One Year Ukulele Underground Membership Anniversary and Birthday Contest
(for those of you who love acronyms: OYUUMAABC)

Contest Video:

Example Song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yIKWujR49s

1) The Prize
The tangible prize is a handmade solid mahogany Brüko concert ukulele with geared tuners and passive pickup (shipped to your doorstep, wherever you are!)

2) Why am I holding this contest?
IMHO Ukulele Underground is one of the best online communities on the web. And I'm really thankful that Deach who I had met on YouTube about a year ago, told me about it. I want to say “Thank you, UU, for being so awesome" and at the same time celebrate my one year UU membership and my 36th birthday with this contest.

3) Schedule
The contest will run from February 1st to April 1st 2010 (GMT) because I joined UU on April 1st 2009. I will announce the winner on April 2nd 2010 which is at the same time my 36th birthday.

4) The Rules
(a)
You must be a member of the Ukulele Underground forum. Write a song that includes the words “Ukulele" and “Underground” somewhere in the lyrics. Your song could tell a story about the Ukulele Underground forum or how you got arrested while playing the ukulele in the London Underground, or a Blues, anything!… Be creative, be funny... be you!!!

(b)
Tape a video of yourself playing and singing your song. You have to sing and play the ukulele at the same time. Apart from this you may add other instruments or video snippets or whatever else comes to your mind. Multitracking is allowed if you record the ukulele and your voice together (not as two separate tracks). Other instruments may be added as separate tracks. Please note however that the song itself will be judged and not your kick-ass technical gear. ;)

(c)
Upload your video on YouTube as a video response to my contest video and post a link to your video in this thread. Add "OYUUMAAB Contest" in the title of your video. You may also name the title of the contest at the start of your video, but you don't have to. ;)

(d)
One entry per person is allowed. You can also enter another entry which then overrides the previous one, etc. The last entry counts.

(e)
If you write a song in another language but English, please include an English translation in the description.

5) Judging Criteria

50% lyrics (Are the lyrics well written? Is the story well told? Is it logical? Is it special?)
30% music (Is it the usual 3-chord-strumming-thang or something special? Nice melody?)
20% performance (A happy attitude, shenanigans, special surroundings or clothes are a plus).

HAVE FUN AND GOOD LUCK!!

And the winner is....

Thank you very much for all the birthday wishes and especially for all your great entries which I have enjoyed very very much! (And I hope you have, too).

I'd like to apologize that I haven't had the time to make a "winner video" yet, but I'll do that as soon as possible. I have spent the afternoon and evening of April 1st to listen to all the great entries again and again and also consulted a friend of mine...

... and I have picked a winner!

The winner is Alex (BornAgainJeeper) with his song "G is for Guano" (check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dW58Z252OXU)

With his song Alex meets (and excels) all criteria I had set for the contest.

1)
50% lyrics (Are the lyrics well written? Is the story well told? Is it logical? Is it special?)

The lyrics are cleverly crafted, contain the words "ukulele" and "underground" and even explain the meaning of the letters G, C, E and A (it now becomes clear to all of us, why the ukulele was especially MADE to be played underground)! Alex's video is the only one that tells a story in the lyrics AND the video, too! It even contains an analogy to the famous fairy tale "Hänsel & Gretel" (I hope your fat friend didn't get sick from eating these bread crumbs from the cave floor). It is very special to my mind due to the fact that the lyrics and the video support each other in telling the story. And I also like the fact that a jeep makes an appearance in the video which makes it authentic, too.

2)
30% music (Is it the usual 3-chord-strumming-thang or something special? Nice melody?)

The song starts with a blast intro, flashing an ukulele solo and gets straight into the groove. I started tapping with my feet right at the beginning of the song. The melody is nice, the chorus catchy. Altogether very well put together!

3)
20% performance (A happy attitude, shenanigans, special surroundings or clothes are a plus).

Happy attitude: Absolutely. You had me rolling on the floor several times when I watched it for the first time and it had the same effect on my friends when I showed it to them.

Shenaningans: I just say "bread crumbs".

Special surroundings: Oh yes! Look at this underground waterfall, the spider and the bat.

Special clothes: Yes! The cave-climbing gear is unusual and great!

4)
Special PLUS
It must have been a lot of work to produce this video. Filming at the location, putting together the sound and then matching the song and the video... Thank you, Alex, for producing such a great song & video!!

Please PM me your address, Alex. I'll ship my uke to you on Tuesday (Monday is a bank holiday here because of the Easter thing.)

Beautiful uke, everything I want. I'm in!

Edit: One question. Does the video of us playing and singing (in one track) have to be the same take as our audio? I often do many, many takes; so it's hard to make my videos without overdub.

Nice idea, great initiative, as we say in France Chapeau ( Hat off)
I don't know if I will take part, I'm on this forum and play only for one year, I'm a newbie but I will perhaps try ;-)
Thanks for your contest.

I have wanted to write a song about this lovely place and our jams for quite some time and since I recently discovered cracks in my uke, I guess this is just the thing to get my booty in gear!

What I meant was that you should play and sing the song in a single take. As if you were presenting it live. :) Hmm, I never thought about overdubbing of the audio, since I never do it. I wonder how you get video and audio in synch when you do this?

Great concept. I haven't done any vid's yet but might make this my debut. Will also be my virgin songwriting although I always make up stuff for the kids.

sounds fun... ill see what i can write and maybe make an entry...and my uke just pulled a strap button so who know... i might feel inspired enough to win a new one... OFF TO WRITEING

Thanks for putting on the contest. I'll put on my creative thinking cap and try to come up with a winner. Good luck everyone!
