Idea Inception:

Remember that thread I made a while back (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22073) asking for suggestions on how we could contribute to the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Foundation's presence at the Cairns Australia Ukulele Festival?

Well, there were some great suggestions in that thread. After thinking about what would be the best way to contribute, I've decided on two projects.

First, I'd like to do a "sequel" of sorts to our "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" tribute. This one will be done in the same vein. Any and all members are invited to contribute. More on that at a later date.

Our second contribution will be in the form of a compilation CD. This CD will be filled with original songs from UU members. All proceeds will go to the foundation.

A CD is a great option because it can continue to be sold at future events. Deb, the foundation director, expressed desire to also send the CD's out to other chapters in other countries to be offered for sale in their areas of the world. The CD may also be offered for sale as a digital download on iTunes.

Logistics:

The main obstacle that we had to overcome was the cost of duplication. I am extremely happy to announce that the foundation has agreed to take care of all duplication costs. All we have to do is get them a master.

Again, any and all UU members are invited to contribute. If you don't write songs, you can still contribute in some way. Our CD will need a title and artwork. All aspects of the CD should be created by UU members.

To help make decisions on the title, artwork, and songs (and anything else that comes up), I have asked some members to be part of a panel. These people are:

buddhuu
deach
hoosierhiver
Lisaxy424
RevWill
sukie
Ukulele JJ

I will also serve on this panel. Panel members do not vote on their own submissions.

All individual songs and artwork would remain the property of the individual artists, while the foundation would have rights to the compilation only. The foundation would not have the ability to create any derivative works based on the songs or distribute them in any way other than as part of the compilation. If your song is chosen to be a part of the compilation, you will be sent a contract. UU member Baumer (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/member.php?u=12776) has graciously offered to draft these contracts pro bono.

Deadlines:

Our timeline isn't terrible, but it's not too lenient either.

Our master needs to be done and out the door by May 1st, 2010. This gives the foundation one month to make duplicates.

UPDATE: The final song list will be announced on March 16th, 2010. This gives the contributing artists one and a half months to record their song as professionally as possible.

Please submit your entries no later than 5PM CST, March 15th.

The artwork and title should be finalized by May 1st, 2010, and will be sent over to the foundation at the same time as the audio master.

Selection Process:

Post your submissions as replies in this thread. You may submit your songs as videos or mp3's. I suggest box.net (http://box.net/) for your mp3 hosting needs.

Title ideas and artwork submissions will also be posted as replies in this thread.

Inspiration:

Ideally, I would like the songs on this compilation to be inspired by the foundation in some way. This is not a requirement, it is only a preference.

To help stoke the creative fires, here are some words from Deborah Robins, the director of the Duchenne Foundation:

If you were looking for inspiration I offer a common saying of many of our boys: *"here for a good time not a long time". *It was so sad when I was reading Doug the second Twilight book (teenage fever at the moment) and Bell is very much heartbroken when her *lover leaves her to the point of physical chest pain etc. and it is a repeated description in the book. Doug said to me, "you're going to hurt like that when I die arent' you"? *It was one of those few times where there is an opportunity for an honest conversation to help us both, *but I couldn't bear it so I led the conversation to the difference between romantic love and other forms of love, which I regret now. I hope I assured him at some level that I will hurt very much so that he knows I love him.

Captain Google:

As my final thoughts on this project for now, let's not forget who is ultimately responsible for this project. Vincent Daniel Rooney, aka "Captain Google," is the main reason for this opportunity. Without CG, none of this would be possible. Think about him as you contribute to this project.

When people ask me what UU is all about, I point them to the tribute video we made for Vincent (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZknGc7eDmI). Let's keep the fire burning, and Captain Google's memory alive.

That's all I have to say about this project for now, save to say that I am excited, honored, and proud to be able to contribute to this cause.

Here is the Duchenne Foundation site:

This is awesome! I'll just have to dig up that old book.........

Soooo, we'd basically post a "rough draft" so to speak, the songs will be chosen, then we record it......That's what I'm understanding.

Yup, that's it. Your rough draft can be as polished as you like. It can be studio quality, or it can be recorded through the mic on your computer.

If your submission is chosen, then you must record it as professionally as possible.

Thanks for your interest! I hope you write something! BTW, your song doesn't need to have lyrics. It can be an instrumental.

Great idea, Seeso! I would love to donate "Back To The Mainland" to this worthy cause. Here's the link to a rough mix of the demo. The finished version is basically what you hear, but it now has real bass on it. All it really needs at this point is a final mix and mastering.

Good luck with the project!

Thanks very much for getting us into shape for these projects, Seeso. As always, we'd be lost without you.

