View Full Version : Put Your City on the UU Map!

So, I thought it was a really cool idea that cheeseburger (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/member.php?u=1033) had about making a member map of all the cities in the world that UU visits.

I thought it was such a great idea, that I made an editable Google map that we can all contribute to. We can even view this map in Google Earth. Once it starts to grow, just think how cool a Google Earth fly-by tour of all the cities will be!

Just think how cool it will be when I figure out how to use this thing!

Ugh. Can anyone else figure it out? Here's the link:

Ukulele Underground Members (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=109093481034122753733.00044cdb24d27208e3692&ie=UTF8&z=19)

Please, no street addresses! I don't want any crazy stalkers getting crazy ideas. Only enter the name of your city, please.

I was able to put a picture of myself in my city, but that's as far as I got. I don't know how anyone that's not me can add their city to the map.

If you want to add your picture, you have to first upload the picture to an image host, like imageshack (http://www.imageshack.us/). Then you copy the information in the text box labeled "Direct link to image".

Once you have that info copied, you can paste it into your placemark description on Google Maps by pressing the image icon. Just make sure that you're in "rich text" mode.

Thanks to anyone that wants to help me figure this thing out!

Peace!

Frood

Figured it out.

Just go straight to the link.

- Make sure you are signed in!!!

- Find your city on the map.

- Click on the edit button (a series of tools will appear on the map).
[trouble shooter: there won't be an edit button if you haven't signed in yet]

-Click on the blue bubble tool that looks kinda like a hot air balloon in the top left hand corner of the map then click to put it where ever you are on the map. (Remember, no street addresses, just cities is fine!)

-Write your details. (city/country AND UU screen as the TOPIC and then put your personal info so we know who you are in the part that says DESCRIPTION)

Click save and you're done!!!

@Frood: For the balloon-like thingy to appear, you may have to click the "Edit" button first. Then, look in the left upper corner for map editing tools.

Not sure about bonfire on the beach. I went to a party at Ocean Beach in SF once and the wind was so howling that we ended up eating sand most of the time. But, to meet the UU gang, I would put up with the wind and the fog...(may have to buy a new uke after that, though.)

Golden Gate Park would be good place to hang out, but sometimes you have to compete with the african drummers. :) Actually there's sooo many places uke could go!

a very good point jjsdad. the beach is windy as all get out. scratch that. golden gate park has plenty of meadows for us to share with the drummers, hacky sackers, frisbee tossers, devil stick jugglers, theater troupes, dog walkers, medicinal mary jane smokers, etc.

This map is great fun. I've been searching it for the past 20 minutes.

Also, when you magnify to the closest images available, I find surprising spots in which UU members dwell.

I, as stated in my Google Maps description, live in a pasture.
Rayan lives in the middle of a 5-lane street. Looks like a one way street too.
ExperimentJon lives in a parking lot.
Dustin lives in a street.

This map is great fun. I've been searching it for the past 20 minutes.

Also, when you magnify to the closest images available, I find surprising spots in which UU members dwell.

I, as stated in my Google Maps description, live in a pasture.

Hells Yeah! I'm there!

I have another entry of where I live in the US (I don't officially live there although it's my legal place of residence as far as the county is concerned), since we'll be heading back there in a few years. I put the place marker on a busy street outside my old high school. Go Greenwave.

Peace!

i think i added myself and hopefully didn't screw up anyone else. There was a marker for Marlboro, NJ in the middle of the ocean, so i tried to move that one back to NJ. hopefully someone who is more tech savvy can review my work.

Wow...

I was checking out my marker this morning and notice if I switch to satellite view, then zoom all the way down to street level, it switches to a panoramic view of the bar front (where I do open mics at). LOL, I didn't even know you could do that with Google Maps. Someone from the bar must have took pictures of the bar from the outside and made the panoramic view.

Does technology have no bounds?

Do you host the open mic there?

Nah, another guy runs it. He's really cool because he goes around to the surrounding towns and runs open mics at different places. I've played other places besides open mics, but this one started my ukulele career - so it's my favorite. A guy I know recorded some videos of me playing there, but wont give them over for some reason.

I got a nice PA system, so I guess I could run one if needed.

Can someone land me in Santa Rosa, CA, or tell me what I'm doing wrong? I've signed on to Gmail, gone to the map, hit edit, placed my bubble, input the info, saved, refreshed, and it disappears each time, and I've tried it at least a half-dozen times. thanks

I finally figured out why my icon seemingly kept disappearing. There are so many icons on the map, they're divided among three pages -- if you scroll to the bottom of the list you find the buttons to take you between the three pages. But the problem is, it only shows icons on the map for the names on the current page. New names get added to the last page, but then when you re-open the site it brings up the first page, so it looks like your newly added icon is gone. This also means if you're looking for people in a given area it's not enough to just zoom in; that'll only show the people in that area on that particular page. You have to repeat for all the other pages.

The map's a good idea, I think, but this user interface doesn't work very well for our purpose.

A feature I have liked on other forums is that you can get lists of members who have identified themselves as being in a particular country, state/province, or city. But I'm pretty sure that isn't possible in vBulletin.

So perhaps the best option available to us for finding out who describes themselves as being in a given area is regional groups. The groups feature of vBulletin seems underused, maybe because it's hidden away in a drop down menu. It'd be nice if groups were a little more visible.

I'm the first one in Phoenix?

Nope, if you look on page 2 there's Phanzo from Phoenix. That's one drawback to this map, you can only see one page of markers at a time. Currently there are 3 pages. (Scroll to the bottom on the left to find links to other pages.)

Hey Seeso

I screwed up and entered my city on the map three times.
How do I delete two of them. When I entered them they didn't show on the map so I tried again and again.
Now I want to repair my screw up.
