I've never played Halo 3... I think someone else gave you that idea

My ukulele names:

Tenor Kamaka: Mika (Nakashima Mika)
Concert Kamaka: Mui (little girl in chinese)
Black Applause: Prince (of darkness)
Yellow Applause: EVO (like Steve Vai's guitar)
Lumanog: Tifa (from FF7)

Yay~!

haha I named my instruments some weird names

Tenor: Coconut
Soprano: Macadamia
Guitar: Angela (asked someone and she said said her name as a joke and actually used it.)
Ibanez: Jisei (translation: a haiku written before someones death)
Drums: Mary

the reason my soprano is named Macadamia cuz that was the first thing that came to mind.

I never saw the point in naming inanimate or non-anthropomorphic objects. Instruments, cars, whatever. They don't come to you when you call out to it. They're not like a pet or anything like that, so what's the use?

Since mine is a mango Fluke, it goes by the name of "Mange" in front of people, and "Mangy" when it's just the two of us.
But perhaps it s just in need of a good rub with a microfiber cloth.

The soprano in my contest video is named "Bub" since it is constructed out of bubinga wood. Ugly little bugger.

My cheapie sopranos don't have names (as they're mostly wall-hangers) but my no-brand tenor is named Michealvin (named after the people who gave me the uke: Michelle & Alvin), my surf fluke is named Melissa Raine (named after my girlfriend, Melissa, who said the uke sounded like falling rain when she first heard it) and my mango Kala tenor is named Ce'nedra (pronounced with a soft "z" sound, not an "s" - named after one of my favourite characters from one of my favourite books from one of my favourite authors). I've got another uke on order that should arrive next week. I'll have to play her for awhile before a fitting name comes to me.

My tenor Maple is "Miss Maple" - kind of an Agatha Christie homage.

My Martin S-O is called "China" - named after China Forbes of "Pink Martini."

I call my soprano Little G, for many reasons. It's little, the tuning, but mostly cause it's fun to say "Let me just whip out Little G here & play ya a tune" ;)

My concert size I call Matilda. I love old, classic names- and old classic songs. When I was little I loved to twirl around & sing Waltzing Matilda.

Thanks for the salaams and all, but it's really easy. I use Firefox and in the upper right corner is a search box. I usually have it set to Google. I typed in:

"philosophers song" lyrics

...and hit enter.

I was then a copy and paste away from fame. ;)

Meanwhile, back at the topic...

Interesting to see how many people use male names for their ukes. All of my guitars (that I've named) have been female but "The Notecannon" is definitely male and I always think of Li'i Kahuna as male (though I may be making a Hawai'ian faux pas there).

my sopranino-Carmen after Carmen Miranda and from the song "They Don't Dance Like Carmen No More" by Jimmy Buffett
my soprano-Margarita....for obvious reasons
my concert-Iz
my two tenors-Frank and Lola....another Buffett song
my baritone-Desdamona......a Buffett character
my two cheap sopranos that I keep in the car-Dan and Marie....adulterous characters in the Buffett song "Who's the Blond Stranger"

....and if UU ever markets that special uke they've been hinting about it will be named Jake, because this whole damn thing is all his fault!

After she heard Aldrine perform and sign her uke, my daughter Penny Lane named her aqua concert, Aldrine.

I call my Kala "Rabies" because I chose to buy it instead of taking my four cats to the vet that month.
I call my Pono cedar top "Mortgage Payment" for a similar reason.
I call my Pono mango "Dinner for two" because it cost me about what we'd spend on eating out in a couple of months.
I call my Flukes "Dishwasher" and "Microwave" - tenor and concert respectively - because we could have replaced our aging appliances had I been more diligent.
My Applause is "Sofa" because we needed a new one but I invested in a uke, instead.
And I call my Republic reso "Grounds for divorce...

All of mine are in my sig but i will explain them...