This is why I love UU. The love and the family vibe actually manifests itself in results that everyone can see and hear and share. Judging by the comments that were left on the YT video we did for Vince, the music made by this community can really move people. Heck, even the fact that we do it moves people. That still kind of overwhelms me a little.

If we can contribute just a little bit simply by doing what we love doing, then the more of it we do the better for everyone! :)

As always, I'm grateful for the chance to be a part of it. :shaka:

Yes, you are correct on both questions.

Alan, thanks for the consideration and your offer! I think you have a lot of songs that would be appropriate, but I'd love to hear something specific to the CD. It would be an honor to have you on it.

What about public domain compositions?

Public domain is fine, but I don't want there to be too many public domain works on the CD. Keep that in mind when you submit.

Your videos have some pretty clean audio. Why don't you go ahead and submit something and we'll see what we can do? We can always cross that bridge when we come to it. I'd love to have you on the CD.

Seeso: Thanks so much! Of course right now I am totally drawing a blank. I have that one video up on YouTube that I did as a general comfort song that is for anyone going through something difficult; but it promises things will be better...and I don't know if that's always the case with MD.

I need to research and think on it more.

Baumer and I think it would be a good idea for anyone submitting works to this project to familiarize yourselves with copyright law.

Here is a great FAQ on copyrighting works:

http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/

The above link gives a lot of general info about:

When a copyright is created (as soon as you create the work)
Benefits of copyright registration (need to have it in order to bring an infringement lawsuit, etc.)
How to register a copyright

The US Copyright Office has a new electronic online registration process, which makes copyright registration easier and quicker.

If people that are contributing to this compilation have questions about registering their copyrights, Baumer can help you out with the process.

This is a really wonderful thing you are doing! I first learned about Duchenne's because of Darius Weems (http://www.dariusgoeswest.org/), when he was trying to get his wheelchair "pimped" on "Pimp My Ride." (He lives in my hometown, and, what a nice and funny guy.) I hope the CD is able to raise some serious money for the foundation!!

I have never been much of a songwriter, so I don't know if I will be able to get in on this. But I'll definitely buy a cd!

Is the CD going to emphasize songs with vocals or are all submissions accepted?

I've got a song written (just finished today). I need to rehearse it a bit more, then I'll be doing a video. The chorus came on its own; the verses came after doing more reading and watching of videos at the Duchenne Foundation site (http://www.parentproject.org.au/html/s01_home/home.asp).

I'm glad I read back through the thread. Because I am having some serious second thoughts about the song I wrote. I knew I couldn't write a "things are all going to get better, just hang on" song like I did for Cat'r ("When The Wheel Turns"), because for a boy/young man with Duchenne MD, there is no happy ending. But I'm almost afraid that what I did write is perhaps darker than it needs to be or darker than what would be good for the CD. I'll submit it, but I'll be thinking of something gentler to write too.

Thanks for second chances. :)

I beg to differ, CountryMouse - there can be a "happy ending", as we saw when we held Vincent's hands as he went... he is now free to run, and do the things he slowly lost as he grew older. He is also now with his uncle Billy, a Duchenne patient who passed long ago, and his "Granddude", and my Mom, all who loved him dearly...
His smile, and the "WOW" he said as he was fading, speak of a better place for those like him who have definitely earned it!
Sorry - gotta go, can't see screen just now- but try to write something in that vein if you can... I have a feeling you have the heart for it!

I play ukulele in a 6-piece band and I'd love to submit a track for this. Are you looking for solo uke tracks or would full-band songs be acceptable? I could trim it down to just a uke and a guitar or something to highlight the uke sound more if that would be more appropriate. Please let me know, I'd really like to contribute. Thanks.

Thank you for those beautiful insights, Mike. ::hug::

I redid a couple verses, to incorporate more of what a boy with Duchenne would want to accomplish while here on Earth and made it more positive. And also what he'd like to tell those who will be left behind (for now). I played it for my Cancer Family Care social worker today; and she said it's good, that it would work for people in a lot of situations.

I don't know. After reading your post, I don't know if whatever I write will be good enough, though. I'll just submit what I have and hope it's okay. It's gonna be a few days yet--I have to get a strap for a new ukulele I want to use.

Full-band songs are fine! In fact, an ukulele doesn't even have to be in it, but I would encourage the use of at least one.

No songs from me (and you wouldn't want them anyway! :D) but I might be able to contribute some artwork - but what is the artwork for? Would it be for the cover, or do individual songs get a little artwork (as an avatar or something), or is it something else entirely?

We'll need artwork for the front cover, the back cover, the pages of the insert, and the CD itself. Please submit!

I'm trying to write a song a month. I'll see if I can do something that works for this!

