View Full Version : The No Copyright Claim Cover Campaign

seeso

All of this copyright talk lately got me thinking about a project or campaign we could do to show support for sebi and those in danger of an account suspension like deach.

The project also had to send a message to the copyright nazis that we cover songs for no other reason than because we love music.

I wanted to do something with a rebel/pirate slant, but I don't want to get anyone into trouble. I also wanted a positive response - one with love and support in its foundation.

So with a little help from the Po-Hoes (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?21559-Leader-Board-Ahnko-Honu-Takes-The-Lead-Chapter-2%21), I came up with "The No Copyright Claim Cover Campaign."

The campaign is simple.

Cover an original song by another YouTuber.

The YouTuber doesn't have to be a UU member, but that would be awesome if it was.

Get permission from that YouTuber to cover his or her song.

Give credit to the person you're covering.

Provide a link to that person's channel.

Post a link to your video in this thread.

Extra points if you cover Warner Music Love Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SU0aXjew5rk) or YouTubers Unite! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3Wij9HhyvU) by sebi, or any song by deach (http://www.youtube.com/user/deach69).

A great place to start looking for songs to cover is Grumpy Coyote's "Bring the Song Challenge." Here's a link to those playlists:

Bring the Song CD Challenge! (http://www.youtube.com/user/GrumpyCoyoteTunes#grid/user/E4345F5D3D9DCBA0)

Bring the Song #2 (http://www.youtube.com/user/GrumpyCoyoteTunes#grid/user/850AEDAC36B2D961)

If you have suggestions of channels with original songs, post them here. If you write a lot of original songs, post your channel here.

We have a lot of members who write great original songs.Take a look at:

A small suggestion.
If you want to endear yourself to more people... stop referring to people that you don't agree with as "Nazis".
I believe it hurts the credibility of your effort.
Thanks for your consideration.

Doesn't getting permission from the YouTuber to use his/her song kinda go against the spirit of the protest? I mean if we got permission from the copyright holder YouTube wouldn't have a leg to stand on. But then again I guess this is why you said "rebel/pirate slant without getting into trouble."

I'm just sayin...

I get what you're saying but I think it's main purpose is to really demonstrate that we cover music out of respect/admiration and not for any financial reasons.

Euchre - The same thought ran through my mind.......

I think it would be particularly effective as a protest if the song is covered without permission but with bold due credit to the writer ....and the song writer subsequently contacted the coverer and the rest of the world saying " thank you for appreciating my original work and covering it. I'm glad you got fun from it."........or something similar but more rebeliously incisive!!

In print, that's exactly how it should look. For the purposes of the protest, the obtaining of permission doesn't need to be public, just the thank you. But that doesn't mean we can't give each other the courtesy of the heads-up.

I think the author should definitely be credited - that is only right, but after thinking about Fair Use and copyright law some more today, I think asking permission does go against the strong legal argument that a cover for non-profit comes under the Fair Use laws and is unnecessary, and for the most part impossible (for an amateur) with songs controlled by the likes of WMG. Of course if you want to ask, its a nice gesture. I consider people here on UU my friends, after all.

Oh, now I so have to learn to play Guacamole Ukuleles!!! That song is responsible for getting me into ukes. I discovered it sometime last year, and just kept watching it. I could not get it out of my head, and thought, "What a cool instrument the ukulele is." One thing led to another and here I am 3 ukuleles later. I just have to transpose your key of D baritone chords to G, figure out what to do with a G5 and off I go. Just got permission from Shas to do one of his too, so I will be busy.

Seeso, this is an amazing concept, though I think it will go unnoticed by the Music Industrial Complex. Maybe it should be called "The Ukulele Underground Deaf Ears Project." To be most a effective point-maker though, I think it should be done without the copyright holder's permission. (For the record, my own feeling on this whole thing is that YouTube and the "Industry" have every right to take down songs in violation of copyright laws, as dopey as that is.)

I'm looking forward to the covers. Keeps the creative juices flowing. Seeso rocks!

No kidding. As long as people aren't claiming the songs as their own original works and aren't making any money off it, I don't see what the problem is. It's free advertising - I've actually bought music from the original artist off hearing someone's cover on youtube a few times.