My Kala Ka-c is Kalina which is "evidently" the hawaiian equivilent to Colin, which is my lil one's name. that and it sounds really close to Kala so it seemed fitting...

um, my bass is SX P/J Bass, this one just seemed to be fate. i can trace my family lines back to Essex county in England. i put 2 and 2 together SX=Essex

and finally my Takamine G-230 Guitar. i got my crappy old guitar stolen from my car(sad i know) so i had to have another. went to our local music store and saw this guitar sitting with the likes of Johnsons and J. Reynolds, i played it for 5 minutes total and slapped the 140 bucks on the table... and his name is Oliver from the Musical\Book "Oliver Twist"

sorry if i bored anyone with my stories...

Bass: Gohma. Like in Zelda: Wind Waker and older Zelda.

My first uke- a concert sized Hilo is called The Bonnie Pearl after the cabin we stayed in the summer after I got her.

My second uke- a tenor spalted maple- is called Scrambled Eggs after the song I was learning (Yesterday) and a distinguishing mark on the back.

funny topic. i just bought an `ukulele (`Ohana Vita) a few days ago and didn't think of naming him. So, jamming with my dad with the new `uku -- I was laying down the strumming melody and he was jamming off of that, he kept telling me that the buggah was too loud. Afterwards, my dad, a man of few compliments aka moke, actuallys says it's a nice `uku and that i should name him. hence, his name. building on the pear shape, the richness and loudness, we named him Kapua`a`ama or Kapua`ama for short or Kapuama for even shorter. His name translates to "the Fat/loud/sweet but mostly Fat Pig."

My 13 year old son and his friends named mine, let's see if I can remember them all.

Hilo Soprano: Pau Hana, which I'm told means after work. I don't play this one much, but I painted it with a banner that reads, Pau Hana. It looks pretty sweet.

Yellow Mahalo with mangos and pineapples all over it: Daniel (after one of my son's friends who they tease for being a bit fruity) We've since given this one away. I usually give away the Mahalos to my friends' kids.

Tiki Flea: TikiToo, because we have a cat named Tiki, so the uke is TikiToo

Purple Fluke: Prince (obvious)

Stagg Concert: Bambi, because it's a little stag, natch.

Mele Concert: Obama, for the following reasons; it spent its formative years in both Hawaii and Indonesia, it has both dark and light checkered trim. It speaks with a lovely mahogany tone, and because I got it this fall right before elections.

Pono Tenor: The Covenant. I don't really get why the kids named the tenor The Convenant. It may be because it is the most valuable uke I own. Or it may be because of the hard case vs. gig bag (as in Ark of the...) because when I opened it they would act like it was the briefcase in Pulp Fiction, so the name stuck.

Hilo Baritone: Andre. Because it is the Giant.

I just got a Mahalo Telecaster knock-off. It hasn't been named yet, I'm still getting to know it. It's a cheapy, but if 1 out of 5 Mahalo's have good tone, then I lucked out. I haven't even switched out the strings yet and it still sounds good. I may not give this Mahalo away. We'll see.

A Risa Uke Solid that I'll likely name Riza (referring to the coolest lieutenant ever, Riza Hawkeye of Fullmetal Alchemist fame), a resonator uke that I might name Wendee (referring to one of my favourite voice actresses of all time, Wendee Lee), and Mainland's upcoming banjo uke, which I don't know what to name.

well i have names for a few things... humm.. i have them in my sig. but here is the reason..

-1949 00-17 Martin Acoustic Guitar (Bobby D.) this guitar is the same year make and model that bob dylan first played when he was hitting the coffee houses of new york. bob dylan was a big reason i got into music.. and guitar

-2005 DM Martin Acoustic Guitar (MartyMcFaceMelt) this guitar has had a few names.. and this is just its name rightnow.. my friend plays "melt your face bluegrass" and i would love to melt face one day.. thus the name..

-2006 Concert Flea Uke (hardtimes) this is kind of a future name.. this is my toss around the world but still sound good ukulele.. thus when i am drinking.. dirving.. (not together) camping.. it will get played!! it will be hard core.. and see hardtimes!!

-2007 Concert Koaloha Uke (papa) named after the cool guy i met at koaloha and was super nice.. and had true aloha in his smile! you know who it is..