Great, Sam! Looking forward to it!

in the art work are we allowed to use the UU logo and artwork?

for a title: Strength From Afar (how you too can change the world)

Yes, we can use the logo in the artwork. I'll put your title in the suggestions! Thanks!

I haven't written a song in ages... but I'm trying to finish my first uke song in time to submit it for this.

This whole idea is awesome. People with severe disabilities like this are invariably involved in big support nets (I should know) and anything that can help that net stay intact for people that live with the issues CG had is a good thing. Any help that anyone gives to this project is fabulous even if it isn't included in the final product.

Hi,

I have the honour to submit a song on behalf of award winning performer and Cairns Ukulele Festival's patron, Seaman Dan. He's 80 years of age and not much into computers , hence my submission on his behalf.

Uncle Seaman Dan is from the the Torres Straight Islands, an island group north of Australia. The ukulele is an integral part of their traditional music and most of Seaman Dan's music features the ukulele. Seaman Dan has won numerous prestigeous awards here in Australia.

When I told him about Ukulele Underground and the CD, he immediately offered to contribute.

The song he would like to submit is called "Torres Straight Hula",

You can listen to a sound bite on his web site, http://www.seamandan.com.au/ (on the home page)

He will re-record the song in a professional studio, if he's selected to be on the CD - the new version will feature the ukulele even more prominently.

Cheers,

Gaby

Hi,

here's my cover submission as well as a CD title submission... Just made something up for the subtitle as well (can be changed of course) and didn't have original logos to work with at this stage. Song titles are simply those submitted thusfar. Right is cover, left is inside the case and back.

The blue ball with the hand is the logo for the Duchenne Foundation and they even have a web site listed under www.blueball.org. I put a little vague rainbow as well as the UU logo in it.

The CD could then look similar to the blue ball with the UU logo.

The name I got from a Foundation member. She said that another member had said to her that she was chasing rainbows, meaning trying to do one last thing for her deceased son by helping the Foundation. I also see it as something almost symbolic for the research being done...

Hope you like it...

Seeso,

What I did ("You'll Always Be By My Side") was on my old camera. I now have a Flip UltraHD, which is fairly quiet. Here is what it sounds like. I had my computer off also, so no computer fan noise being picked up. I can rerecord my song if the judges decide my track would be useful for the CD. I'm not totally happy with the performance I gave in my old-camera video anyway.

I've been watching the song submissions start to pick up, and I'm happy and grateful for those who have taken the time to submit to this cause. I feel confident at this point that we'll have a fantastic compilation album.

However, the art submissions have been slow. I think that we can attribute some of that slowness to lack of a title. It's hard to design a cover when we don't have a title to design for. We should have decided on one before asking for art submissions.

I have asked the committee to vote on a title that has already been submitted, in the hopes that our art submissions will subsequently pick up.

It is with great pleasure that I announce the official title of this compilation album. It was the first submission received in this thread, and I think it fitst the project perfectly.

TITLE: Ukulele Underground United
SUBTITLE: A CD to Benefit the Duchenne Foundation

Congrats, Ukulelegal!

Now all you artists, get to submitting!

If you've got any concerns or comments about this decision, please feel free to drop me an email or PM.
Thanks!

SUBTITLE: A CD to Benefit the Duchenne Foundation

If I may suggest one small tweak: What if that first bit were changed from "A CD" to "An Album" or maybe even just "Music" or "A Collection of Music"?

Reason being, if you make the physical format part of the name--especially if the name is firmly incorporated into the artwork--that might cause issues if format ever changes. What if it becomes an iTunes download? What if someone wants to press a limited-edition vinyl version?

Just a thought...

JJ

c) Excelsius edit (http://www.box.net/shared/ojr3494yoy) (C tuning, edited version of the long one, more or less the same as the Schaepe, except the different tuning and the overdubs)

Its and original tune called "Song Still Remains" that I wrote for my Uncle Bob who passed away about a year and a half ago. He was an avid uke player and we'd often jam at family parties. I used his favorite uke (a Koaloha tenor) to record all the lead lines in the song so a little bit of Uncle Bob could live on in the song. Anyways, hope you guys like it :P.

Wolfgang,
I actually like the middle part but it may be just a tad too long. It sounds like you do play that entire section twice before the ascending climb to bring it back down to the first part again. Maybe only play that part once and then bring it back in? I really like the picking and the progression there. Up to you though. They all sound good.

I did another image for the CD cover. My thoughts are that we can put a "cloud" of the names of contributors. However, I like how this looks. so....

Note: The image is huge and the DF logo looks much better at actual size.

Am I too late to slide one under the wire?
I'd love to be part of this project.
Unfortunately, it didn't come together until this morning.
This is very rough, obviously,
and I have not yet uploaded it to a file sharing service.
But I will!

The submissions end on Monday, we announce the final track list on Tuesday.