I didn't think I could fall for you any harder than I already have, but you have proved me wrong.

It's better than the original. I love the new verse. Sigh...

This is a wonderful idea. I just ran across it. Copyright law right now is WAY out of hand. It's getting stupid. Companies like Warner Bros. need a reality check.

Although this isn't a video (sorry, YouTube), here is a cover of Zoe Janzen's "The Scorpion Queen and the Centipede King" that I did awhile ago...

The Scorpion Queen (http://robertsonstudio.com/scorpionqueen-01.mp3)

edit: after listening, I have decided to add a totally remixed and remastered version of this song to my new CD "Better Liar" due out in late March.

Some great music here, but I am confused as to the purpose of the protest. Seems to me that contributors are exercising (assuming the authors have granted permission to use the songs) a perfectly legal use of copyrighted music.

Failing to get permission simply exposes the copyright infringer to liability from the song's author. How exactly does this "stick it to the man?"

Did you read the original post?

If nothing else, it demonstrates that there are still some songwriters who care about the music and who do not want heavy-handed killjoys intervening to ruin harmless, non-commercial fun enjoyment of music. These people want their songs shared and performed. They want people to enjoy their music.

Some people realise that a not-for-sale, done-for-fun 'ukulele cover is absolutely no realistic threat to the owners of the publishing, recording or performance rights.

Raise a hand if any YouTube 'ukulele cover has done anything to lessen the chances of you buying original artists/songwriters CDs, songbooks or gig tickets? Seriously, pipe up. These covers are not a threat in any world but the irrational, paranoid fantasy of people who can't see beyond a chequebook.

I have nothing but respect for everyone who enters into the spirit of this subtle and gentle campaign. I have no respect for people who have nothing better to do with their time and money than to trawl through YouTube in the hope of slapping down some poor uke-wielding kid who wants to show off the song she just learned.

I think the point here is perfectly clear. That said, I'm sure music publishers will miss that point entirely, because it is subtle and doesn't have a price tag attached.

Think of it as a project then oldrookie.

Possilby posting wrongly but would really like to put one of my songs forward, I've been thinking lately I'd love to hear a song I wrote on guitar with a ukulele feel to it. So if anyones up to redoing it as a ukulele number I'd be chuffed to hear it... the lyrics are just meant for fun and are not intended to offend so please don't take them as anything else but if you are offended by rugby songs and the like, skip it.

Video and lyrics/chords below:

Ode to a Lesbian Seagull

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqeN5O88MpE
Em7 Cadd9 Unknown Chord
Spread your, leisure
Spread your, Verge of life
Spread it, across my hedge
.... Lesbian Seagull

G6 Cmaj7
You fly, Wind in your hair
You have, No
Dictaphone, Recording your life
.... Lesbian Seagull

Em7 Cadd9 Unknown Chord
Eat out, Carpet tastes good
Long beak, Bet it feels good
To be you, Mmmm yeah
.... Lesbian Seagull

G6 Cmaj7
Taste that, Fish in your mouth
Greasey, Slippery feel

Em7 Cadd9 Em7
No chips, I don't think I can take them no more.
CARRR

(good site for getting ukulele chord shapes - http://www.ezfolk.com/uke/chords/Bb_Major/bb_major.html)

Guitar chords for reference....
Em7 / Cadd9 / Unknown Chord
e 0 / 0 / 0
B 3 / 3 / 5
G 0 / 0 / 0
D 2 / 2 / 4
A 2 / 3 / 5
E 0 / x / x

Chorus
G6 / Cmaj7
e 0 / 0
B 0 / 0
G 0 / 0
D 5 / 10
A 5 / 10
E 3 / 8

It's obviously inspired by Engelbert Humperdinck's Lesbian Seagull but apart from the subject matter bares no relevance to it.... oh apart from a Kar at the end as homage ;)

I like this campaign because all the innocent are harmed by these copyright claims. An idea came to my mind that I'm shooting into the mist. It might be too much work though but what if we did one of those mega collab things where we play one of the anti warner songs! That would be "YouTubers Uniting" for sure!

I also found this neat little list of artists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Warner_Music_Group_artists) who have work produced by WMG. That way, you can check and if they're not on the list cover away!
