To bind or not to bind... that is the question

Besides being cosmetic, the binding covers the end grain of the top and bottom, slowing down moisture exchange. If the binding is of harder material, it also protects the corners from dents.

Binding has three purposes. To cover exposed end grain on the top and back and thus minimise the tendency of these pieces to absorb moisture, To provide a hard, long grained piece of wood to protect the edges of the instrument body from damage, and to add aesthetic appeal. At least that is my opinion. Wow, you bea tmy answer by seconds, while I was posting it yours appeared.. At least we agree.
