She's playing what looks like a Kala sunburst with f-holes here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Na1IqvjdnfQ&feature=sub)

Looks like she may have UAS! :D

She mentioned to me that the Bushman's pickup didn't work when she played with Ben Folds, so she had to play into a mic and it was hard for people to hear it that way. It looks like she picked up a uke with a more reliable pickup for live shows!

Hmm. I liked the sound of the Kala in this video. Maybe she'll stick with it. A long time ago, Bushman said they were putting out a Nunes signature model, but I never heard about it ever again..

I guess the F-holes are nice, especially for big crowds, but if I were her, I'd be playing with my Bushman in front of the webcam night and day.

(sorry, I couldn't)

I'm with you Deach

I'll just say this: as she makes more money and gains popularity the quality and cost of her ukes will go up until she gets an endorsement deal from a big maker (a Hawaiian K, Compass Rose, Collings, etc.)

In context, that statement says all that needs said.

Just noticed this on Wade Johnston's Bushman contest entry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91mmAbFq--4). It wasn't on there originally - "DON'T BUY A BUSHMAN UKULELE. TRUST ME!"

Deach, you should watch this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91mmAbFq--4).

Wade's a good guy and a UU member.

About the f-hole or Bushman?

lol

Perhaps Deach is tempted to call someone an f-hole?

I was at the show. She said they gave it to her. I don't know what kind of uke it was, I didn't ask her. It sounded pretty good.

The uke she's playing in the vid is a Kala tenor jazz archtop in tobacco burst. I've got one, and it outplayed the solid "koa" Cordoba that my partner had and sold. Nice sounding and easy playing uke.

I've got an all-black Kala archtop...regretting that now because we need more sunburst in the ukulele world. But anyway, unplugged, it's deader than a doornail. The one I have wouldn't know what sustain is, if sustain punched it in a bar brawl.

That's the bad. The good is that it's ment to be used plugged in anyway, so what does it matter? The electronics are good enough for my amps anyway, and you can make it sound like whatever you want.

And it the neck feels great to play on, as comfy as a tenor can be. I just wish it was sunburst. Ah well.

Not a fan of the Kala Jazz ukes at all. I played two unplugged and was not at all impressed with either one. They do look cool though. And even though people have been complaining about Bushman, I've played several that I thought were decent enough.

I think it safe to say that the Kala is intended to be primarily an amplified instrument. IIRC they are laminate topped and most reviews have commented on the low volume when played acoustically. I love the necks on Kala tenor 'ukuleles. I find many others have necks wider than I like and strings too close to the fretboard edge for my taste.

People who have been fortunate enough to own good examples of Bushman 'ukuleles often love them. I see no reason to doubt that a good Bushman can be similar in quality to an Ohana or Mainland.

In a similar vein, Ovation guitars (and the Applause uke?). I can tell you from years of listening (not only playing): that these not-so-hot unplugged options frequently blow away in live gig situations even "finer" instruments that performers paid bucks to install pickups in or already have pickup systems in (ex. Taylor "Expression" system that can sound "processed" at best when live). Why? Minus the more complex overtones these laminates (or not-all solids) cut through. By comparison, a solid mango for example (tenor the most vulnerable IMO) may in certain live situations sound like mushmelon (sonically soggy) by comparison...with a performer's overfocus on the "richness" fooling themselves but not the audience. Uke players would do well to also look at (even buy, lol) Fender Teles which were designed to cut through at lower volumes.

As for Julia Nunes, last time I looked, she can do whatever she wants, just like you and me. Also glad Kala can do whatever it wants and put out another gigworthy product.

Great comment on Kala tenor necks and may I add Kala necks in general.

And buddhuu, if I buy a Kala tenor this year, I'm blaming it on you. Even if it's just one.

That's the great thing about the Kala archtop. It's totally gigworthy. The electronics are great, and it feels great to play, and absolutely looks the business. And it can take a beating. Those are important traits for such an instrument.

As for being quiet and without character unplugged... who cares? Certainly not me. :)

I really like my Bushman tenor. I got it from a reputable store (Guitar Tex) in San Antonio so have had no issues with the distributor or manufacturer. The string spacing is a bit narrow for the neck width, and if the action ever needs to be lowered I'll have to do a neck set, but I really like it. Someday, I can upgrade to a Loprinzi or haircut headstock Collings, but for now I'm set.

That is too funny. I guess he won't be getting a free trip to UWC courtesy of Bushman this year... :(

Check it out. She's listed as a Kala artist on their web site. I wonder what that means. Free ukes, $$$ ....

Obviously as a noob I've missed the past Bushman chat, and it sounds like there's been some bad blood. I have heard about their dreadful customer service, and I've heard of quality issues.

However, I received in trade a Jenny built in 05. I am completely satisfied with it and pleased that it's part of the fleet.

If you do a search on various BBs you will find some info. The best thing to do when buying an instrument is to do your homework and look for others positive recommendations.

This is one of those topics which arises again and again.

I would invite curious new members to search for "bushman" in conjunction with terms like "problems", "issues", "customer service". If the UU site search doesn't seem to perform well, then try Google's advanced search and search within the ukuleleunderground.com domain. A trawl through the results will bring you up to speed.

If someone has new information or thought then by all means post it, but let's not drift back over old ground.
