What's the sound and intonation like? Do you think they'd be ok for a 4 year old to learn on?

The intonation is fine. It sounds like a plastic ukulele and a very expensive one at that.

Why not get your 4 year old a proper ukulele to play? You can buy some serious all-solid ukes at about this price: the Ohana SK-25, the pineapple and the zebra are all available at the same price or cheaper.

True. But none of them is appropriate for whirlpool-parties. So at least Mr. Hefner and me NEED these plastic beauties at all costs. The pink one is da bomb! Sold!

I don't understand most of what you've written. I may be a bit too old.

I didn't play the pink one, but the green one was really little more than a toy.

It was well-made and played fairly well. But it sounded like a plastic uke. A Dolphin is certainly less expensive.

Considering that you can generally pick up a Maccaferri for just under a hundred bucks these days, I might have to give these a pass for the original if I can get one...

leftovermagic84
01-21-2010, 04:15 AM
I'd be curious is this was about 1/4 the street price. For that amount of scratch I have to agree with Mr. Middleton or Ahnko Honu and go solid wood for playability or a flea for durability.

I love plastic. I'm a fan of my Flea, my wife's Dolphin, and even my Carnival. But that's just waaay too much money for a plastic uke, at least for my wallet.

We're loving the plastic (is fantastic), but hating the price. Plastic is cheap (despite the price of oil), which means The Man is pocketing the markup. We hates us The Man!

I know. But it's whatever the market will bear. And how can you hate MGM?! Aint' he the Man in this case?

I've seen a video of the green one in action (not that the color matters for the sound) and thought it sounded excellent. I've been searching for that video ever since and can't find it. I suspect it sounds much better than the 1950's plastics. But we'll see. (again, squee!)

+1. Woof. That's only $10 than a base model Flea. I was figuring Dolphin money plus or minus a bit.

True, so we may see these drop in price after the plastic fanatics ;) get their hands on them and everyone else holds off.
But I'd say MGM isn't the Man (boo) in this case, because he isn't the one regulating the price, he's the dealer who sets up the uke and distributes it in a timely fashion, which makes him the man (yay).

the man=good. the Man = bad.

Agreed. A MAJOR part of the charm of a plastic uke is its cheapness. I can think of SO many better ways to spend $170 on a uke.

Fight the power!

Heck, tear the tags off your mattresses and run with scissors - go wild!

He's the middle man. I doubt if he'll be buying these things for $25 and selling them for $169. The Man is the guy upstream who's taking a few bucks worth of molded plastic and selling it at Kala prices.

I'd be all over that orange one if it were (a lot) more reasonably priced. How can it cost that much more than a Spongebob (http://www.totalmusicsupply.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=101660)?

I think the freight cost from the factory plays a role in the price. Recently prices have gone up significantly.

Holy cow that's totally insane! I thought maybe these would be like $30 or something. Doesn't $169 buy a pretty decent solid wood uke? Unless I'm missing something, these will be a tough sell.

On closer inspection, I noticed that they look very similar in style to the Islander "Semi-Deluxe" model, which was the 2nd tier Islander (between the regular Islander and the Deluxe model). Notice the bridge:
http://www.catfish1952.com/plasticsfiles/islander1b.jpg

and the new ones:
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c345/musicguymic/020-1.jpg

The headstock is also similar and they share the "zero fret" like the Islanders, TV Pals and modern-day Fleas and Flukes. I know Jim Beloff said he looked for the original molds of the Maccaferri ukes, but they were lost or destroyed. Looks like someone in Japan did a close study of the older ukes.

I have a vague memory of someone having posted a link to some ukes a lot like those that were being sold by some company in Japan. I seem to remember that the price in Yen was equally insane when converted to dollars.

I think the freight cost from the factory plays a role in the price. Recently prices have gone up significantly.

That actually may be a good sign. When the economy took a dump in 2008, there was a huge amount of surplus shipping capacity that drove the cost of shipping way down. I read an article last year that said more than 12% of the world's container ships are (or were) mothballed. If shipping prices are going up, it could mean they're getting more freight. Eventually there will be enough traffic to put some of the mothballed ships back into service, which will drive the price back down a bit.

I'm holding out for a uke made out of the same material as those black boxes in planes. That way when I crash and burn on stage, I'll still have an uke that can be recovered. It will be dubbed "The black box uke"

I know it's not MGM's fault, but I'm really disappointed. I can't spend that on a "backpack uke."