I don't usually give ukes names, but there is one I made and went a bit "creative" with the headstock design. It looks a bit like a pair of pointy ears sticking up. It is a cute little soprano, so it got called "The Kitten". I've got another which came to me with the back coming adrift. I glued it, and decided to add a screw and a washer for added security. Instead of a washer, I used a Canadian one cent piece which had a hole bored through it, dated 1832. My wife calls it my "Copper-bottomed uke", I just call it "Penny".

but i cant think of one for her.....so i think i'll just keep it as 'the uke' for now

I have not named my ukes - although I usually name my cars.

This thread has inspired me though - so I think I will.

1. Marca Aquila soprano - "Maria" - as in West Side Story. She's from New York, although she is Italian - not Puerto Rican. She's sweet, petite, and oh so romantic. "Maria...Maria... I just met a girl called Maria..."

2. Favilla Baritone - "Luciano" - as in Pavarotti. He's a baritone of course, not a tenor, but he's got those velvet tones and that bravura sound. He's also the more classical of the two. Another Italian of course.

3. P'mico soprano - I cannot name this one, because it technically belongs to my son, but if I did its name would be "May", in honor of May Singhi Breen, the "Ukulele Lady" of the 1920's. Its strong voice is appropriate to the memory of this bold Irish woman who demanded respect for the lowly uke.

4. Kohala (Lanikai) soprano - "Tramp". My other ukes have spoiled me and "Tramp" doesn't get played much anymore. However, this is the uke I will take when I go camping, to the beach and on the open road. Her intonation is a bit off, her sound - not so great - but when it's too nasty out for the more delicate members of the group, "Tramp" will be up for the game.

5. First Act soprano - This one actually sounds better than "Tramp" - another "road and camp" uke. I think I'll call her "Sheila" - why? I have no idea.

"Soap" is hysterical! :rotfl:

I have a new to me vintage Kamaka concert that has to be "Honey", not original but she is exactly the golden color of sunlight through honey, and she is sweet!

The Pono tenor still doesn't have a name. and there is a new to me older Brüko baritone that needs one.

So I never really found a name that stuck for my Mainland tenor, until about a week ago. Darunia. He was the leader of the Gorons in Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time. Then I got my Flea last week, and instantly named it Lord Jabu Jabu after the fish-god of the Zora.

Normally, my son names my ukes, so I've been waiting to find out how he would christen my new Fender Nohea. Over vacation he informed me that we would call her "Lola"—I dug it, the Fender is pretty, kind of sexy and a little flashy, Lola worked for me.

Today, I found out that Lola is the middle name of my son's piece of work girlfriend. Needless to say, I'm not her biggest fan. Not sure if I should request a name change or let it lie. Got to pick your battles, right? Aargh!

Lola was my Mom's name and also the name of a character in the Jimmy Buffett song, "Frank and Lola". My pair of tenors are named Frank and Lola. Lola's a fine name. You'll have the uke longer than he'll have the girlfriend. And Lola was a fan dancer too....can't get much sexier and flashier than that.

for me, it's kinda like having a pet name for a boyfriend/girlfriend. like calling them, "pumpkin", "sweetheart", "corazón", or "sugarbum" (a personal favorite) because there is this relationship between the two of you. there is history. you wouldn't call a complete stranger any of these things (in most cultures, anyway).
giving your ukulele a name makes that particular ukulele more personal to you. for example, someone could have the exact same make and model as mine, but it wouldn't be my "scout". there wouldn't be that history. i would choose "scout" over a brand spankin' new ukulele identical to "scout", if someone offered me the choice.

also i got this personal theory that when you love or have a bond with a certain instrument, the music that you make with that instrument is just little bit sweeter. even if it is only to your own ears.

"then again i could be wrong and this could all be a terrible tragedy" - tyler

don't mind me and my ramblings, i know i'm a hopeless romantic. (heavy sigh)

I've never given names to inanimate objects like cars or other items. Even if I owned a boat and it had a name as they normally do, it would probably just be "the boat" to me. Thus my ukuelele is just "my ukulele".

My latest acquisition, a Risa Solid Soprano, is named Riley.

I enjoy giving my ukes names, and it's also nice to have a name rather than a description, e.g. Angie rather than spruce-top concert.

Rich is more resistant to naming his ukes (although he does name them to humor me) but he only has two on the boat, while I have six. Apparently he is immune to UAS.
