Ok,
So my 30th birthday is in February and my super-awesome in-laws (I know, I am lucky) want to buy me a new ukulele. Now, I am a fairly new player (only about 6 or 7 months now) and I am very happy with my $40 Hilo that I use to strum and sing (not much of a finger picker yet). I have tried to explain that my current uke's junkiness is kinda why I like it, but they really want to get me something nice and personal for my birthday.

SO....

They have demanded that I choose 3 ukuleles for under $200 from which they will make a "surprise" selection. I have already decided (based off of the postings on UU) that a Mainland and a Flea are in order, but I need a third choice.

That do you think?

How about something nice from Musicguymic's store:

The Flea and Mainland are already very good choices!
But you can also get a very nice Kala or Ohana for that price. Perhaps even one with an electronic pickup.

I've also been seeing some whacky looking Riptide ukes at his store.
Good luck. I hope I'll be lucky as you when I get married some day :)

VERY COOL IN-LAWS! ! ! !

you can get a high end Lanikai. I stated with an inexpensive Lanikai which came with Aquilla strings and sounds pretty darn good. I have seen there higher end models and that could be a good 3rd.

Take a look before you put them down.

But I would try to drop a hint of which ever your favorite is.

I agree, they are great in-laws! Right now I'm leaning towards a Flea since its clearly the most durable and I am a clutz. I should probably point out that I play a soprano and don't plan on getting a larger style...Then again, those Mainlands look pretty awesome and get solid reviews. I'll have to check the Lanikai and Ohana sites now...

I have a mainland and it is great. Plus it's the customer service that you get from Mike that put's it way over the top.

I agree about checking out MGM :agree: I have dealt with him and his service is outstanding.
BTW, he also sells the Fleas & Flukes!!!

This is a sweet instrument, pretty to look at and comfortable to play. I'm really enjoying playing it. A lot!!! (Thanks to Paul for selling it to me)

Thanks for buying it. It was really bothering me that I wasn't palying it. Really a comfortable instrument to play, the neck feels just-right to me.

How about making your third choice five Makala dolphins? :)

I would go for a flea. It is a good solid instrument, fun designs, great playability, good sound and projection. They are great all around instruments that you can take anywhere.
