more coming b/c of Kids' Music Project, but won't name them 'til after I see them IRL.

My Ukes all have names, they're listed in the pic in my sig, but should someone come across this thread when I have too many to do the pictures with, here's what they're called:

No Name Brand Purple Soprano - Astrid
Ohana SK10 S Soprano - Lilo
Luna Tattoo Soprano Pineapple - Rhea
Koa Pili Koko Soprano - Hoa
Tanglewood TU 1CE Soprano - Hope
Eleuke Rosewood 100 Series Soprano - Kupuna

They have their names for varying reasons, some people think I'm weird/stupid/too involved with names to play etc, but I like naming them, they give me so much joy seems to me to feel wrong to just play and not even give them a name!

I named my soprano Moore Bettah ukulele with the mermaid headstock inlay "MaidBettah".

.......and for sure it is a work of art, and simply Made Better!

....OR,.....over the last few days i could add a nickname,.......

......something like "FingaTerror" might be appropriate! Man my fingers are sore! (worse with myTom Guy Tenor and it's higher tension)

Didn't realize how much i had let my guitar chops go. I'll be glad when i get some callouses back. (hurts to type even!)
6 or 8 hours a day working on two pieces for a week will do that to ya.

I'm starting to feel a little hardening on the outside of my fingertips,....but underneath it feels like hamburger!
