hey guys,
so i have like a 50 dollar limit. and i think a uke would be awesome. i started a uke club at school, and she always goes with me, of course, but she doesnt have a uke of her own. i think a uke would be a cool gift for her. any suggestions on uke with my super low budget? thanks! merry christmas!

a Makala dolphin bridge soprano is your best bet i think

really? i always had the impression that oddly colored uke didnt sound as good. well, my friend had a dolphin. i thought they didnt sound too great. any other ideas?

Amazon has the Lanikai LU-21 for $59.00 with Aquila strings - that's where I purchased mine.

Here are a few more options from MGM:

Makala Soprano with Aquila strings and setup, $42.95 + $14.95 shipping.

Kala KA-15S Soprano Mahogany (laminate) with Aquila strings and setup, $49.95 + $13.85 shipping.

I don't have either one, but people who have posted here who have these ukuleles seem to like them quite a bit.

Yes, the Makala Mahogany with the Aquila strings is another route you can look at. It has the more traditional look to it. IMO, you really can't go wrong with either one and the price PLUS the MGM service can't be beat!! :D

It probably wasn't set up properly and didn't have good strings on it. That makes a huge difference. MGM is your man! He'll set one up properly and get it to you quickly.

I have the Lanikai LU-21 soprano as my starter uku with the Aquila strings right from Amazon. It was on sale. It is a great insturment for the $$$. I loved starting on it. it has a great sound for that price. The Aquila strings probably help. I probably wouldn't have gotten so strongly hooked on the ukulele if it hadn't sounded as good as it does. Good Luck and have a Merry Christmas.

I have the Lanikai Kohala HU-21 which is a tad cheaper than the LU-21 if your budget won't stretch that far and I think it sounds really nice.
I've played with the Makala as well and it sounds nice in it's own way but the Lanikai has a fuller sound to my ears.
I use Worth strings on my Lanikai.

I started with a really cheap soprano (equivalent to about $20) which I bought at the Glastonbury Festival last year and annoyed the hell out of everyone in the tent with it. Having clunked my way through basic theory I moved up to a Lanikai LU-21 Concert which came with Aquila strings and would have been in your price range. I have been really impressed with it to the extent that I have put off any further upgrades for the time being, well, until I get a bit better anyway. I am no expert you understand but I would really recommend the Lanikai as a decent entry level instument based on my own experience.