For panel judges who may not have received my last email -- final deadline for submissions is set for 5PM CST, Monday the 15th of March.

After the deadline passes, rank all of the submissions in order of preference and send me the list before 9 or 10AM CST Tuesday the 16th of March.

I'll take a look at everybody's lists and assign a point value to each ranking. The songs with the most points will make the cut.

Victoria Vox - "Colorful Heart" (http://www.victoriavox.com/ColorfulHeart.mp3)
© 2010 victoria vox

turn into the light
where the dark turns bright
with a little love
you will shine

there's so much to see
when you start to believe
that you're not alone
don't be sorry

you've got a colorful heart
and you've gotta let it show
cuz there will always be a reason
to not let anyone know
So come out, don't hide
put your worries aside (I'll stand by your side)
you and your colorful heart
you and your colorful heart

when you share your smile
it lives on for miles
and it's so easy
and worth the try

I can't believe I did this.

There's another entry that I forgot to add. Craig Robertson wrote a song specifically for this album. We've been working on it for the past week. I actually played piano on it and Zoe Janzen is singing backup.

I don't know how this happened. I know it's way past the deadline, but I need to ask you guys to please squeeze him in. In my stupid brain I must have thought he was already entered, because we'd been working on it so feverishly.

What do you say? We'll take a point deduction penalty if we need to.

If I can offer my opinion as a member of UU...?
I encourage you to accept these late submissions
without prejudice or penalty.
After all, the goal is not to win a contest
but to put together the best CD possible
for the DMD Foundation and those they serve.
If these submissions don't make the cut,
no harm done.
If they do make the cut
(and I think they are excellent offerings!)
the CD is enhanced and everybody wins.

It's about the boys with DMD, right?

I love being part of such a talented and generous community!

here's my entry for the cover: http://www.jontom.net/various/uuu_duchenne.jpg

I wanted to give the impression of everyday's life without any boundaries. Also I've used "Bello" as main font :)

I like the image and the distressed style. However, the font leaves a little to be desired... it's a bit hard to read. Lowercase "u" looks like "a", etc. But the old fashioned look is neat.

Seeso, I love all the submissions! Some make me smile, some bring me to tears, some just make me move and move me; many are to be listened to over and over again, and ALL remind me of Vince in oneone or another! Thanks to all who have submitted - maybe a 2-cd set is in order? I'll buy them for everyone I know!!

Well, my teacher (Jody Kamisato) made an original song called Heaven On Thursday

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8m4pP-hE84

Here is another video of the song, but it has Canon in D at the beginning and it is also played with Chris Salvador (other teacher)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxSFj-lYb4o

I will ask my teachers if it is okay to use their song on the CD

I'm guessing that is a big YES!!! But I'm wondering about radio airplay there in Australia, and here for that matter. I'm sure with the talent I heard going onto this thing, there's got to be at least some regional successes. Has anybody looked into this as a promotional tool? Satellite radio, the Margaritaville channel on Sirius/XM comes to mind, or a station in Hawaii... Of course I don't know what I'm on about here... Just typing out loud...

Hello everyone,

The official CD launch will be Friday June 25th at the Cairns Regional Gallery, 5.30pm. It is also the opening night of the ukulele art exhibition which is part of the the Cairns Ukulele Festival. Over 50 artists from around Australia were given a ukulele to decorate so that these could be sold after the exhibition to help raise money for the Duchenne Foundation; the result has been overwhelming! Ofcourse we will try to get as much media attention for this as possible!

I will keep you posted on this.

In the mean time, thanks everyone, also on behalf of the Duchenne Foundation. Deb from the Foundation works tirelessly to lift the profile of the Duchenne Foundation which is not easy with limited resources. Despite the fact that 1 in 3500 boys (and some girls) have DMD, very few people are familiar with it here, so this CD is going to help them tremendously.

A big thank you as well to Seeso who made it all happen!

Hi guys,

Just touching base. All went really well, and now that everyone is in town for the Cairns Ukulele Festival, we expect to sell tons of UUU CDs!

The Cairns Ukulele Festival is in full swing until this Sunday, then we'll get these CDs and MP3s out into the world!

If you're interested in the art exhibition, and ukes that will be for sale online, please keep your eye on www.blueball.org.au as they will be organising the eBay sale and tenders.

Cheers,

Gaby

Glad to hear you received your copy! Deb from the Duchenne Foundation tells me all were sent so you all should be receiving your CDs soon.

The CD did really well at the Cairns Ukulele Festival, and the CD is now also being sold at various ukulele clubs around the country!

To be clear:

The CDBaby link is for downloading the album in MP3 format. It's not available from the site in CD format yet but should be in a few days or so. When it is, it'll be at the same link.
