Hi!
in anticipation of my first ukulele arriving in the post, i'm looking for a bit of inspiration on youtube. i'm new to uke so dont know all the players - i've come across james hill and jake of course. can you recommend any youtube vids for me of them or any other players - i'm mainly interested in instrumental stuff, any style.

many thanks
Jonny

Here is one from a guitar/uke/mandolin workshop I attended last summer. It is Ernie Hawkins, who until that week, had never picked up a uke (he is an amazing guitar player/performer/instructor). He managed to fire together a fun tune called Juking the Uke. Certainly not one of the normal players, but it is a great instrumental.

Here are a few...

Roy Smeck, an absolutely amazing player who isn't well enough known today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcQYt7xvA8M

John King, who resurrected or rather reinvented a style of playing known as campanella (bells): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=935ExOpT5bI

Herb Ohta, known as Ohta-san, who often plays music we would describe as typically "Hawaiian". Note his lute fingerpicking (thumb UNDER forefinger): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGriSxhgDSE

Somewhat random duet. Just like it, and shows what a full sound 2 ukuleles can make: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSeByqNbYYc

Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. Yes, they're silly, but their arranging is really spot on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3gp7B8WC4Q

I could go on, but that's enough to get your toes wet. If you come across anything special, either post it, or PM me. I run a ukulele club at a school, and am always looking for inspirational footage.

:)

I can't believe you guys didn't mention AG (ukuleleoversoul) and Dominator (dominatoruke) . . . There's also Brittni Paiva, Derick Sebastian, Kalei Gamiao, Troy Fernandez. OK . . . that's enough for now. You can also check the video forum, a lot of our members are awesome.

And if anyone is an inspiration, my choice would would deach.

I agree with all of the above, and find that if I like someone's video (or their choices) I can find a lot more by simply going to their home page on YouTube and looking at their Favorites. YouTube also sends me a message when someone I have subscribed to favors a new video. A lot of my best recent views come from that.

thanks so far guys!
i'm going to be a while looking through all these... so far the real find for me has been Ohta-san (thanks pulelehua)

:D

This is all pretty new to me, too, so I understand that feeling of "Oh my god, I never knew..." Wish I'd done all this years ago.

I knew id miss lots of people out I like watching lol apologies ukecantdothat

No apologies needed, I didn't mean it like that! I was putting mine up while yours was going up, so I never saw it! I not in that company, but thanks!

Can't go wrong with Ohta San!

Don't try and be Ohta San overnight or you'll get discouraged, work your way up from simpler stuff, first mountain you climb don't have to be Everest start with hills close to home.
