whats the difference between curly koa and regular koa, or is it the same thing by a more formal name

curly koa is a different cut of the wood showing more figure . . . they both sound pretty much the same, the difference primarily being asthetic

ok cool, the lanikai CK-C i am probably going to get is curly koa, and i never heard of it so i thought id ask. i cant figure out if its solid or laminate though.

definately laminated. Solid wood koa ukuleles cost 400+.

The Lanikai CKC is laminate wood.I have one ,it was my first ukulele.I bought it at the ukulele house in waikiki 3 1/2 years ago.It's a great well made ukulele.It is great for strumming .It comes with GHS strings and I still have the originals. Just my 2 cents worth. Hope it helps

the one you listed is laminated, their koa solid from their 'handmade' series is a LK-1C (concert) -- while they don't call them curly koa, the figure is really nice -- i think their handmade series is actually made by Kanilea, an awesome brand, can somebody confirm this??

You oughtta restring that sucker with some better strings... the difference is *insane*...
I was about to get rid of my Mitchell concert until I restrung it with Worth strings. It's still a bit quiet and timid sounding, but I'm keepin' it.

Yea, those Lanikai's were built by Kanilea...honestly, if I was going to go that route, I'd just get a Kanilea though

just ordered it from musicians friend, but now that i think about it, i shouldve gotten something more expensive, solid koa.

If you really wanted a koa `ukulele, I'm sure you could always return the one that's coming. On the mainland (or anywhere), its common to see marketing at play all over the place. If you stick with, dare I say, better branded instruments, curly could take on a new meaning.

Most curly `ukulele sets I've seen for sale range from $75 (back and sides) to over $200 (top, back and sides).

I've got one. I like it a lot.
Kanile'a also didn't make too many of them either. Pretty much the same thing as the K-1 except that they didn't start to switch over to the Tru bracing system until towards the end of the Lanikai run. So not all of the LK-1's have that. Everything else is the same.
I picked it up because it meant that I got the Kanile'a instrument I really wanted and saved a couple hundred very precious dollars just by having Lanikai's name on the headstock. That was just too hard to pass up.

so which one did u get? i have the ckteq and lsm-t. the lsm they show on the site is mohagany, but mine is laminated koa. an the ck looks to be mohagany.
hmm, wierd. i've neva liked the sound of the ck, tho the lsm does have an ok voice, i def want a new uke thats not lanikai
